Before buying a phone advertised as 90Hz or 120Hz, check more than its maximum refresh rate. Find out whether that rate is fixed or adaptive, when the phone actually uses it, whether resolution or power settings restrict it, and how the display performs on brightness, detail and panel quality. A higher number can make supported interactions look smoother, but it does not guarantee that every app or game runs at that rate—or that the phone is right for your eyes and battery priorities.
What does a high refresh rate tell you?
Samsung Support defines refresh rate as “the number of times a display can update its image in 1 second.” A 120Hz display can update up to 120 times per second, but the label alone does not tell you how often the phone uses that rate. The maximum may be available only in certain modes or conditions, and the content and app also affect what you see. Samsung’s Galaxy refresh-rate guidance explains its settings and model-dependent behavior.

Do not treat the display’s refresh rate as a promise of a game’s frame rate. A panel’s maximum and a game’s rendered frame rate are different things; the published specifications cited here do not establish that every game renders at the display’s maximum. Likewise, a high refresh rate does not by itself guarantee that videos look smoother or sharper.
Check the refresh-rate range and control mode
Look for the supported range and the available setting—not just “up to 120Hz.” A fixed high option, an adaptive mode and a display with a disclosed low-to-high range describe different behavior. Adaptive modes can change the refresh rate according to what is happening on screen; a maximum is a ceiling, not necessarily the rate in use at every moment.

When comparing phones, note the minimum rate if the manufacturer publishes one, the maximum, whether the mode is fixed or adaptive, and whether you can choose or disable it. The setting’s name and available rates can differ by model and software version.
Find out what happens to battery life and power-saving modes
A high refresh rate can use more power, but there is no universal runtime penalty that applies to every phone or use pattern. Samsung says its fixed High option uses more battery than Standard and describes Adaptive as aiming to balance smoothness with battery life in less demanding situations. Google says Smooth Display increases battery usage and is disabled while Battery Saver is on. Google’s Pixel settings guidance describes that behavior.

Power-saving modes can also limit the rate. Apple says Low Power Mode limits the refresh rate to 60 frames per second on iPhone models with ProMotion. Check how the exact phone behaves when its battery-saving mode is enabled, and whether you can keep a high-rate option on or turn it off. Apple’s Power Modes guidance documents the iPhone behavior.

Check whether resolution or other settings restrict the high rate
Some Galaxy devices do not support 120Hz at WQHD+ resolution; Samsung says selecting that resolution can automatically switch the display to Standard. On supported models, a power-saving mode can also set the screen to Standard. These constraints are device-dependent, so check the combination you actually intend to use: screen resolution, refresh setting and power mode. Samsung’s instructions and caveats cover these Galaxy settings.

Compare the whole display, not one number
Refresh rate describes how frequently the display can update. It does not describe how much detail the screen shows, the panel technology, or how bright it gets. Compare resolution and pixels per inch (PPI) for detail, panel type for the technology used, and brightness specifications for visibility. Manufacturers may label brightness figures as typical, HDR, outdoor or peak; keep those labels attached rather than treating unlike measurements as directly comparable.
For example, Google’s Pixel specifications list resolution, PPI, OLED type, refresh range and brightness information by model. Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro specifications pair ProMotion up to 120Hz with OLED, resolution and brightness figures. These are manufacturer specifications for named models, not a cross-brand test or ranking. Google’s Pixel hardware specs and Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro tech specs show the broader display details.

Consider comfort and how you use the phone
A 120Hz rating cannot establish whether a particular display will feel comfortable to you. The manufacturer sources cited here describe refresh behavior and specifications, but do not provide consistent cross-brand flicker measurements or establish that a high refresh rate prevents eye strain. If you are sensitive to display flicker, look for reliable measurements for the exact model and assess that device at the brightness you normally use. Do not assume a high refresh rate alone will resolve discomfort.

A practical checklist for comparing phones
- Refresh behavior: Record the maximum and, if stated, minimum rate; check whether the phone offers fixed and adaptive modes.
- Control: Confirm where the setting is and whether you can disable the high-rate mode.
- Battery behavior: Read the manufacturer’s guidance on the high-rate option, adaptive mode and battery-saving settings.
- Resolution constraints: Verify whether your preferred resolution keeps the high-rate option available.
- Display quality: Compare resolution, PPI, panel type and brightness, preserving each manufacturer’s brightness labels.
- Suitability: Consider your preferred size and viewing conditions; if flicker is a concern, seek model-specific evidence rather than relying on the refresh-rate number.
