Identify the exact system and what comes with it
Read the make and full model number from the main unit rather than relying on the listing title. Micro systems vary: one may have a CD player and AM/FM tuner, another a USB input or an older dock. Confirm which speakers, remote, power cables, and other accessories are included. Missing items can affect whether you can use the system as intended; do not assume a pictured accessory is part of the sale.
Inspect the cabinet, controls and connectors
Check the main unit and speaker enclosures for cracks, dents, loose parts, corrosion or other visible damage. Look closely at the controls and connectors, and ask for clear close-up photographs if you cannot inspect the system in person. Significant cabinet damage can be more difficult and costly to address than a replaceable speaker-driver fault.

Check both speakers carefully
Inspect the visible drivers for tears, dents or other damage, and examine older speakers for deteriorating foam surrounds. Test both speakers and listen to each channel for distortion, rattles or missing output. Foam surrounds can wear with age, and cones or tweeters can be damaged; a system that powers on is not proof that both speakers work properly.
If a driver appears faulty, note its model and check whether compatible replacement parts are available before treating repair as a practical fallback. Compatibility is model-specific; a generic speaker part may not fit or work correctly.

Test the functions you actually need
When possible, audition the system in person. Test the sources you expect to use, both speaker channels, and the controls. Operate the amplifier controls and listen for unexpected noises. A quick test should establish whether the unit and required functions work; sound in the seller’s room with their associated equipment does not establish how it will sound in your own room.
If you cannot test it, ask the seller which sources, controls and channels have been checked, and request a clear description of any known faults. Treat “works” in a listing as a claim to verify, not a substitute for testing.

Check repairability before relying on a fix
Use the full model number to ask the manufacturer or a specialist repairer whether the system can still be serviced and whether important parts are available. As What Hi-Fi? advises about buying older audio equipment, buyers should check that crucial parts are available and serviceable. Older equipment can need costly work, so get a model-specific view before buying if you would only accept the system on the assumption that it can be repaired.
Ask about history, returns and shipping
Ask the seller about the system’s condition, history and reason for selling. If a dealer is selling it, confirm the warranty and return period that apply to this particular item rather than assuming standard terms. A private sale may not offer the same protections.

For a shipped system, ask whether the original packaging is available or how the seller will protect the main unit and speakers. Poor packaging can expose delicate components to damage in transit.
Compare candidates and judge the price locally
There is no established universal used price for micro hi-fi systems. Asking prices depend on the exact model, condition, demand, included components, service history and local market. Compare current examples of the same model in similar condition in your area; do not use a different system or a headline price as a direct benchmark.
