Plan a connected road framework first, give each road a clear job, and use traffic information to find bottlenecks before you rebuild. The exact tools and traffic behavior differ between the original Cities: Skylines and Cities: Skylines II, so check which edition you are playing before following edition-specific advice.
Start with connections, not a perfect-looking grid
A useful layout connects the places people need to reach while leaving room to extend the network as the city grows. In the original Cities: Skylines, the manual’s opening instructions connect a new road to the highway, and roads also support zoning. That makes connectivity an early requirement, not a finishing detail. Read the original game’s road and zoning guidance.

In Cities: Skylines II, the road-building tools documented by Paradox include grid mode, snapping, road guides, and road angles. Use them to shape blocks and maintain alignments where those tools suit the district; they are ways to draw a network, not a reason to make every district a uniform grid. Paradox’s Road Tools feature diary describes these features. The diary was published in 2023, so check your installed version for current availability.

Give each road a distinct role
A practical planning heuristic is to separate local access from through-movement. Local streets serve nearby buildings; larger connecting roads carry movement between nearby areas; highway links provide wider city access. This hierarchy can help keep traffic headed elsewhere from cutting through a district, but it is design guidance—not a guarantee about how the game will route vehicles.

- Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
- Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
- Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
- Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
- Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only
- Local streets: connect homes, shops, and services to the surrounding network.
- Connecting roads: link districts and gather traffic from local streets.
- Highway links: connect the city to wider routes; plan for them to serve more than one district where the map and layout allow.
When comparing layouts, consider what each road is meant to do, how districts connect to one another and to highway routes, and where intersections concentrate turning traffic. In Cities: Skylines II, traffic-flow and traffic-volume views add evidence about how those choices are working. None of these checks guarantees a particular traffic score. A community guide discusses the road-hierarchy approach as a way to limit unwanted cut-through traffic. See the community road hierarchy guide.
Diagnose congestion before widening roads
In Cities: Skylines II, use the traffic and road infoviews to inspect traffic flow, traffic volume, congestion, and road condition. First look for where vehicles accumulate; then check which routes carry high volumes and whether a junction or road segment is the pinch point. That gives you a more specific problem to solve than “the roads are too small.”

Paradox says road condition can affect vehicle speed and accident probability. If a poor-condition segment is part of the problem, adding capacity alone may not address it. The same feature diary explains that sequel vehicles can use more lanes and adapt around blocked lanes; these are details documented for Cities: Skylines II, not a promise about the original game or every update. Paradox’s Traffic AI feature diary describes the traffic and road infoviews and these behaviors.

Transit and pedestrian connections are worth considering when a district has many trips that do not need to be made by car. Treat them as part of the network: a useful alternative needs to connect places people want to reach, rather than simply exist on the map. The exact modes available and their effects depend on the edition and its installed content; the sources cited here do not establish a current, detailed comparison of modes or quantify how much traffic any one option removes. Use road-management mods only in the original game, and verify compatibility
Traffic Manager: President Edition (TM:PE) is an optional mod for the original Cities: Skylines, not a built-in feature. Its documentation describes city-wide transport and road policies, with many options customizable for individual lanes, junctions, or roads. The cited documentation is marked verified for TM:PE version 11.6.5.1 in March 2022; that does not establish compatibility with the version you have now. Check the mod’s current documentation and compatibility information before relying on it. TM:PE documentation.

The original game and its sequel do not share every road tool or traffic mechanic. Paradox’s cited Traffic AI and Road Tools feature diaries date to 2023; its Detailer’s Patch #2 announcement describes additional roads and a Traffic Routes feature. Those announcements establish what Paradox documented at the time, not whether a feature is available in every current installation.
