What to Check Before Buying a Laptop for Linux

Match the exact laptop configuration to compatibility information for your intended Linux distribution and release. Ubuntu certification is useful evidence for Ubuntu, not every Linux system.

Before buying a laptop for Linux, check the exact hardware configuration against compatibility information for the distribution and release you intend to install. A product-family name or a similar model listing is not enough: CPU, graphics, and wireless options can differ. Ubuntu certification is useful evidence for Ubuntu, but it does not certify a laptop for every Linux distribution.

1. Choose the Linux distribution and release first

Compatibility evidence is meaningful only in context. Note which distribution and release you plan to use, then look for support information for that system. Canonical’s Ubuntu certified laptop catalogue is specifically for Ubuntu; it does not establish identical support on another distribution, kernel, or release. If you plan to install a different system, check its own hardware-support information.

2. Match the listing to the exact laptop configuration

Search by the candidate’s precise model or configuration, not just the brand or product-family name. Compare the listed CPU, graphics hardware, and wireless hardware with the configuration you intend to order. A certified entry for a related model is not confirmation for a differently equipped version.

Canonical’s catalogue provides configuration-level entries and Ubuntu release filters. Check that the entry corresponds to both the hardware you are buying and the Ubuntu release you intend to run. If you are comparing two laptops, apply the same exact-match standard to each rather than treating a similar name as evidence.

3. Understand what Ubuntu certification establishes

Canonical describes certification as physical-device testing, with more than 500 OS compatibility-focused hardware tests. Its published test areas include audio, Ethernet, wireless, TPM, Bluetooth, USB, firmware, power management, WWAN, media cards, memory, and CPU. Canonical also describes continued testing of certified systems through the Ubuntu release life cycle. See Canonical’s Ubuntu certification overview for the scope it describes.

This is useful evidence for a matching configuration and Ubuntu release, not a blanket promise about every feature, future software combination, or Linux distribution. Treat the specific catalogue entry and its release information as the relevant evidence.

4. Check the features you actually rely on

Make a short checklist based on how you will use the laptop. Confirm available evidence for the functions that matter most to you, especially wireless, graphics, firmware, and power management. The certification overview names several test areas, but that does not establish support for every optional component or every possible use.

  • Connectivity: Check the exact wireless hardware and any wired networking or Bluetooth functions you need.
  • Graphics: Verify the graphics configuration rather than relying on the laptop family name.
  • Firmware and power management: Look for evidence relevant to your target system and the behaviors important to your use.
  • Ports and optional devices: Confirm that the specific connections or devices you need are covered by the available compatibility information. Support for every optional device is not established by a general certification listing.

5. If the laptop is not listed

An absent catalogue entry does not prove that a laptop is incompatible. It means the catalogue does not establish certification for that exact configuration. Look for compatibility information from the distribution you plan to use, and avoid treating an unlisted configuration as certified based only on a similar model.
