Before paying for a used iPhone, verify the seller’s return terms, inspect and test the device, review its battery and parts history, and confirm it is not carrier-locked. Most importantly, do not take ownership while Activation Lock or the previous owner’s Apple Account is still attached. Apple’s pre-owned iPhone buying guide and Activation Lock guidance provide the key checks below.
1. Check the seller and return terms
For an online purchase, read the return policy before ordering. Check how long the return window lasts, which reasons qualify, and how to make a return. If a seller describes a phone as certified or refurbished, ask what that process includes and which checks were performed; there is no universal certification standard established by Apple’s guidance.

Ask for details about the phone’s physical condition, battery health, and repairs. When it arrives, inspect it promptly and return it if it does not match the listing or the seller’s description.

Turn on or wake the iPhone. If it displays “iPhone Locked to Owner,” the seller must enter their credentials and remove the lock. Apple Support is explicit: “Don’t buy an iPhone if Activation Lock is enabled.” Activation Lock is associated with Find My; the Apple Account password is required to turn off Find My, erase, reactivate, or use a protected device.

A passcode Lock Screen or Home Screen is not proof the phone is ready for a new owner. Ask the seller to erase it, then begin setup. If setup requests the previous owner’s Apple Account information, the phone is still linked to that account. Do not take ownership until the seller removes it. Apple says, “A device is ready for you to use when you see the Hello screen.”
3. Inspect the exterior and test basic functions
Check the hardware
Remove the case and accessories so they do not hide damage. Inspect the screen, sides, and back for scratches, scuffs, dents, or other damage. Check the charging connector fitted to that model for debris or damage; serious physical damage can affect functionality.

Try to turn the phone on. If it does not start, try charging it with a cable that fits that specific model. Apple advises not to buy the phone if its battery will not charge.
Test the phone while it is set up and unlocked
If the seller has not erased the phone, ask them to erase it so you can test it. Check the following:

- Press the volume and side buttons; test the Ring/Silent switch on models that have one.
- Adjust screen brightness.
- Take photos in bright and low light, check focus, and test the Telephoto and Ultra Wide cameras if the model includes them. Record and play back a video.
- Play a ringtone to check the speakers. Record and play back a short Voice Memo to check the microphone.
- Connect to Wi-Fi if available. If you decide not to buy or return the phone, forget any Wi-Fi network you joined during inspection.
4. Review battery health—and understand what it cannot tell you
Open Settings > Battery > Battery Health. On iOS 16.1 or later, the path is Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging. Apple’s buyer guidance says battery-health information is available on iPhone 6 and later running iOS 11.3 or later. Review Maximum Capacity and any service or degradation messages.
Apple does not set a universal battery-health percentage at which every used iPhone should be rejected. Battery-health information is not available for unknown or non-genuine batteries, so a missing or unreliable reading is not proof the battery is healthy. Ask about battery repairs and factor the possibility of replacement into your decision.

5. Read Parts and Service History in context
On iOS 15.2 or later, open Settings > General > About and look for Parts and Service History. What appears depends on the model and repair history; it is not a complete record of every repair. Apple’s Parts and Service History guidance says that when a part has been serviced more than once, only the most recent service appears.
Apple lists the following supported part details by model group. These are the parts the history may cover—not a guarantee that every repair or part will appear on every device.

Apple says that on earlier iOS versions, only a replacement part identified as Unknown can be checked. Interpret any visible label rather than treating all repairs as equivalent:
- Genuine: The repair used genuine Apple parts and processes.
- Used: The part had already been used or installed in another iPhone.
- Unknown: The part may be nongenuine, may not be functioning as expected, or may not be verifiable.
- Unverified: This can indicate a logic board used in another iPhone; Apple says it might affect features such as Apple Pay.
- Finish Repair: Calibration is incomplete. Apple says features such as Face ID or Touch ID may not work until calibration is finished.
6. Check the carrier restriction
Open Settings > General > About and look for Network Provider Lock or Carrier Lock; the wording varies by region and software. Apple says “No SIM restrictions” indicates the iPhone is unlocked. If a carrier or network provider is listed, the phone can be used only with that provider. Verify compatibility with the network you intend to use before paying.
7. Compare listings using the checks that matter
There is no universal used-iPhone grading scheme or minimum battery-health percentage established in Apple’s cited guidance. Compare listings on concrete, verifiable points instead:
