There is no universally best automated pull request reviewer. GitHub Copilot is worth evaluating if your team already works in GitHub and pays for Copilot; CodeRabbit offers a dedicated, tiered review product; and Greptile is a candidate when repository context, multiple code-host integrations, or self-hosting matter. Choose by workflow fit, context, deployment controls, total cost, and how well a trial performs on your own code—not by a single benchmark score.
How to choose an automated PR code review tool
Automated review tools can surface potential bugs and explain code changes inside a pull-request workflow. They are an assistive layer, not a substitute for tests, security tools, or human review. Start with the constraints that are hardest to change later:
- Code host: Check whether the tool supports your actual GitHub, GitLab, or Bitbucket workflow and whether review comments appear where your developers work.
- Context: Determine whether the reviewer considers only the diff or also uses broader repository context. For larger codebases, ask how it handles repository indexing and relevant surrounding code.
- Controls and deployment: Verify automatic review triggers, configuration options, approval behavior, data handling, and whether self-managed deployment is available on the plan you need.
- Total cost: Compare per-seat fees with usage-based credits and any CI or Actions consumption. A subscription price alone may not describe the cost of frequent or large reviews.
- Signal quality: Trial tools on representative pull requests. Track useful findings, incorrect or irrelevant comments, and whether reviewers can act on suggestions without adding friction.

GitHub Copilot code review
Copilot code review is a natural option to assess for a GitHub-centered team already using Copilot. GitHub documents the feature across supported GitHub surfaces and IDEs. Automatic review behavior can depend on repository, organization, and user settings; by default, a pull request is reviewed once unless new-push reviews are configured. See GitHub’s code review documentation for current setup and behavior.
GitHub’s plans page lists code review as not included with Free and included with Pro, Pro+, and Max at the time checked. Check the current Copilot plans before choosing a plan.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Cost has two parts to consider. GitHub describes Lite and Balanced effort levels; Balanced uses more AI credits and may use more GitHub Actions minutes. Its documentation estimates $0.05–$1 in AI credits for a Lite review and $0.25–$5 for Balanced, excluding Actions minutes. Those are estimates that vary with pull-request size and custom instructions and may change as models evolve. Some files—including dependency-management files, logs, and SVGs—are excluded from review.
Copilot approval assessments do not count toward required approvals by default. GitHub labels approval assessments public preview and says they require configuration, so teams with branch-protection or approval policies should review the documentation rather than assume the AI review satisfies them.

CodeRabbit
CodeRabbit is a dedicated PR review product to evaluate if you want tiered features such as agentic reviews, triage, or change stacking. Its pricing page lists Essentials at $24, Team at $48, and Advanced at $72 per developer per month when billed annually; it also lists an Enterprise plan. The page says public repositories can receive free reviews after sign-up and installation. These are vendor-listed terms, not a guarantee that the same plans, prices, included limits, or public-repository conditions will remain available. Confirm them on CodeRabbit’s pricing page.
The pricing page also lists separately priced security scanning and agent runtime products. Treat those as distinct costs when comparing plans, and validate review quality in your own repositories rather than interpreting a feature list as a detection guarantee.

Greptile
Greptile says its reviews use repository context to analyze syntax, logic, and style issues and suggest fixes. Its site lists GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket, and Cursor Origin support, as well as enterprise and self-managed options. For teams with multiple code hosts or self-management requirements, confirm the exact integration and hosting terms for the plan under consideration directly with Greptile.
Greptile’s site describes a free Starter plan for one active developer, with unlimited repositories and 50 credits per month; Pro at $30 per seat per month with 50 credits per seat; and additional credits at $1 each. It lists review types costing 1, 3, or 10 credits. These are time-sensitive vendor claims. Model expected usage against the current credit rules before budgeting.

What the comparative evidence can—and cannot—tell you
Signal65’s 2026 report, Evaluating AI Code Review Tools: A Real-World Bug Detection Study, compared CodeRabbit, Cursor BugBot, GitHub Copilot, Greptile, and Qodo Merge. Researchers used ten historical bug-introducing pull requests in each of six open-source repositories, recreated the changes immediately before the bug, ran tools in isolation at default settings, and had analysts grade findings against a rubric. A bug counted only when a finding included an inline comment pointing to specific code lines.
The report gives CodeRabbit a precision result of 95.88%; it also says CodeRabbit led in critical bug detection in five of six repositories and had the fewest incorrect findings in four of six. These results describe that study’s 60 historical pull requests, six repositories, default configurations, and scoring method. They do not establish a universal winner: results may differ with a team’s languages, codebase, configuration, or current product versions, and the report describes repositories where other tools performed better. Read the Signal65 report for the methodology and full results.

A practical evaluation plan
- Shortlist by constraints. Remove products that do not support your code host, required deployment model, or review workflow.
- Confirm current terms. Check plan availability, prices, credit limits, included features, and any Actions or CI consumption on vendor pages before estimating cost.
- Use representative pull requests. Include changes from the languages and repositories the tool will actually review, plus examples of known bugs or tricky changes where possible.
- Compare findings consistently. Record actionable findings, incorrect comments, missed issues you already know about, and the review effort needed to verify suggestions.
- Keep human controls in place. Decide explicitly whether AI comments can affect approvals, who owns review responsibility, and how suggestions are checked before merging.
GitHub advises using Copilot together with good testing and code review practices, security tools, and your own judgment. That guidance is useful for any automated reviewer: let the tool add another source of feedback, while your team retains responsibility for the merge decision.
