What to Check Before Buying a Samsung Galaxy SmartTag3 for Android

SmartTag3 is specified for Galaxy devices on Android 12 or later, but non-Galaxy Android support is unconfirmed. Check phone features, range conditions, upkeep, and regional availability before buying.

Before buying a Samsung Galaxy SmartTag3, check whether your exact phone is a supported Galaxy device. Samsung’s Canadian specifications list Galaxy phones and tablets running Android 12 or later and require the SmartThings app. Samsung’s official information reviewed here does not confirm setup or feature support for non-Galaxy Android phones, so owners of other Android devices should verify their exact model with Samsung before purchasing.

Will Samsung SmartTag3 work with my Android phone?

“Android” alone is not enough to establish compatibility. Samsung Canada lists Galaxy phones and tablets running Android 12 or later and says the SmartThings app is required. Check your phone’s model and Android version, and confirm that you can use SmartThings.

Samsung’s official SmartTag3 information does not clearly establish whether a non-Samsung Android phone can set up the tag or which features it can use. If you have a Google Pixel or another non-Galaxy Android phone, do not assume that Android support means SmartTag3 support; ask Samsung about your exact model before buying. Samsung Canada’s SmartTag3 specifications name Galaxy devices.

Does Galaxy SmartTag3 work with non-Samsung phones?

That remains unconfirmed in the official SmartTag3 material cited here. Samsung’s page specifies Galaxy devices, not Android phones generally. Older SmartTag product guidance is not a reliable substitute for a SmartTag3-specific compatibility policy.

Samsung SmartTag2 (2023) Bluetooth + UWB, IP67 Water and Dust Resistant, Findable via App, 1.5 Year Battery Life (4-Pack) - Black/White (Global Edition, No US Warranty)
  • Find your things with ease: The SmartThings Find app uses Bluetooth and ultra-wideband (UWB) technology to locate and keep track of your stuff
  • Water and Dust Resistant: IP67 rating offers protection against dust and water immersion between 15 cm and 1 meter for up to 30 minutes
  • Compatible with Galaxy Devices Only

Ask Samsung to confirm three points for your exact phone: whether SmartThings can set up and manage the tag, which finding features work, and whether any required Android version or Samsung account applies. Do not treat support for iOS or another platform as evidence that an Android phone has the same feature set.

What phone do I need for SmartTag3 Compass View?

Basic tracker compatibility and directional finding are separate questions. Samsung says Compass View requires a compatible Galaxy phone running Android 12 or later with UWB or Bluetooth Channel Sounding support. Channel Sounding is listed for the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, Z Fold8, S26 Ultra, and S26 Plus, with additional devices potentially supported later. Availability may vary by device and region. Check Samsung’s current device-specific requirements before paying for a phone or tag on the assumption that Compass View will work.

Samsung SmartTag2 (2023) Bluetooth + UWB, IP67 Water and Dust Resistant, Findable via App, 1.5 Year Battery Life - Black (International Version)
  • Compatible with Galaxy Devices Only.

Samsung lists maximum figures of up to 120 m for Bluetooth LE, 60 m for Bluetooth Channel Sounding, and 20 m for UWB in its Canadian specifications. The 60 m Channel Sounding figure is for line-of-sight conditions; walls, electronics, and other obstacles can reduce range and accuracy. These are not guaranteed everyday distances, and a published maximum does not mean every phone can use that finding method.

How will SmartTag3 find an item that is out of Bluetooth range?

Remote location depends on Samsung’s finding network, not just the tag and your phone. Samsung says more than 900 million participating Galaxy devices worldwide can act as finding nodes. That is Samsung’s stated network size, not a guarantee that a lost tag will be detected promptly in every place: a participating device must come within range for a location update. Samsung’s announcement describes the network; actual coverage where you use the tag can differ.

Before choosing a tracker, consider whether the people and places around your belongings are likely to include participating devices. A large global network figure does not tell you how dense coverage is on a quiet trail, in a sparsely populated area, or inside a particular building.

What SmartTag3 features matter for your use?

Samsung describes Bluetooth LE 6, UWB, Bluetooth Channel Sounding, Compass View, a buzzer, location history, movement alerts, Place Notification, NFC-powered Lost Mode, SmartThings routines, and a Left Behind Alert. Feature availability can vary by phone hardware, platform, and country. Samsung says Compass View, Ring Phone, and Left Behind Alert are unavailable on iOS; do not infer identical behavior across platforms.

  • History and alerts: Samsung says Location History can retain records for up to seven days. Its Canadian page labels Place Notification a trial feature.
  • Automation: SmartThings routines may be useful if you already use Samsung’s smart-home ecosystem; check the phone and account requirements for the specific routine you want.

How long does the battery last, and what upkeep is required?

SmartTag3 uses a replaceable CR2032 coin cell. Samsung estimates up to 550 days under standard use or up to 790 days in Power Saving Mode, based on internal lab tests; actual life varies with use and conditions. Power Saving Mode limits some features. Treat these as manufacturer estimates rather than a promise of a particular replacement date. Samsung Canada lists the battery and estimates.

The listed box contents are the tag with battery attached, a battery-tray ejection pin, and a quick-start guide. Budget separately for an attachment if the tag’s built-in form does not suit your keys, bag, or pet collar: Samsung lists a Silicone Case with metal carabiner/keyring and a Loop Case as separate accessories. Check that the case fits SmartTag3 and that its attachment is secure for the item you plan to track.

Is SmartTag3 durable enough for the way you’ll use it?

Samsung lists an IP67 rating and explains that the tag can withstand water up to 1 m deep for up to 30 minutes. The company cautions that water resistance can diminish over time and advises against beach or pool use. IP67 should not be read as permission to leave the tag submerged or expose it routinely to harsh conditions.

Samsung also warns that a detached tag can pose a swallowing hazard to young children and pets. Inspect the tag and its case or attachment regularly, especially when it is fitted to a pet’s collar or a child’s belongings. Samsung’s announcement includes the safety warning.

When does Galaxy SmartTag3 go on sale, and what does it cost?

As of October 7, 2026, Samsung said SmartTag3 would launch in Korea on October 7, followed by the U.S., with other markets following in 2027. Samsung Electronics America announced U.S. prices of $29.99 for one and $99.99 for a four-pack, with U.S. availability expected by early November 2026. These are announced prices and timing, not confirmation that a retailer has stock. Check Samsung’s live regional listing before relying on availability or price.

What else should you compare before choosing a tracker?

If you are weighing SmartTag3 against another tracker, compare the parts that affect whether it will work for you—not just the headline range or network size.

  • Support for your exact phone and the features available on it.
  • Whether directional finding needs UWB or Channel Sounding hardware.
  • The location network used in the places where you expect to search.
  • Range conditions, battery type and replaceability, and attachment options.
  • Water and dust protection, cross-platform sharing, local price, pack size, and availability.

Samsung’s published specifications are manufacturer claims; the sources cited here do not provide independent comparative performance testing. Samsung also says SmartTag3 is approximately 35% smaller by volume and 33% lighter than the previous generation; those are Samsung’s comparisons, not independent measurements. Its Canadian specifications list dimensions of 31 × 31 × 8.2 mm and weight of 9.15 g.
