Before paying for a used PS5, test the actual console—including its network access and, if applicable, its disc drive—and confirm its exact model and serial number. Before buying a used game disc, inspect it and, when possible, test that specific disc in the console you plan to use. A short test cannot guarantee future reliability, but these checks can expose compatibility problems, damage, or service restrictions before the sale.
What to check before meeting the seller
- Review the seller’s ratings, feedback, return terms, and the listing’s description of the exact PS5 model and included items.
- Ask for an unedited video showing the console powering on, displaying an image, connecting to the internet, operating its buttons and ports, and reading a disc if it has a drive. PlayStation recommends these checks, followed by an in-person inspection for issues video may miss (PlayStation’s US buying guide).
- Ask the seller to sign out and deactivate the console before handoff, and to demonstrate access to PlayStation services. A console reported lost or stolen may be permanently suspended from those services.
- Confirm what is included: controller, cables, stand, and any games. Factor the cost of replacing missing or faulty items into the total price.
How to inspect and test the console in person
Check the model, serial number, and physical condition
- Confirm whether the console has a disc drive; do not rely on the listing title alone.
- Check that the serial number is present and legible. PlayStation lists an altered, defaced, or removed serial number among exclusions in its US/Canada warranty terms.
- Look over the casing and seals for damage or signs of opening or repair. An intact seal is not proof that the console is healthy.
Test the basic functions
- Power on the console and confirm it produces a stable picture through HDMI and operates normally.
- Test the controller’s buttons and sticks, the console’s buttons, and its USB ports.
- Connect to Wi-Fi or the available network, then confirm the console can access PlayStation services. A suspension can block service access on the device, including Store content and games or modes that require online access. Some disc games that do not require PlayStation services may still run under Sony’s US terms (US Terms of Service).
- If the console has a drive, insert the game disc you are considering. If possible, try another known-good game as well. A successful read of one disc is not a complete hardware guarantee.
Listen for unusual noise and watch for overheating or unexpected shutdowns, but do not treat a brief test as a diagnosis of the console’s internal condition. PlayStation recommends an in-person inspection in addition to video checks (buying guide).

Have the seller remove their console association
Ask the seller to sign out and deactivate the device before you leave. PlayStation’s instructions for disabling Console Sharing and Offline Play are under Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play. See PlayStation’s Account & Security support. Do not assume that access to the seller’s account or digital downloads will transfer with the console.
How to check a used PS5 game disc
Inspect the disc and test it in the intended console
- Under good light, inspect both sides for cracks, deep scratches, labels, or grime.
- When possible, test the exact disc in the console you plan to use. If it fails and the console has a drive, try another known-good game or supported video disc to help distinguish a disc problem from a drive problem.
- For light dirt, PlayStation recommends cleaning with a soft, clean cloth. Cleaning will not establish that a deep scratch, crack, or drive fault has been fixed.
PlayStation’s disc troubleshooting guidance says PS5 consoles cannot play burned discs or audio CDs and recommends trying another game, Blu-ray disc, or DVD when troubleshooting a read problem (disc troubleshooting).

Check the game’s edition and access requirements
Confirm the exact game edition, language or region needs, included content, and any online or account requirements on that game’s own listing or support page. Requirements are not universal, so check the specific title rather than assuming a rule applies to every game.
A used disc does not transfer the seller’s account or digital entitlement. PlayStation describes Store purchases as personal licenses in its US Terms of Service; do not pay extra for an account or a promise of access to the seller’s downloads.
Make sure the disc and console are compatible
A disc is useful only if the console can read it. A PS5 Digital Edition cannot use PS4 game discs. Some eligible PS4 disc upgrades also require a disc-drive PS5, and the original disc must remain inserted to play the upgraded digital game. Check the specific console model and the game’s eligibility in PlayStation Games Support rather than assuming every upgrade is available.

Understand warranty and return risks
PlayStation’s US buying guide says third-party used products may not be covered by warranty, while certified refurbished products are treated differently. The published PS5 limited hardware warranty for the US and Canada covers the original purchaser for one year from the original purchase date and requires a dated bill of sale or retailer receipt for service. Do not assume remaining manufacturer coverage transfers to a secondhand buyer; ask for the receipt and check the terms that apply where you live. The US/Canada warranty also lists an altered or removed serial number among exclusions (PS5 warranty).
For physical software media, Sony’s US limited warranty states 90 days of coverage from the original purchase date for the original purchaser. The policy does not establish whether that coverage transfers to a secondhand buyer, and it should not be generalized to other countries (Physical Media Warranty (US)). Check local terms and the seller’s return policy before paying.
Compare used PS5 listings on the details that affect your risk
| What to compare | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Model and drive | Exact PS5 model, whether it has a disc drive, and compatibility with the games you want. |
| Demonstrated function | Power, display, network and service access, controller, ports, and disc reading where applicable. |
| Condition and identity | Visible damage, serial number legibility, and any signs of opening or repair. |
| Included items | Controller, cables, stand, and games; account for replacements in the total cost. |
| Proof and recourse | Receipt or proof of purchase, seller return terms, and any warranty coverage the seller can document. |
There is no single check that guarantees a used console or disc will remain reliable. Prefer a listing whose seller permits a real test, provides clear return terms, and identifies exactly what is included.
