Before you order a refrigerator online, confirm that the exact model will fit both its kitchen opening and the route into your home. Then check its capacity and layout, energy information, water and electrical requirements, and the seller’s full terms for delivery, installation, haul-away, returns, damage, and warranty coverage. The right appliance can still be the wrong purchase if it cannot get through the doorway or the final delivered-and-installed cost is higher than expected.
Start with the measurements, not the product photos
A refrigerator’s listed width, height, and depth are only part of the fit question. You need to know whether the cabinet opening can accommodate the appliance with the clearances its manual requires, whether the doors can open in the kitchen, and whether the delivery team can move it from the entrance to that opening.

Do not assume every refrigerator described as counter-depth, standard-depth, or a particular width will fit the same way. Models differ in body dimensions, handles, hinges, door swing, ventilation needs, and the space required to open drawers. Use the specification sheet and installation manual for the exact model number you are considering. If a retailer page and the manual give different dimensions, resolve the discrepancy with the seller or manufacturer before paying.

Measure the opening in several places
- Measure width. Measure the opening at the top, middle, and bottom. Note trim, cabinet edges, and anything else that reduces the narrowest point.
- Measure height. Measure from the floor to the lowest obstruction at more than one point. Include overhead cabinets, molding, and any unevenness in the floor.
- Measure depth. Record the available depth from the wall to the front edge of the surrounding cabinets or counter. Check whether the refrigerator’s published depth includes handles, doors, or hinges, and compare like with like.
- Check the floor and nearby obstacles. Look for baseboards, sloped or uneven flooring, heating or other obstructions, and anything that could affect how the appliance sits or moves into place.
- Compare the measurements with the manual. Allow for the model’s stated ventilation and installation clearances. Do not treat the bare opening dimensions as the required space.
Published manufacturer advice illustrates why model-specific checking matters. Bosch says to allow at least 1 inch at the sides, top, and back unless the particular model specifies otherwise. Frigidaire notes that an adjacent wall or cabinet may require 3–4 inches of additional width for a door to open, depending on the model. Those figures are examples of manufacturer guidance, not universal refrigerator dimensions or a substitute for the selected model’s manual.

Measure the entire delivery route
Measure the path from the delivery entrance to the refrigerator location: exterior doors, interior doors, hallways, turns, stairs, landings, and any other tight point. At each likely pinch point, check the clear width and height, including door frames and trim. Consider whether doors or removable obstructions can be taken off safely, and ask the seller or delivery provider whether the delivery team will remove refrigerator doors or other parts if needed.
LG’s refrigerator buying guidance recommends measuring the delivery path as well as the installation space. A wide hallway does not help if a turn, doorway, stairwell, or entry threshold blocks the appliance. Compare the route measurements with the product’s relevant shipping or delivery dimensions and ask the seller what dimensions its delivery team uses. If the retailer does not make that information clear, get an answer before scheduling; a failed delivery may involve extra charges or a new appointment under that seller’s terms.
Check door swing and usable access
Open the kitchen doors and drawers near the proposed refrigerator location. A refrigerator may fit in the opening but leave too little room for its doors to open fully, for a crisper or freezer drawer to slide out, or for someone to stand in front of it. Check which way the doors are hinged, whether the model’s doors can be reversed, and whether the hinge-side clearance changes when the doors are open. Confirm these details in the exact model documentation rather than relying on a general product-category description.

Compare more than the advertised cubic-foot capacity. Think about what you store, how you shop, and which shelves, bins, and drawers need to be accessible. A layout that works for frequent fresh-food shopping may not suit a household that stores bulky frozen items or large containers. Check shelf adjustment, door-bin arrangement, freezer organization, and drawer dimensions in the product details or manual where those measurements are available.
ENERGY STAR’s consumer guidance says its most energy-efficient refrigerator models are typically 16–20 cubic feet. That describes a range found among its most efficient models; it is not a universal recommendation for household size. A refrigerator that is too small for the way you use it may be inconvenient, while a larger appliance can use more energy. ENERGY STAR states, “Generally, the larger the refrigerator, the greater the energy consumption.” Choose capacity based on your actual storage needs, then compare energy use among models that can serve those needs.
Match the configuration to your habits
Common layouts place the freezer above, below, or beside the fresh-food compartment. The layout affects where frequently used food sits, how much room is available for wide items, and how the doors and drawers work in your kitchen. ENERGY STAR notes that top-freezer models tend to use the least energy compared with bottom-freezer and side-by-side styles. That is a useful point of comparison, not a reason to choose a layout that conflicts with your space or how you use the appliance.

