What to Check Before Buying a High-Memory AI Workstation

A practical checklist for matching an AI workstation to your workload, with clear checks for GPU memory, system RAM, PCIe layout, power, cooling, storage, and OEM validation.

Before buying a high-memory AI workstation, start with the workloads you plan to run, then verify GPU memory, system RAM, PCIe layout, power, cooling, and storage against the exact configuration. A large VRAM figure matters only if the model fits and the rest of the system can feed and support the GPU.

Start with the workload, not the GPU

Local inference, fine-tuning, training, and mixed graphics-and-AI work place different demands on a workstation. A larger GPU memory pool can let a model or workload fit locally, but it does not by itself determine throughput or system suitability. Also consider system memory, data movement, PCIe topology, cooling, and the number of GPUs you actually need.

  • Local inference: Estimate whether the model and its working data can fit in GPU memory, while accounting for the particular model and inference setup.
  • Fine-tuning or training: Check both GPU memory and system memory, and consider how data will be staged and moved between storage and GPUs.
  • Mixed graphics and AI: Confirm that the GPU and workstation fit both the AI workload and any graphics applications, including their software and compatibility requirements.

NVIDIA positions the RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell Workstation Edition as a single-GPU workstation product for AI development and data-intensive tasks. That is a product-use description, not a promise that one configuration suits every workload.

How much VRAM do you need?

GPU memory (VRAM) and system RAM are different resources. VRAM is on the GPU and is where GPU workloads keep data they need to access directly. System RAM holds models streamed into GPU memory and stages data between storage and GPUs, according to NVIDIA’s multi-GPU AI PC guide.

  • High-Performance AI Processor:The MS-02 Ultra features an Intel Core Ultra 9 285HX (24C/24T, up to 5.5 GHz, 13 TOPS NPU), delivering fast and efficient performance for AI inference, algorithm development, and media workloads. A PCIe x16 expansion slot supports desktop-class GPU upgrades for advanced model training and accelerated computing tasks. It's ideal for creators, engineers, and teams handling intensive parallel workloads.
  • 4 × M.2 PCIe 4.0 + 4 × DDR5 SODIMM slots:Four DDR5 SODIMM slots support up to 256 GB of memory, while ECC helps maintain data integrity in mission-critical environments. Four PCIe 4.0 M.2 slots support up to 24 TB of storage, supporting RAID 0/1/5/10, combining high-speed performance with data protection. It allows for the creation of independent scratch disks, media libraries, and project drives, providing high-throughput for production workflows.
  • PCIe & USB 4.0 v2: Up to three PCIe slots can be equipped, including a dual-slot x16 GPU. The main slot supports PCIe 5.0, meeting the needs of high-bandwidth creative and computing workloads. USB 4.0 v2 (80Gbps) supports high-bandwidth external storage and displays.
  • Ultra-fast Networking: Wi-Fi 7 further enhances wireless performance with next-generation speeds and low-latency stability. Intelligent bandwidth switching optimizes throughput in different network environments, ensuring optimal performance for enterprise or local networks. Dual 25GbE ports (providing up to approximately 3.125 GB/s bandwidth, about 25 times faster than traditional 1GbE), enabling seamless large-scale file transfers and parallel computing. 10GbE and 2.5GbE ports, with support for Intel vPro technology, ensure enterprise-grade remote management and deployment flexibility.
  • Server-grade thermal architecture: Utilizing a dedicated CPU/GPU airflow design, equipped with a 6-pipe dual-fan cooler, it maintains stable performance even under sustained loads, delivering up to 140W Turbo power while maintaining a 100W TDP, and operating with noise levels as low as 36 dB. An integrated 350W power supply ensures stable and reliable output for demanding computing tasks and fully loaded extended configurations.

For a concrete high-memory example, NVIDIA specifies the RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell Workstation Edition with 96 GB of ECC GDDR7 GPU memory. That figure describes this model, not a minimum requirement for all AI workstations. Compare GPUs by memory capacity and type, and check whether ECC is specified if it matters to your work.

Do not treat published system-RAM recommendations as interchangeable rules. NVIDIA’s multi-GPU consumer build guide calls for at least 64 GB of system RAM and recommends 128 GB for the guide’s described 100-billion-parameter LLM or fine-tuning workloads. Separately, NVIDIA’s certified server configuration guidance recommends system memory of at least twice total GPU memory for its inference and deep-learning server configurations. The latter is server guidance, not a universal desktop requirement.

Check the PCIe layout and lane sharing

Do not judge a motherboard by the number of physical x16-length slots. The slot’s electrical lane width and PCIe generation determine the connection available to the GPU. NVIDIA’s multi-GPU guide warns that many consumer boards wire secondary slots at x1 or x4, and that M.2 drives can share lanes. Its certified server guidance likewise says GPUs should use slots that meet the specified PCIe speed and lane width, with balanced topology recommended for server configurations.

  • Read the motherboard or system manual for the electrical lane width and PCIe generation of each intended GPU slot.
  • Check whether installing a second GPU or an M.2 drive changes slot width, disables a slot, or shares lanes.
  • For a prebuilt system, verify the actual configured slot and GPU combination rather than relying on a general chassis or motherboard description.

Match power, connectors, and cooling to the exact build

Power and cooling requirements depend on the specific GPU and enclosure. NVIDIA lists the RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell Workstation Edition at 600 W, with a dual-slot form factor, PCIe Gen 5 x16 interface, and double-flow-through cooling. Confirm that the complete workstation has the necessary power capacity, cable connections, physical clearance, and airflow for the exact card.

Ideal for gaming, video editing, and multitasking, it provides expansive and crisp multi-display support.

A separate NVIDIA example illustrates why multi-GPU power advice must remain configuration-specific: for two RTX 5090 GPUs paired with a Ryzen 9 9950X, NVIDIA states a 1600 W minimum PSU, recommends 1800 W for headroom, and requires a dedicated 12V-2×6 cable per GPU. These figures apply to that example, not to every multi-GPU workstation. Do not select a PSU from GPU count alone; check the requirements for the complete system and each component.

  • Verify the GPU’s rated power draw and required power connectors.
  • Check the PSU’s capacity and available compatible cables for the full configuration.
  • Confirm card length, slot thickness, and clearance, along with the chassis airflow path and cooling design.
  • For multiple GPUs, make sure the case and cooling solution can handle the heat from all cards under the intended workload.

Plan storage without sacrificing GPU lanes

Local models and datasets can require substantial storage, so include capacity and drive speed in the build plan. NVIDIA’s multi-GPU guide favors one high-capacity PCIe Gen 5 NVMe drive for its example and warns that additional M.2 drives can reduce GPU lane availability. Check the motherboard’s lane-sharing table before adding drives: storage expansion can affect the slots intended for GPUs.

Choose a prebuilt system by its exact configuration

NVIDIA says its certified workstation systems are tested with supported GPUs and validated for performance, reliability, and compatibility with NVIDIA software and services. Its certification directory says: “NVIDIA-Certified systems are tested with each supported NVIDIA GPU to ensure that they can work together to provide the highest level of performance and reliability.” Certification is a useful compatibility signal, but it does not replace checking the configuration being sold.
