The market figures point to momentum, but they do not settle whether the products have broken through socially. The Los Angeles Times, citing IDC, reported that Meta held about 69% of the smart-glasses market in Q1 2026. The Times also reported that the global market value of certain types of smart glasses more than tripled year over year in that quarter; its report excerpt did not give a denominator or full methodology for that measure. Neither figure covers all wearables or all AI hardware.
Why has the reputation become a problem?
A camera on familiar-looking eyewear can make recording feel less conspicuous than holding up a phone. The Los Angeles Times reported on August 7, 2026, that viral videos showed people appearing to film strangers without their consent. It also described bans or restrictions at some cafes, courtrooms and universities, and public pressure on Meta to address privacy. These are reported incidents and responses, not evidence that every wearer records people improperly.

One person featured in the Times report, Gaby Luisa, said she had been filmed without her knowledge or permission: “It’s really weird to monetize off of people, and they’re not even aware that they’re being recorded.” The Times also reported the label “pervert glasses” in public discourse, attributing its popularization to Jimmy Kimmel. Such reactions capture a reputational risk: bystanders may not know when a camera is being used, even if a device has a recording indicator.

Privacy is also a question for the wearer. In a September 25, 2026 interview, The Atlantic discussed what users may share with Meta AI and the implications of facial recognition. The interview recounted Meta’s earlier confirmation that imagery shared with Meta AI may be used to improve its models, and a 2025 email to owners concerning defaults for AI features and voice recording. It also distinguished facial-recognition development from a shipped feature: the interviewer said that capability had not shipped at the time of the interview, while referring to reporting about internal plans and code. Meta told the Los Angeles Times: “The people who use them and those around them need to trust them. That’s why we built privacy into our AI glasses from the ground up.” The Times reported that Meta had updated software to disable cameras if they were tampered with, and that the company said it planned stronger protections as capabilities expand. It also reported that Instagram disabled accounts and removed some prank or pickup videos under its harassment and bullying rules. These steps do not establish that misuse has been eliminated.
Is the backlash stalling a breakout?
There is not enough evidence to say that criticism has dented sales—or that it has not. The Los Angeles Times quoted an IDC director saying it was too early to know whether the backlash would affect sales. The reported Q1 market-share and market-value figures show category activity, but they cannot answer how buyers respond to reputational concerns or how those concerns may change over time.

That distinction matters because adoption and acceptance are different measures. A person may find a device useful, buy it, and still avoid using its camera around friends or strangers. Why does familiar form help—and where does it fall short?
Glasses build on a familiar object; pins, pendants, wristbands and clip-on recorders ask users to add a new one. That is a useful design comparison, not a universal rule about what people will adopt. TechCrunch’s November 2, 2025 interview with investor Kevin Rose makes the social dimension explicit. Describing a moment when he tried to consult an AI pin’s logs during an argument, Rose said he decided not to wear it again. His test for hardware was not simply whether it worked: “As an investor, you kind of have to not only say, okay, cool tech, sure, but emotionally, how does it make me feel? And how do others feel around me?” CJ Dyas’s March 13, 2026 opinion essay similarly argues that wearables are more likely to succeed when they extend familiar products and complement smartphones. That is a design thesis, not settled proof of market outcomes.
What should buyers and makers judge beyond the feature list?
Hands-free convenience is only one part of whether an AI wearable belongs in daily life. A more useful assessment asks how it behaves in real settings and what it asks of both the wearer and everyone nearby.