Retailer photos can show a general layout but may not answer whether a specific shelf adjusts or whether a drawer clears a nearby wall. Use the model’s feature list and manual to confirm details that matter to your kitchen before checkout.

Compare energy use model by model
Check the exact refrigerator’s ENERGY STAR status and its EnergyGuide information or annual energy-use estimate, where available. Compare the annual-use figures between models of a similar size and configuration; a certification label alone does not tell you which of two certified appliances will use less electricity. The estimated energy cost shown on product information depends on assumptions and is not a promise of your household’s bill, which depends on electricity rates, use, and other conditions.
ENERGY STAR says certified refrigerators are about 9 percent more energy efficient than models meeting the federal minimum standard. This is a comparison of energy efficiency, not a guarantee of a 9 percent reduction in your bill. Certification criteria also depend on the refrigerator category. ENERGY STAR’s criteria page says standard-size refrigerators and refrigerator-freezers of at least 7.75 cubic feet must use 10 percent less measured energy than the federal minimum for the cited specification; that criteria page identifies a change dated August 5, 2021. Check the current status and category for the model rather than applying that threshold to every refrigerator type.
| Energy comparison | What the published figure means | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| ENERGY STAR certified refrigerators | About 9 percent more energy efficient than models meeting the federal minimum, according to ENERGY STAR consumer guidance accessed in 2026. | Use it to understand the certification comparison; do not treat it as a guaranteed bill reduction. |
| Specified standard-size refrigerators and refrigerator-freezers at least 7.75 cubic feet | The ENERGY STAR criteria page states 10 percent less measured energy than the federal minimum for the cited specification; the page identifies an August 5, 2021 criteria change. | Confirm that the product falls in the applicable category and check its current certification. |
| Modeled federal cost comparison | The U.S. Department of Energy Federal Energy Management Program’s guidance, updated December 2023, gives $45 in lifetime energy-cost savings for an ENERGY STAR refrigerator versus its less-efficient reference. The model assumes an 18.1-cubic-foot top-freezer refrigerator, federal-site electricity-price assumptions, and a 16.2-year product life. | Treat this as a federal modeled comparison, not a household savings forecast. |
When comparing the annual energy-use estimates for individual models, keep size and configuration in view. An estimate for a smaller refrigerator is not a like-for-like comparison with a much larger one. If the retailer’s listing does not show an annual-use figure or EnergyGuide information, look for the exact model’s official product documentation before deciding that an efficiency label or marketing claim is enough.
Check water, electrical, and ventilation requirements
Before ordering, find the installation instructions for the exact model and note the connections and clearances it requires. Do not assume that every refrigerator needs a water connection, or that every home connection is compatible with an ice maker or water dispenser. An appliance with a feature you do not intend to use may still have installation requirements worth checking in its manual.
Water supply for ice makers and dispensers
If the model has an ice maker or water dispenser, verify whether it needs a nearby working shut-off valve and what type and length of supply line the instructions permit. In its described refrigerator installation, Frigidaire specifies a working shut-off valve connected to a 1/4-inch stainless-steel water line within six feet of the appliance and on the same floor. This is Frigidaire-specific guidance; the selected model’s manual and the installer’s requirements take precedence.

Check whether the line is already present, where the valve is located, and whether the seller’s installation service includes connecting it. If a line or valve needs to be added or changed, establish who will do that work and what it will cost before placing the order. Do not buy a line based only on a general description: confirm its compatibility with the refrigerator and the installation instructions.
Electrical connection and ventilation
Read the manual for the selected model’s electrical requirements and ventilation clearances, then compare them with the outlet and space at home. The guidance reviewed here does not establish one electrical specification or clearance that applies to all refrigerators. Confirm the model’s requirements directly instead of inferring them from another appliance or a generic buying guide. If the outlet, placement, or clearance appears unsuitable, ask a qualified installer or the seller what must be changed before delivery.
Calculate the delivered and installed total
The price displayed beside an online listing may not be the amount required to get the refrigerator into the kitchen and ready to use. At checkout, determine which services are included and which are optional or separately charged. The terms can vary by retailer, location, delivery address, model, and service provider; there is no universal delivery price or installation package established here.

