You can follow marked trails or head into the backcountry, meet other hikers and discover hidden treasures.
That combination gives the journey a clear destination without making every step feel like a straight line to it. If you want the pleasure of choosing a route, looking off the obvious path and making discoveries while you travel, this is the better match of the two recommendations. Its traversal is also part of the appeal: climbing and gliding are named activities, rather than the camera being the central tool.

- You want walking and route-finding to be a major part of play.
- You like having a destination while still being able to explore trails and backcountry routes.

If taking photographs matters most
Start with TOEM. Nintendo’s description puts photography at the center of uncovering mysteries, making it the more focused choice for camera-led discovery. It is not evidence of a match for MAFATE’s delivery role or animal abilities.
If you want animal abilities to open new areas
Neither recommendation is established as a direct match for that mechanic. MAFATE’s publisher description says animal abilities help you reach hidden areas; the cited descriptions for A Short Hike and TOEM do not say that either game uses animal abilities in the same way. The Steam listing gives A Short Hike a July 30, 2019 release date. Nintendo’s cited description of TOEM establishes its photography-led premise, but the available information here does not establish a release date, current platform list or price for it. Prices and storefront availability can change, so consult each game’s current official listing before purchasing. The same applies to MAFATE: the publisher page observed for this guide labels it “Coming Soon,” but that status may change.
