A low price alone does not show that a listing is a good deal—or that you can recover your money if something goes wrong.
Start with the seller, listing, and actual item
Check who is selling it
- Read recent seller feedback, but do not rely on star ratings alone. Search for complaints about the seller using contact details or business names shown in the listing.
- Confirm the marketplace’s refund process covers this seller and this type of item. Check how and when to open a claim.
- Ask questions through marketplace messaging and keep the answers. A written answer about condition, accessories, or faults is more useful than an informal promise.
Make sure the photos show the console being sold
Look for several clear views of the actual unit, including its ports, controls, labels, and accessories. Stock photos can illustrate a model, but they cannot confirm the seller has that particular console or establish its condition. If the photos are unclear or appear generic, ask for current photos before committing.

Confirm the exact platform and model, and whether the item is new, certified refurbished, used, or sold as-is. Check what is included—such as a controller, power cable, or other accessories—and look for disclosed damage, faults, or missing parts. Treat an unusually low price as a reason to investigate, not proof of a bargain. The available sources do not establish a current fair-price benchmark or a universal discount threshold that signals a scam.
Check whether a used console works—and can use its services
For a used console, ask the seller for a live demonstration or a recent video showing it powering on. Where relevant, ask to see it connect to the internet and access the platform’s services. A console that turns on may still have a faulty port, disc drive, controller connection, or restricted online access.

PlayStation-specific checks
PlayStation’s US buying guide suggests checking ports, buttons, the disc drive if the model has one, image quality, overheating, physical damage, warranty seals, and serial numbers. It also advises confirming the seller has deactivated the console and no longer has access to it. These are PlayStation-specific recommendations; they do not establish inspection steps for Xbox, Nintendo, or other systems. Separate returns, buyer protection, and warranty
These are different protections. A return window sets when and how you can send an item back; marketplace buyer protection may refund an eligible transaction under specified conditions; a product warranty covers certain defects under its own terms. Confirm each one for the exact listing, seller, console condition, and country.

- Marketplace protection: Check eligibility for this item and seller, the claim deadline, and any required checkout or payment method. eBay’s published Money Back Guarantee policy, for example, says it is not a product warranty and requires eligible checkout and payment on eBay.com; check the current policy and listing terms before buying.
- Warranty: Read the seller’s and manufacturer’s terms for the exact model and condition category. Do not assume a used or refurbished label includes manufacturer coverage.
PlayStation’s US buying guide recommends authorized retailers for new PlayStation products and says third-party used PlayStation products are not covered by warranty; the guide notes certified refurbished PlayStation products include warranty. This guidance is specific to PlayStation and the US guide, and should not be generalized to other brands, countries, sellers, or products. Pay in a way that preserves your options
Use the marketplace’s protected checkout rather than paying a seller directly. The FTC recommends safer payment methods such as credit cards or an online payment system with buyer protection. Do not pay by gift card, wire transfer, or cryptocurrency, and do not move payment off the marketplace: doing so may remove marketplace protections. Save the listing, receipt, tracking details, and seller messages in case you need to make a claim. Compare the real cost and value of shortlisted listings
Compare like with like: the same console model and configuration, condition category, included components, demonstrated functionality, and service access. Then weigh the total delivered price—not just the listing price—against seller reputation, warranty, return costs, deadlines, and whether marketplace protection actually covers the transaction.

Condition labels are not a substitute for the actual description: terms such as “refurbished,” “used,” “as is,” and “close-out” do not by themselves establish that a console is in top condition.
