For either mode, reliable Wi-Fi where you intend to play matters. Portal is a screen-and-controls remote player, not a standalone PS5 or a PS4 accessory.
Choose between Remote Play and cloud streaming
These are separate ways to play, with different requirements. Remote Play streams games installed on your own PS5. Cloud streaming streams eligible games directly and can work when your PS5 is off or being used by another account.

For Remote Play, Sony says Portal requires at least 5 Mbps and recommends 15 Mbps for a better experience. Cloud streaming has separate minimums: 5 Mbps upload and download to establish a session, 7 Mbps for 720p, and 13 Mbps for 1080p. These are connection thresholds, not guarantees of smooth play; Sony notes that quality varies with the network environment and game. Test the connection in the rooms, home, or other locations where you expect to use Portal. A speed that meets Sony’s threshold does not ensure consistent performance if Wi-Fi is weak or congested. Public Wi-Fi can work, but connection quality and network sign-in steps may be outside your control. Consider whether you can get online and complete any required validation before relying on Portal away from home.

Verify cloud-streaming eligibility before paying for Premium
If you are buying Portal to play without using your PS5, confirm all of the following before counting on cloud streaming:
- Your PlayStation Plus plan is Premium.
- Your account meets the eligible-adult-account requirement.
- Your country or region supports Portal cloud streaming; availability can change, so check Sony’s current country and region information.
- The particular game you want is eligible to stream. Eligibility is not universal across games.
Check the games and features you care about
Do not assume every PS5 game or console feature will work on Portal. Sony excludes games that require a VR headset and certain additional peripherals. PS5 apps in the Media tab are not supported over Remote Play. If a particular title or media app is the reason you are considering the device, check its requirements and mode compatibility first.

Make sure the audio setup suits you
Portal supports wired audio through its 3.5 mm headphone jack and wireless audio devices that use PlayStation Link, including PULSE Explore and PULSE Elite. A compatible headset is optional, not a requirement for using Portal; check how you prefer to listen before buying additional audio gear.
Keep software updates in mind
Portal capabilities can change through system software updates. Sony’s notes list version 7.0.0 as adding a 1080p High Quality option, and version 7.0.2 as improving performance and stability. Check the official system software notes for current version details and changes.

Use this quick buying-fit checklist
- Buying for Remote Play: You own a PS5, can pair it with Portal, and can keep the console online and powered on or in Rest Mode.
- Buying to play without the console: You have Premium, an eligible adult account, live in a supported region, and have checked that your target games can be streamed.
- Buying for a specific game: It does not require an incompatible VR headset or peripheral, and it is available in the mode you intend to use.
- Buying for travel or other rooms: Wi-Fi is available where you plan to play, and you are comfortable with possible public-network sign-in and quality limitations.