- Appointment and timing: Find out how the delivery window is set, whether someone must be present, and what happens if you need to reschedule.
- Placement: Verify whether delivery means drop-off at the entrance or placement in the room you choose. Confirm that moving the old appliance is not assumed to be part of this service.
- Installation: Check what the quoted service includes, such as leveling or connecting an existing compatible water line, and what it excludes.
- Extra work: Ask whether stairs, a difficult route, door removal, a new water line, or other access and hookup work can trigger a separate charge.
- Packaging: Confirm whether the delivery team removes packaging and whether that service has conditions.
- Failed delivery: Read what happens if the appliance cannot pass through the route, the delivery team cannot complete installation, or no one is available at the appointment.
Put the item price together with the delivery, installation, required connection work, and haul-away charges to compare total cost between sellers. If a service is described only in a general product listing, confirm the details for your address and exact model before relying on it. Retailer inventory, delivery coverage, and installation availability can differ, so a listing that appears available online is not by itself confirmation that every service is available where you live.

Decide what will happen to the refrigerator being replaced before the new one arrives. ENERGY STAR says many appliance retailers offer pickup and recycling when a replacement refrigerator is purchased and recommends recycling the old unit. “Many” does not mean every seller or delivery address is covered, so confirm pickup availability, any fee, and the seller’s eligibility conditions for your order.

Ask what preparation is required, including whether the old appliance must be empty, disconnected, or accessible in a particular way. Establish whether removal occurs during the same appointment as delivery and whether the delivery crew will take the old unit from its current location. If haul-away is unavailable or does not fit your needs, arrange a separate recycling or disposal option before scheduling the replacement.
Read return, damage, and warranty terms before paying
Do not assume online refrigerator purchases have a standard return window, damage-reporting deadline, or warranty. The terms depend on the seller, manufacturer, exact model, and applicable location. The information reviewed for this guide does not establish a universal return period, a standard deadline for reporting delivery damage, or uniform warranty coverage.
Seller terms: returns and delivery damage
Read the seller’s current terms for the specific purchase, including any rules for large appliances. Check when a return can be requested, whether the refrigerator must remain unused or in its original packaging, who arranges pickup, and whether delivery or removal fees are refundable. Confirm how to report damage or a missing part, what evidence the seller requests, and how quickly it must be submitted. Save the order confirmation and the terms that apply at checkout.
Inspect the appliance and its packaging promptly when it arrives, following the seller’s instructions for documenting a problem. If damage is visible, record it and contact the seller through its stated process rather than assuming the delivery team’s notes alone complete a claim. The applicable deadline and remedy are seller-specific, so know them before the appointment.
Manufacturer warranty for the exact model
Find the manufacturer warranty document for the precise model number, not just a general warranty summary for a product family. Check the covered components, duration, exclusions, and process for service. Also determine whether installation by a particular provider or a specific type of connection is required for any aspect of coverage. A seller’s return policy and a manufacturer’s warranty address different situations; read both rather than treating one as a substitute for the other.
Use this comparison worksheet before checkout
Compare the same information for every model or seller you are considering. Keep the exact model number alongside the details so that a specification or service term is not accidentally applied to a different version.
| Decision area | Record or verify |
|---|---|
| Fit | Model dimensions; opening measurements at multiple points; required clearances; door and drawer movement. |
| Delivery route | Narrowest doorways and turns, stair or landing constraints, and the seller’s relevant delivery dimensions. |
| Capacity and layout | Cubic-foot capacity, shelf and drawer arrangement, freezer access, and fit with the household’s storage habits. |
| Energy | ENERGY STAR status, EnergyGuide or annual-use estimate where available, and like-for-like model comparisons. |
| Connections | Model-specific electrical and ventilation requirements; water-line and shut-off requirements if applicable. |
| All-in cost | Item price plus delivery, installation, connection work, access charges, packaging removal, and haul-away. |
| Terms | Service area, appointment rules, failed-delivery handling, returns, damage reporting, and the exact model’s warranty. |
Make the purchase only after the measurements, service terms, and total cost are clear for your address and the exact model. If one of those details is missing from the listing, ask the seller or consult the model’s official manual before checkout rather than relying on a generic assumption.
