Before booking a sale fare or room, compare the total cost for your exact dates and travelers, then check what the price includes and what it will cost to change or cancel. A low headline price can come with strict fare conditions, paid extras or hotel fees. The U.S. rules described here apply within their stated scope; check the seller’s current terms before paying.
How to compare sale prices fairly
Compare offers for the same itinerary or full hotel stay, dates and number of travelers. Include mandatory charges, then account for any optional services you genuinely need. For a package or travel offer, the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) advises checking the complete cost, including service charges, taxes and processing fees, before comparing alternatives.

In the United States, airfare advertisements by airlines and ticket agents must show the total price, including applicable government taxes and fees and mandatory carrier surcharges. The DOT’s ticket-buying guidance explains that optional services are separate; the airline must provide baggage-fee information through links on its website and near itinerary fare quotations.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor hotels, compare the total for the entire stay, not just the nightly rate. The FTC says certain mandatory or unavoidable fees must be included in displayed total prices. Its examples include required nightly resort fees and vacation-rental cleaning fees. Check whether any amount is still due at the property. See the FTC’s fee-rule FAQ.

What to check on a discounted flight
Fare type and restrictions
Read the terms for the exact fare before treating the discount as a bargain. DOT notes that discounted fares often have stricter rules: they may be nonrefundable, restrict baggage or exclude seat assignment. Fare classes can differ substantially, including whether the ticket is refundable and which amenities are included. Check the airline’s fare conditions for your itinerary rather than relying on the sale headline.
Baggage, seats and other extras
Look up fees for checked or carry-on bags, advance seat selection and any other service you expect to use. Common optional services include onboard meals or Wi-Fi, pet travel, priority check-in, travel insurance and unaccompanied-minor fees. Add only the extras you need when comparing totals.

For U.S. airline bookings, optional services cannot be preselected in a way that makes a customer opt out; the customer must affirmatively agree to pay. DOT’s 2024 rule announcement also says airlines and ticket agents must disclose baggage, change and cancellation policies before ticket purchase. See the DOT announcement on airline fee disclosures.
Who is selling the ticket
Confirm whether you are booking with the airline or through an online travel agency, travel agent or other third-party seller. The distinction matters if plans change: DOT’s 24-hour airline cancellation-or-hold requirement does not apply to tickets booked through those third parties. Check the intermediary’s own terms and identify who will handle the reservation or refund.

What to check on a discounted hotel
The total for the whole stay
Review the full price for your dates and room, including mandatory fees. Confirm whether a charge is collected during booking or remains due at the property so you can compare the actual cost with another offer.
The exact room’s cancellation terms
Hotel cancellation conditions vary by property, booking channel, room type and rate; there is no single cancellation rule established for every hotel booking by the cited federal guidance. Before paying, find the deadline to cancel, any penalty after that deadline, and the stated refund method. Do not assume every sale room is nonrefundable, or that an airline cancellation rule applies to a hotel reservation.

What the U.S. airline 24-hour rule does—and does not—cover
For an airline ticket purchased at least seven days before departure, DOT says the airline must either allow cancellation within 24 hours for a full refund without penalty or hold the reservation at the quoted price for 24 hours without payment. The airline need not offer both options. The requirement applies to qualifying airline bookings, not hotel stays or tickets purchased through an online travel agency, travel agent or other third-party agent. A third-party seller may have its own policy. Read the DOT’s ticket-buying guidance for the rule’s scope.
