Persona 4 Revival is ATLUS’s announced remake of Persona 4 Golden, not a newly numbered sequel. Its story returns to the rural Japanese town of Inaba, where a high-school student and classmates investigate disappearances and murders tied to the Midnight Channel—a rumor about seeing a fated person on a switched-off television. The investigation leads to a world inside television screens, where the group confronts Shadows and awakens Personas.
What is Persona 4 Revival?
ATLUS describes Persona 4 Revival as a remake and retelling of Persona 4 Golden, part of the Persona role-playing game series. SEGA says the remake reimagines the graphics, interface, combat, and cutscenes for a modern presentation. The announced material does not specify whether particular story or character arcs have changed, so it is safer to understand Revival as a modernized return to the Persona 4 story than to assume either a scene-for-scene reproduction or a new plot.

Why do Shadows and Personas matter?
SEGA describes a Shadow as a manifestation of a side of a person that they have avoided or denied. Facing that side allows the Shadow to awaken as the person’s Persona, a power used to fight in the other world. That connection ties the supernatural battles to the series’ recurring interest in identity and self-understanding; it is also a central part of this story’s premise.
Who is involved?
The protagonist is described as a second-year high-school student who comes from the city to live with an uncle in the countryside. The announced classmates include Yosuke Hanamura, Chie Satonaka, and Yukiko Amagi; SEGA’s overview also lists Marie. The group investigates together, and the official materials frame them as the Special Investigation Team. The published overview does not lay out the remake’s complete character arcs. Where does Persona 4 Revival take place?
The story is set in Inaba, a fictional rural town in Japan. Xbox Wire describes a community surrounded by hills, farmland, and rivers, with few tourist attractions or entertainment venues. Locations named in the official materials include the Central Shopping District, Junes department store, Samegawa Flood Plain, Shichiri Beach, and the Amagi Inn. (Xbox Wire’s Inaba tour guide; SEGA’s overview)
Inaba’s everyday character is part of the contrast at the heart of the premise: school routines, work, clubs, local relationships, and town gossip unfold alongside a supernatural investigation. The story places an extraordinary threat inside a close-knit community whose ordinary places become familiar backdrops to the case.
How is the game described to play?
SEGA presents the gameplay as two connected activities: spend time as a student in Inaba, then explore the other world with the Special Investigation Team.
