How PlayStation Portal Remote Play Works—and What You Need

PlayStation Portal Remote Play streams a compatible game running on your PS5 to the Portal over Wi-Fi. You need a PS5 that is online and switched on or configured to wake from Rest Mode, plus a PlayStation account and an internet connection. The Portal is a remote player, not a standalone console. A separate cloud-streaming option can play select PS5 games without your own PS5, but it requires PlayStation Plus Premium and is limited by title and region.

How PlayStation Portal Remote Play works

With ordinary Remote Play, the PS5 runs the game and sends its video and audio to the Portal; controls you use on the Portal are sent back to the console. You can use it at home while someone else has the TV, or connect away from home over broadband Wi-Fi, provided the PS5 is online and both network connections are suitable.

The Portal has an 8-inch LCD and supports play at up to 1080p and 60 frames per second, according to Sony’s product explainer. Those specifications do not guarantee a particular picture quality or responsiveness: the connection between the Portal, internet and PS5 affects the experience.

What you need for ordinary PS5 Remote Play

  • A PlayStation Portal Remote Player and a PS5. Portal Remote Play supports PS5, not PS4.
  • A PlayStation account, with the same account signed in on the PS5 and Portal for the documented setup.
  • Broadband internet connected to the PS5 and Wi-Fi for the Portal. Sony says at least 5 Mbps is required for Portal use and recommends at least 15 Mbps for a better Remote Play experience. These are connection-speed guidelines, not a guarantee of stable, low-latency play.
  • Remote Play enabled on the PS5: open Settings > System > Remote Play and turn on Enable Remote Play.

Allow the PS5 to wake from Rest Mode

If you want to connect while the PS5 is in Rest Mode, enable both network options on the console. Open Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode, then turn on Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning on PS5 from Network. The console must be on or in Rest Mode; a fully powered-off PS5 cannot be reached through ordinary Remote Play.

Improve the connection

Sony recommends connecting the PS5 to the router with an Ethernet cable where practical and using 5 GHz Wi-Fi for the Portal. If the PS5 uses Wi-Fi, Sony recommends having both devices on the same Wi-Fi network. If a router’s band steering moves the Portal between 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz and causes problems, Sony suggests disabling that feature. A speed test alone cannot show whether the connection has suitable stability or latency.

Some public Wi-Fi networks require an additional sign-in step. Sony documents support for certain public networks that use this kind of validation on newer Portal system software; you may need a phone or tablet to complete the sign-in. Sony says to complete the Portal’s initial setup on home Wi-Fi first. Public-network quality and access rules can vary.

Does Remote Play require PlayStation Plus?

No PlayStation Plus membership is generally required just to start Remote Play. A particular game’s online multiplayer features may have their own membership requirement. PlayStation Plus Premium is required for the separate Portal cloud-streaming feature, not for ordinary Remote Play.

How Portal cloud streaming differs

Cloud streaming sends an eligible game from Sony’s service directly to the Portal, rather than using your PS5 to run it. That means your PS5 can be off or being used by another account. This is a separate mode from Remote Play: it does not make every game in your PS5 library available, and it has additional account, subscription, network and regional requirements.

What to compare PS5 Remote Play Portal cloud streaming
Where the game runs On your PS5, from a compatible game installed on the console. On Sony’s service, for select eligible PS5 games.
Does your PS5 need to be available? Yes. It must be online, on or in configured Rest Mode. No. It can be off or used by another account.
Subscription No general PlayStation Plus requirement to start Remote Play; game features may impose one. Active PlayStation Plus Premium membership required.
Internet-speed guidance Sony says 5 Mbps minimum for Portal use and recommends 15 Mbps for a better experience. Sony’s current guidance says 5 Mbps upload and download to start a session, 7 Mbps for 720p and 13 Mbps for 1080p.

Cloud-streaming requirements and game availability

To use cloud streaming on Portal, Sony requires a Portal, a PlayStation account on an adult account, an active PlayStation Plus Premium membership, broadband Wi-Fi and a supported country or region. The feature is not available to child accounts. Sony’s published speed thresholds are minimums: 5 Mbps upload and download to establish a session, 7 Mbps for 720p, and 13 Mbps for 1080p. They do not promise uninterrupted play; Sony says performance depends on the game and network quality.

Cloud-streaming selection includes eligible PS5 games, such as select digital games from your library and select games in the PlayStation Plus catalog. The available titles and countries can change. Sony’s current guidance lists the United States, Canada, Japan, the United Kingdom and supported European countries; check the current country and account requirements for your location. Before subscribing for a particular game, check the Portal’s Cloud Streaming section or Sony’s cloud-streaming game finder. The cited guidance concerns eligible PS5 titles; it does not establish Portal cloud streaming support for PS4 or PS3 games.

Compatibility and audio limits

Portal Remote Play is for PS5, not PS4. Games that require PlayStation VR or PS VR2, or certain additional peripherals, are not compatible with Portal Remote Play. Check Sony’s compatibility guidance if you are buying the device for a specific game or setup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For audio, Sony documents built-in speakers, wired headsets or earbuds connected through the 3.5 mm input, and PlayStation Link wireless audio devices. Wireless audio compatibility is not universal: check that a device uses PlayStation Link rather than assuming any Bluetooth headset will work.

Quick decision check

  • Choose Remote Play if you have a PS5 and want to stream compatible games installed on it. Keep the console online and enable Remote Play.
  • Consider cloud streaming if you want to play an eligible title without using your PS5 and meet the Premium, adult-account and supported-region requirements.
  • For a particular game, verify Remote Play compatibility or current cloud-streaming eligibility before relying on the Portal to play it.

See Sony’s Portal Remote Play setup instructions for the current console and connection steps.
