Before buying a robot for multi-step tasks, write down the exact sequence you need it to complete and check whether it can repeat that sequence in your home, recover from foreseeable problems, and do the work without too much human intervention. A general-purpose label or reference to a standard is not proof that a particular robot can do your job.
Define the job before comparing robots
Write the sequence in order
Describe the task as a series of observable steps: what condition starts it, what the robot must do, where it must go, and what counts as completion. Include the objects it must handle and the surfaces or rooms it must cross. For example, “move an item” is too vague; specify the item, its starting place, the destination, and how you will tell that the task is done.

Decide what failure means
Identify the steps that would make the robot unsuitable if it could not perform them. Note what must happen if it drops or misplaces an object, misunderstands an instruction, or cannot reach the destination. This gives you a practical basis for judging demonstrations and comparing candidates.
Ask for evidence of the whole task
Ask the seller or manufacturer to demonstrate the complete sequence in an environment resembling yours, including its least predictable step. Watch more than one run: a single successful attempt is weak evidence that a robot can do the task routinely. Compare demonstrations or published results only when they use the same task and comparable conditions.

Look for evidence tied to your specific objects, surfaces, instructions, and route. Do not assume that a robot can manipulate an object or interpret a sensor input simply because it is marketed as general-purpose. Record which steps it completes, which it misses, and whether a person needs to approve, reposition, or reset anything.
Check whether it fits your home
Assess the actual route, not just the robot in an open showroom. Measure or inspect the spaces it must use, and check the route for:
- Doorway width and narrow passages.
- Floor transitions, thresholds, ramps, and changes in surface.
- Clutter and objects that could block or confuse navigation.
- Lighting conditions relevant to the robot’s sensors.
- A usable place to dock or charge, with access along the route.
For manipulation, check the particular objects and surfaces involved in your task. Ask to see how the robot senses, approaches, and handles them rather than relying on a broad capability description.

Find out how it handles problems and human help
Ask what the robot does when a path is blocked, an object is dropped or misplaced, instructions are misunderstood, power or connectivity is interrupted, or the task is beyond its ability. A useful demonstration includes the response to a foreseeable problem, not only the successful path through the task.
For each step, note whether a person must intervene, approve an action, clear an obstacle, or restart the robot. Count this effort alongside task completion: a robot that reaches the end only after frequent hands-on help may not meet your need for automation.
Check safety for the task and people nearby
Safety depends on what the robot does and where it operates. Ask the manufacturer for the risk assessment and safeguards relevant to your task, and check how the robot can be stopped, paused, and recovered from foreseeable faults. Consider the people who may be nearby as well as the environment, operation, and maintenance involved.

ISO/TR 23482-2:2019 provides guidance for applying ISO 13482, including risk assessment and risk reduction for personal care robots and close human-robot interaction. OSHA’s robot guidance likewise emphasizes assessing the specific application, environment, operation, maintenance, and foreseeable failures. Neither source certifies a consumer model.
Understand what standards can—and cannot—tell you
Standards can help you ask structured questions, but their scope matters. A test method is not a pass mark, a safety certification, or evidence that a particular model will complete your sequence.
| Source | What it covers | How to use it as a buyer |
|---|---|---|
| GB/T 41433-2022, Household and similar service robots—Consumer guide | China’s standards catalogue lists it as current; its publication and implementation dates are 2022-04-15. | It confirms a formal consumer-guide category for household service robots. Its status as a Chinese national standard does not by itself establish legal requirements or certification elsewhere, or endorse a model. |
| IEC 62849:2025 | The edition published 2025-11-24 replaces the 2016 edition. It covers specified indoor, floor-supported wheeled or tracked robots no taller than 1.75 m, no wider than 700 mm, and with a maximum speed of 1.5 m/s. It excludes wet and dry surface-cleaning robots and combinations of those functions. | Its evaluation methods include mobility, navigation, energy use, environmental effects, obstacle avoidance, ramps, and thresholds. The IEC states: “This document is neither concerned with safety nor with performance requirements.” It does not establish a minimum acceptable result, so use its topics as prompts for a model-specific demonstration, not as a pass mark. |
| ISO/TR 23482-2:2019 and OSHA robot guidance | Guidance relevant to risk assessment and risk reduction, including personal care robots and close human-robot interaction; OSHA also highlights the application, environment, operation, maintenance, and foreseeable failures. | Use them to frame safety questions for the specific task and setting. Neither certifies a consumer model. |
| NIST response-robot standards program | Evaluates task-related areas including mobility, manipulation, sensors, energy, communications, human-robot interfaces, logistics, and safety. The program concerns emergency-response robots, not household consumer products. | Use its categories to make a task-specific comparison. Do not treat its tests as evidence that a domestic robot has passed them. |
Ask about data, charging, maintenance, and support
Ask the manufacturer what audio, video, location, or other data the robot collects; where it is processed or stored; what remote access is available; and how software updates and support work. IEC 62849:2025 is not a privacy certification; its surfaced description notes information security among areas that may be considered in future versions. Get current, product-specific answers rather than assuming a standard covers these issues.

Check the model’s documentation for power use, charging time and location, operating noise or other environmental effects, maintenance, consumables, warranty, repair options, and expected software support. These details vary by product and are not established for a particular model by the standards described here.
Compare candidates with the same scorecard
Use the same task sequence and evaluation criteria for every candidate. Give extra weight to any step whose failure would make the robot useless or unsafe for your intended use.
