Before paying for a used foldable, inspect its inner screen, factory screen protector, hinge and outer screen separately, then verify activation status, battery condition, repair history and return terms. A cosmetic grade alone cannot tell you whether its flexible display or hinge is in good shape.
1. Confirm the exact model and its history
Ask for the make, model number, generation, storage capacity, region variant and carrier status. Foldables differ by model, and care guidance or water-resistance claims for one generation should not be assumed to apply to another.

Ask whether the phone has been repaired, exposed to liquid, or had its inner display, cover display or hinge serviced. Request the IMEI or ESN and check activation and carrier-lock status through the seller’s marketplace or the relevant carrier. Marketplace procedures and protections differ; a check on one platform is not a universal guarantee. Swappa outlines these checks in its used Galaxy Z Fold/Flip buying guide.

2. Inspect the inner display and its protector
Open the phone and examine the flexible screen against a plain, light background at more than one brightness setting. Look for lines, dark patches, dead pixels, dents, unusual crease damage, peeling or separation, and areas where touch does not respond. Test the full screen, including the crease and edges.

Inspect the pre-installed protector at the fold for bubbles, lifting or damage. Do not peel it off to investigate or apply another film without model-specific manufacturer guidance. Samsung says it does not recommend or authorize user removal of the protector and directs owners to an authorized service center for replacement (Samsung foldable care guidance). For Pixel Fold, Google says not to remove the pre-installed protector or apply a third-party one (Pixel Fold safety and regulatory guide). Treat protector damage as a question for the seller or an authorized service provider, not as a reason to pull it up during inspection.
3. Test the hinge and how the phone closes
Open and close the device smoothly a few times, without forcing it. Listen and feel for grinding, grit, uneven resistance or unusual looseness. Check that it opens and closes as designed, and look for an abnormal gap when shut.

Do not insert tools or try to clear the hinge yourself. Google warns that fine particles such as sand or dirt can damage a foldable display or hinge. Its guidance is specific to Pixel Fold; the general inspection lesson is to check for debris and avoid forcing or probing the mechanism.
4. Check the outer screen and ordinary phone functions
Inspect the cover screen for cracks, scratches and touch dead spots, then test its response. Test the phone both open and closed so you can confirm each screen behaves normally in the way the model is designed to work.

Check the usual used-phone basics as well:
- Cameras: Open each camera mode or lens available and check that the view is clear and controls respond.
- Audio and controls: Test speakers, microphones, buttons and biometrics.
- Connections and charging: Check wireless functions where practical, and confirm the charging port works.
- Battery and activation: Observe battery behavior during the inspection, and confirm the phone can be activated and is not locked to an account or carrier in a way that prevents your use.
A short inspection cannot establish long-term battery health. Ask for the seller’s documented battery condition or replacement history rather than treating an unsupported percentage as a universal standard.
5. Get the condition, warranty and return terms in writing
Ask the seller to state in writing what the cosmetic grade covers and whether the phone has had screen or hinge repairs, battery replacement, or liquid exposure. Also confirm any remaining manufacturer warranty, the seller’s warranty, the return window and what remedy applies if a fault appears after purchase. Keep the listing and written answers.

“Refurbished” does not necessarily mean the battery is new, and cosmetic grading is not a universal technical standard. The Associated Press notes that refurbished phones do not always receive new batteries and that grading practices vary (AP secondhand-phone buying advice). Government consumer guidance on second-hand goods is available from GOV.UK; your rights depend on where you buy and the seller type.

6. Treat water and dust resistance as model- and condition-specific
Do not assume a phone remains protected because it originally had a water-resistance rating. Age, damage, repair or disassembly can reduce or eliminate that protection, and different models have different ratings. For example, Google says Pixel Fold is not dust resistant and that its water resistance may diminish or be lost through normal wear and tear, repair, disassembly or damage. Those Pixel Fold statements should not be generalized to other brands or generations.
7. Compare the whole offer, not just the asking price
Compare candidates using the exact model and its software-support runway, the condition of both screens and the hinge, documented battery and repair history, seller reputation, written warranty and return window, and total cost after likely repairs. A lower price may be poor value if a damaged protector, display or hinge leaves you facing uncertain service costs.
A manufacturer-renewed offer can be worth comparing when its included parts and warranty are documented, but availability is regional. Samsung announced on April 28, 2026 that its UK Certified Re-Newed program includes Galaxy Z Fold7 and Z Flip7, certified new batteries, more than 100 quality tests and a two-year manufacturer warranty. These terms describe that UK program, not every used Samsung phone or a global offer (Samsung Newsroom UK announcement).
