Antimony has a documented role in lead-acid batteries, but it is not a general-purpose substitute for lithium, graphite, cobalt, nickel, or other materials used in different battery chemistries. The useful comparison is chemistry by chemistry: what each battery type uses, where antimony enters the supply chain, and what the available data can—and cannot—show.
What is antimony used for in batteries?
The clearest established battery use is in lead-acid batteries. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) identifies antimony as a material used in lead-acid batteries; it also has uses outside batteries, including flame retardants. In the battery supply chain, antimonial lead recovered from spent lead-acid batteries has historically been a source of secondary antimony.

This connection does not mean every lead-acid battery contains antimony in the same amount or form. The available sources establish the material’s use in the battery category, not a universal specification for individual products.

How does antimony compare with lithium, cobalt, or graphite?
These materials belong to different chemistry and material-role discussions, so they are not direct substitutes. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) lists antimony, lead, lithium, graphite, cobalt, nickel, manganese, and vanadium among materials associated with batteries and energy technologies. That broad list does not mean each appears in the same cell or performs the same function.

DOE defines a critical material as one with “a high risk of supply chain disruption” that “serves an essential function in one or more energy technologies.” That classification concerns supply risk and importance to energy technologies; it is not a battery-chemistry label or a performance ranking. Do lead-acid batteries contain antimony?
USGS names lead-acid batteries as an antimony use. The supply link is also visible after use: the USGS historical account describes secondary antimony produced mainly from antimonial lead recovered from spent lead-acid batteries. The sources cited here do not quantify how much antimony is present in a given battery or establish that all lead-acid batteries use antimony.

How much antimony is recycled?
A USGS historical supply account reports that recycling supplied about 18% of estimated U.S. antimony consumption in 2020; most of the remainder came from imports. This is a U.S. figure for 2020, not a current recycling share. The same account identifies antimonial lead recovered from spent lead-acid batteries as the main secondary source in the United States.
Recycling therefore connects battery use with secondary antimony supply, but the dated figure does not establish today’s share, current import dependence, or present trade origins. USGS: Focus areas for data acquisition for potential domestic resources of 13 critical minerals

Why is antimony considered a critical mineral?
USGS includes antimony on its 2025 List of Critical Minerals. The list is based on a supply-risk framework: USGS describes an economic model that evaluates potential effects of foreign trade disruption. The agency says its methodology considered more than 1,200 trade-disruption scenarios across more than 400 industries. Those figures describe the scope of the methodology, not the probability of a specific antimony shortage.
The 2025 list contains 60 minerals: all 50 from the 2022 list plus 10 additions. Being listed signals assessed supply-chain risk and economic importance under the agency’s framework. How large is lead-acid’s place in stationary storage?
A DOE 2023 assessment cites Global Market Insights’ estimates for 2022 stationary-storage market shares. These are dated market estimates, not current shares and not measures of antimony use.

What trade-offs can the evidence support?
The comparison is strongest on material association, supply context, and dated deployment estimates. The cited sources establish antimony’s lead-acid connection, a historical U.S. recycling contribution, a critical-mineral supply-risk classification, and a 2022 stationary-storage mix estimate. They do not provide a consistent head-to-head basis for ranking chemistries by cost, energy density, safety, environmental impact, or cycle life.
- Chemistry: Antimony is linked to lead-acid batteries in the cited USGS material; it should not be presented as a general replacement for lithium-ion materials.
- Supply: USGS critical-mineral status reflects a supply-risk framework, while the available recycling number is a dated U.S. estimate for 2020.
- Recycling: Spent lead-acid batteries are part of the documented secondary-antimony pathway, but the historical percentage should not be extrapolated to current supply.
- Market context: The stationary-storage shares are estimates for 2022 cited in a 2023 DOE assessment, not a current market report.
For current antimony production, import shares, trade origins, or prices, the figures cited here are insufficient. They also do not support a quantitative claim that antimony-based systems outperform lithium-ion or any other chemistry.
