Before buying a used Android TV box, verify that the exact device is Play Protect certified, check its software and update status, confirm that it runs the streaming apps and video quality you need, and test the hardware in person. A box that merely says “Android” or has the Play Store installed may not be an officially certified Android TV device.
1. Confirm Play Protect certification
On the box, open the Google Play Store and go to profile icon > Settings > About. Look for the Play Protect certification status. Google says certified devices have passed Android compatibility testing; for an uncertified device, Google has no record of those test results. That can mean limitations with updates, apps, or security. Google’s certification guidance explains how to check.

Certification is not the same as having the Play Protect app-scanning feature enabled. Scanning checks apps from Google Play and other sources and may warn about, disable, or remove harmful apps. Keep it enabled, but do not treat it as a substitute for device certification. Google’s Play Protect help page describes the scanning feature.

The words “Android” and “Android TV,” or a preinstalled Play Store, do not prove that a box is an officially certified Android TV product. Google has warned that some boxes built with Android Open Source Project software are marketed to look like Android TV devices and may include Google apps or the Play Store without a Google licence. A Google employee stated in an Android TV Community post on May 26, 2023, that some such devices may include unlicensed Google apps and are not Play Protect certified. Check the exact model against Google’s Android TV partner information, then confirm the certification status on the box itself. Do not rely solely on the seller’s listing, packaging, or screenshots from a different unit.
3. Check updates and the firmware state
Ask the seller to show the installed system version and whether the box offers a system update. Google recommends checking for and installing Android updates. Then look up the exact model on its manufacturer’s support pages to see whether support and updates are still available; commitments vary by model and market.

An unlocked bootloader, modified Android system, or rooted device can cause certification to fail. Google’s suggested recovery steps include updating Android, factory resetting, and restoring the original manufacturer-signed software when needed. A factory reset alone does not prove modified firmware has been restored. If certification fails or the seller will not show its status, treat that as a reason to walk away or contact the manufacturer—not as an invitation to install unofficial firmware. 4. Verify the streaming services and quality you need
Do not assume that a service will work just because it has an Android TV app or the box can install that app. Google Widevine is a content-protection system used for premium media, and Android TV is a supported platform, but platform support alone does not establish that a particular used box has the required DRM provisioning, app compatibility, or playback resolution.

Check the exact model with each streaming service you use, for your region, and test playback on the actual unit if possible. Confirm the resolution you care about rather than relying on a generic “4K” claim. Google’s Widevine overview explains the DRM system; it does not certify the capabilities of an individual used box.
5. Test the unit and accessories
If you can meet the seller, inspect and test the box before paying. These checks are practical buyer precautions, not a Google-prescribed hardware test protocol.

- Inspect the casing and ports for visible damage, looseness, or signs of overheating.
- Confirm that the remote and power supply are included and work.
- Connect the box to a display and check HDMI picture and sound.
- Test the remote’s main buttons, network connection, and the apps you intend to use.
- Check that the seller is demonstrating the same unit and exact model being sold.
6. Compare the complete deal, not just the asking price
For each listing, compare the exact model, certification status, remaining manufacturer support, app availability and video quality in your region, physical condition, included accessories, and total price. Compare that total with a currently supported, certified Android TV streaming box. There is no universal support lifespan or fair used price: verify both for the particular model and local market.

Google’s certification page says Android devices go through more than 100,000 compatibility tests and hundreds of security and permissions tests; the page does not state a publication year for those figures. Google’s Android certification page explains what certification represents, but certification does not guarantee that a used device remains supported or offers the services and quality you want.
