Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteBefore buying a GPU for AI, confirm that it can run your specific model and software, has enough memory for your intended settings, performs well on your actual workload, and fits your computer’s power, cooling, and physical limits. There is no universally best AI GPU: the right choice depends on whether you are training, fine-tuning, or running inference, as well as your budget, operating system, and deployment setup.
1. Define the workload before comparing cards
“AI project” can mean training a model, fine-tuning one, running a local language model, or generating images. Those tasks do not necessarily place the same demands on memory, throughput, software, or the rest of the system. Also decide whether the GPU will go in a personal workstation or a shared server; scale and deployment conditions change what matters.

Use product categories as vendor guidance, not as a performance verdict. AMD describes its Instinct GPUs as built for training, large-scale inference, and HPC, while positioning Radeon for local LLMs, graphics, and creative workflows. Those descriptions do not prove that a particular card is suitable for your model or faster than a competitor. AMD ROCm GPU and system information

2. Check whether the model and settings fit in GPU memory
Look up the exact card or board-partner SKU’s GPU memory capacity, then estimate requirements for the model and the way you plan to run it. Model size is only part of the calculation: precision or quantization, context length, batch size, and other workload settings also affect memory use. A GPU marketed for AI is not automatically large enough for your intended configuration, and no single VRAM minimum applies to every project.

These are vendor-reported capacities, not a recommendation or a guarantee that any of the cards will accommodate a particular model and settings. AMD GPU architecture and specifications
Memory configurations can differ even within one product family. NVIDIA lists the GeForce RTX 5060 Ti in 16 GB and 8 GB GDDR7 versions, while the RTX 5060 is listed with 8 GB. 3. Verify support for the exact GPU and software stack
Compatibility depends on more than the vendor. Check the exact GPU target, framework and libraries, driver, operating system, and software release you intend to use. A compatibility statement for one release or operating system should not be assumed to cover another.

- Confirm that your intended framework and required libraries support the GPU and release you plan to install.
- Check the operating-system and driver requirements for that specific software path.
- For AMD, distinguish compute support from graphics support; do not infer one from the other.
- Recheck the compatibility documentation close to purchase, since support is version-specific.
4. Compare performance on the work you will actually run
Shortlist cards using relevant evidence: memory capacity, supported precision and framework features, and performance on your intended model and software path. A peak or marketing figure is not a substitute for a benchmark using comparable settings and the software version you plan to run.
When reviewing a benchmark, look for the model, precision or quantization, batch and context settings, framework and software versions, test date, and system configuration. Note whether each result uses a different vendor software path. AMD has published local-AI comparisons involving the Radeon AI PRO R9700 and RTX 5080, but differing software paths and dated test configurations mean those results should be read with their stated conditions and vendor attribution. They do not establish a universal cross-vendor winner. AMD’s Radeon AI PRO R9700 local-AI performance material

5. Make a workload-specific shortlist
Use the same project assumptions for each candidate. Otherwise, a comparison can obscure the very differences you need to decide on.
| Check | What to compare | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Workload and deployment | Training, fine-tuning, inference, or image generation; workstation or shared server | These choices shape relevant memory, throughput, and system needs. |
| GPU memory | Capacity and memory type for the exact GPU or SKU | Memory limits whether intended models and settings can fit. |
| Software support | Frameworks, libraries, drivers, operating system, GPU generation, and release | Support is specific to software versions and configurations. |
| Workload performance | Results using the intended model, precision, batch or context settings, and software | Peak figures may not predict performance on your project. |
| System fit | Dimensions, slot width, motherboard slots and lanes, cooling, PSU, and connector | Checks that the card can be installed and powered reliably. |
| Total cost and ownership | Local price, power use, warranty and support, and any upgrade needs | The complete system cost can exceed the GPU’s purchase price. |
6. Check power, connectors, cooling, and physical fit
Confirm that your case, motherboard, and power supply can support the exact card you are buying. Check its length and slot width, available motherboard slot and lane configuration, cooling clearance, PSU capacity, and required power connector and cable. If the existing PSU or case is not adequate, include a compatible replacement or other system upgrade in the purchase decision.

7. Calculate the project’s total cost
Compare the local price of the exact GPU configuration, not just a family name or an old quoted price. Availability and prices vary by region and retailer. Add any necessary PSU, cable, case, memory, storage, or platform upgrade to the cost, and account for power use, warranty, and support when weighing ownership.
