Are foldable phones durable?
There is no single durability answer for all foldables. Flexible inner screens need more careful handling than conventional phone screens, and water and dust protection varies by model. Manufacturer specifications and care guidance can help you understand a phone’s limits, but they do not establish how long a particular handset will last. No directly comparable independent lifetime or repair-cost dataset is available for the cited models, so avoid treating a fold-cycle claim or a brand’s design description as a proven lifespan.

The inner screen and factory film need care
Google warns that flexible screens are softer than traditional phone screens and advises keeping crumbs, fingernails and sharp objects away. Samsung describes a layered display that includes film, a protective layer and Ultra Thin Glass, and cautions that impacts, sharp objects and debris can cause damage. Follow the care instructions for the exact model.
Inspect the inner film for bubbles, lifting and scratches, but do not peel it back to look underneath. Samsung advises against casually removing or replacing the main-screen protector and recommends authorized service if it needs replacement. Its guidance also warns against attaching adhesive accessories to the main display. Google likewise tells Pixel Fold owners not to peel or replace the pre-installed protector.

Water resistance does not mean dust resistance
Check the exact model and generation rather than relying on the word “water-resistant.” Samsung’s care guidance distinguishes IP48 foldables from older listed IPX8 models and says its foldables are not dust resistant. Google’s Pixel Fold guide describes an IPX8 rating but also says the phone is not dust resistant and that water resistance is not permanent. Motorola’s Razr Fold guidance describes ingress tests conducted in controlled conditions and warns that resistance can decline with normal wear; dust can reduce hinge life or damage the display.
Ratings have limits. Samsung advises against beach or pool use and says not to let liquids or particles enter its foldables. Google warns against submerging the Pixel Fold and exposing it to dusty environments. Motorola advises avoiding dust and liquids beyond the specified test conditions, including salt water and pressure. Damage, ordinary wear or repair may affect protection, so use the manufacturer’s current care guide for the handset you are considering.

What to inspect on the phone
Hinge and frame
- Open and close the phone normally. Look for consistent motion, without forcing it or inserting anything into the hinge.
- Check for visible impact damage, looseness, uneven closing or abnormal gaps.
- Listen for unusual sounds, but do not diagnose a fault from a minor sound alone. Samsung notes that slight edge gaps or faint sounds can be normal on its devices; compare what you see and hear with that model’s official guidance.
- Do not assume a seller’s claim that the hinge is new proves long-term durability.
Inner and cover screens
- Check both screens for cracks, black spots, lines, dead areas, pressure marks and damage around the crease.
- Check the fitted inner film for lifting, bubbles or scratches without removing it.
- Ask how any screen-film replacement would be handled. For models whose makers require it, use authorized service rather than peeling or replacing the film yourself.
Model identity and environmental limits
Confirm the exact model number and generation, then look up that handset’s ingress rating and care instructions. Water protection and dust protection are separate concerns, and ratings do not guarantee that a used or damaged device retains its original protection.
What to check when buying used or refurbished
- Verify the handset. Ask for its exact model number and proof of purchase. Confirm warranty status and whether any protection plan can transfer or remain eligible; do not assume coverage follows the phone.
- Ask about its history. Request details of prior repairs, screen or hinge replacement, liquid exposure and impact damage. A repair history may matter to warranty eligibility and environmental protection.
- Inspect it in person if possible. Examine both screens and the inner film, and operate the hinge normally. Do not remove the film to inspect beneath it.
- Check service before paying. Contact the manufacturer or an authorized repairer with the model and your location. Confirm service availability and ask for estimates for inner-screen and hinge repairs. Repair options and parts availability can vary by location.
How to compare repair costs and protection plans
There is no single reliable repair price for “a foldable.” Cost depends on the model, fault, warranty status, region, service route and protection plan. Ask for separate estimates for inner-display damage, cover-display damage, hinge or frame damage, accidental damage and screen-film replacement where applicable. Also ask whether the service route repairs or replaces the phone, how long it may take and whether parts are available.

Warranty, accidental-damage coverage and repair fees are different. Motorola’s U.S. support guidance says its standard one-year limited warranty excludes broken screens and other physical damage; its MotoCare plans have separate terms and deductibles. Google says repair options depend on warranty and location, with estimates based on the device and reported damage. Warranty periods and exclusions can vary by country, so check the policy that applies where you live.
Plan figures are narrow examples, not general foldable repair prices. Motorola’s current U.S. support page describes deductibles of $5–$99 for its Extended Service Plan and $26–$99 for its Accident Protection Plan; the deductible depends on device and plan, and the estimate is shown during repair submission. Google’s U.S. Preferred Care listing states a $29 walk-in fee for eligible screen-only repairs to the listed Pixel Fold’s outer screen. Inner-screen damage follows other deductible or replacement terms. Confirm current terms for the exact device and plan.

Before enrolling in protection, check covered components, accidental-damage exclusions, deductibles or service fees, claim limits, repair-versus-replacement rules, enrollment window, authorized-service network and region. A plan’s marketing description is not a repair guarantee.

How to calculate the total cost of ownership
Compare the actual price in your market, not a historical launch price, and add the costs that could change what you pay over time:
- Current local price of the exact model.
- A compatible case, if you plan to use one. Confirm the precise generation and hinge fit; case compatibility varies by foldable.
- Protection-plan premium, plus the service fee or deductible for a likely claim.
- Quoted out-of-warranty repair costs for the inner screen and hinge, if available.
- Potential inconvenience: repair lead time, travel or shipping, and time without the phone.
For context, Samsung listed the Galaxy Z Fold7 at a U.S. starting price of $1,999.99 in its July 2025 launch announcement. That is a dated launch figure for one model, not a current price for every foldable or market. Check the current local price before comparing offers.
A practical model-by-model comparison

Compare manufacturer claims about redesigns or stronger display layers as descriptions of what changed, not independent evidence of long-term durability. Choose based on the handset’s condition, your tolerance for careful handling and the repair support available where you live.
