If you’re considering a Steam Machine because you want customizable backlighting, check Valve’s current lighting guidance before buying: its documented light bar displays system status and cannot be directly controlled by games or other apps with RGB functionality. That means the published feature does not promise selectable colors, animations, or app-based lighting effects. The checks below cover lighting first, then display fit, connections, expansion, and purchase terms.
Can you customize the Steam Machine light bar?
Valve describes two separate lights: a light bar running along the bottom of the machine and an indicator LED beside the power button. The support guide says the light bar is currently set up to display system status and “cannot be directly utilized by games or other apps with RGB functionality.” Read Valve’s Steam Machine feature and troubleshooting guide for the current documented behavior.

So, if your must-have is an ambient status cue, the light bar may meet that need. If you expect to choose colors, build effects, or synchronize lighting with third-party RGB apps, Valve’s published guidance does not establish that capability. Check the live support guide again near purchase in case the software behavior changes.

Valve sets 1080p as Steam Machine’s default game resolution and uses 1080p for Steam Machine Verified testing. The guide says users can change resolution globally or for an individual game; 1080p is a default, not a universal game lock. Actual results depend on game settings, and the reviewed official guidance does not promise a universal frame rate.

Before buying, consider the resolution and refresh rate you want in the specific games you play, then consult current device and game guidance. Valve describes the machine as “roughly 6 times more powerful than Steam Deck,” but that is a vendor-level product comparison—not an independently measured result for every game or resolution. Valve’s Steamworks documentation gives the product context.
Do your TV or monitor and cable path work?
Valve lists HDMI 2.0 and DisplayPort 1.4. Gaming Mode currently supports one display at a time and defaults to HDMI when HDMI is connected; DisplayPort can be the sole video output. If connecting DisplayPort to an HDMI display, Valve requires an active adapter or cable—passive adapters are unsupported. Check Valve’s connection guidance and confirm the inputs on your display, plus any receiver, dock, or adapter in the signal path.

Are the ports and storage expansion enough?
Valve lists front USB-A 3.2 Gen 1 ports and rear USB-A 2.0 ports. Plan where you’ll connect items such as a controller receiver, keyboard, or external storage, especially if some devices need faster ports or convenient front access.
The machine supports microSD cards rated UHS-I class 3 or better. UHS-II and UHS-III cards may work, but their higher transfer speeds are not supported by the machine. If you plan to expand storage by microSD, check both the card’s capacity and whether its supported speed matches your use. Valve’s support guide lists the port and microSD details.

- Games and display: What resolution and performance can you expect in the games you actually play?
