What to Check Before Buying a Robotic Pool Vacuum

Before buying a robotic pool vacuum, match it to your pool’s dimensions, surface, shape, and required coverage. Then compare its power setup, filter, handling, warranty, and parts support.

Before buying a robotic pool vacuum, check three things: whether it fits your pool, whether its cleaning and power setup match your needs, and whether its filters, warranty, service, and replacement parts make sense for long-term ownership. Start with your pool’s dimensions, shape, and surface; then verify the exact areas the model cleans rather than assuming every robot handles walls, waterlines, steps, and ledges.

1. Will it fit your pool?

Start with the pool itself, not a feature list. Compare the vacuum’s stated pool-size rating with your pool’s dimensions, then check that the model is intended for your pool type and surface. Shape matters too: a design that works well in a straightforward rectangle may not suit every curve, corner, or unusual layout. Maytronics’ guides recommend matching the model’s size rating to the pool’s actual dimensions (manufacturer guide to robotic pool cleaners; U.S. manufacturer guide).

Make a pool-fit checklist

  • Measure the pool and compare its dimensions with the model’s stated capacity or rating.
  • Confirm compatibility with the pool’s surface and type.
  • Consider the shape, including curves and areas that may be difficult to reach.

2. What does it clean, and how is it powered?

“Robotic” does not automatically mean complete pool coverage. Check the specifications for each area you expect the vacuum to clean: floor, walls, waterline, steps, benches, and ledges. If a particular area matters to you, look for it to be named in the model’s coverage information rather than inferring it from a general cleaning claim. The manufacturer’s guides describe coverage and pool compatibility as model-dependent factors (Maytronics, Canada; Maytronics, U.S.).

Choose between a cord and a battery

A corded cleaner avoids a battery’s runtime limit, but you will need to manage the cable. A cordless model removes that cable, but it must be charged and can run only for its available runtime. Neither arrangement is automatically better: weigh cable handling against charging and the time needed to cover your pool.

Check the actual model’s cycle length and the areas it can cover in that cycle. Maytronics’ U.S. guide gives 1.5 to 4 hours as a typical standard-cycle duration; that is manufacturer guidance, not an independent measurement or a guarantee for every model (guide and stated cycle duration). For cordless models in particular, confirm the listed runtime and whether it suits the pool’s size and cleaning needs.

Check what happens to the debris

A robotic cleaner captures debris in its own filter rather than relying on the pool pump and plumbing. Maytronics contrasts this with suction and pressure cleaners, which use those systems (manufacturer explanation). Treat claims about efficiency as manufacturer claims unless independent evidence supports a specific savings figure; the cited guidance does not establish a quantified saving.

3. Will it be manageable to own?

Cleaning performance is only part of the routine. Consider how you will remove, empty, clean, and return the unit to the pool, and whether its filter suits the debris you actually encounter. Check how the filter is cleaned and whether replacement filters and other wear parts are available for the exact model.

Confirm the support details before purchase

  • Read the warranty terms, including what is covered and any exclusions.
  • Check whether local service is available if the unit needs repair.
  • Confirm that replacement filters and wear parts are sold and compatible with the specific model.
  • Look at how the cleaner is retrieved and handled after a cycle.

These details are especially important when comparing models: a headline feature is less useful if the model does not suit your pool, or if routine maintenance and service are difficult. The cited manufacturer pages identify these as factors to consider, but they do not provide independent side-by-side testing.

Compare models on the same criteria

Use the same checklist for each candidate so the comparison reflects your pool and routine, not just the features emphasized on a product page.

What to compare What to verify
Pool fit Pool-size rating, pool type, surface, and shape compatibility.
Coverage Whether it cleans the floor, walls, waterline, steps, benches, and ledges you need.
Power and cycle Corded or cordless operation, plus the specific model’s cycle length or battery runtime.
Filter and debris Filter design, suitability for your debris, and cleaning procedure.
Handling and support Retrieval effort, warranty terms, local service, and compatible replacement parts.

Manufacturer comparisons can help you locate specifications, but they are not independent performance tests. For example, Maytronics’ 2026 comparison listed prices of $1,199 for the Dolphin Nautilus EON 120d and $899 for the Dolphin Nautilus EON 100 when the page was accessed; those are manufacturer-listed prices from that page, not current market averages (Maytronics’ 2026 comparison). Recheck current pricing and specifications before relying on them.
