A backup with strong rate stats may rarely play; a goalie who adds starts may also hurt your goals-against average (GAA) or save percentage (SV%). The right choice depends on your league settings and roster—not a single season statistic.
Start with your league settings
Open your league’s scoring and roster rules before comparing available goalies. Confirm whether the league uses categories or points, which goalie statistics count, how they are weighted, how many goalies can be started, and whether there is a minimum or maximum appearance rule. Common categories include wins, GAA, save percentage (SV%) and shutouts, but scoring varies by league. NHL.com’s fantasy hockey glossary explains common terms; your league’s settings determine what matters to your roster.

Why a minimum goalie appearance rule matters
A minimum can change whether protecting efficiency or chasing volume is the better strategy. Yahoo’s help page explains that without a minimum, a single shutout can automatically win or tie a manager’s GAA and SV% categories. Check the rule in your own league rather than assuming Yahoo’s setting applies elsewhere: Yahoo’s minimum goalie appearances help page.
Estimate the goalie’s role and workload
Assess whether the goalie is the established starter, part of a real tandem, a backup, or in an uncertain role. Use current team news and projected lineups; do not infer a lasting workload from name recognition or a handful of recent games. NHL.com defines a tandem as two goalies on one team and notes that rostering both can provide more starts, particularly in leagues that cap appearances. That approach still requires balancing volume against efficiency. NHL.com’s glossary entry on goalie tandems discusses that trade-off.

Match workload to your scoring format
More starts create more chances to earn wins and shutouts, while GAA and SV% measure efficiency. In a category league, a goalie who plays often may help volume categories but expose your team to weaker rate results. In a points league, apply your league’s actual point weights rather than assuming standard categories. NHL.com advises balancing start volume and efficiency against matchups in standard-category leagues. There is no universal SV%, GAA or start-share threshold that settles a waiver decision.
Check the scoring-period schedule and matchups
Look at the exact dates in your scoring period, the goalie’s team schedule and the quality of the opponents. A scheduled team game only helps if the goalie is likely to play it, so pair the calendar with an updated starter projection. NHL.com describes streaming as adding and dropping players to take advantage of favorable matchups or schedule openings; the strategy can demand frequent attention. Consider whether a short-term stream is worth the roster spot and any move limit it uses.

Compare available goalies before making a claim
When several goalies are available, assess them against one another and against the player you would drop. Interpret season and recent results alongside role and expected workload, not in isolation.

| What to compare | What to check |
|---|---|
| Expected starts | Whether the goalie is a confirmed or likely starter, shares a tandem, or has an uncertain backup role. |
| Scoring fit | How his likely contributions to wins, saves, shutouts, GAA or SV%—or your league’s custom point formula—fit your needs. |
| Team and matchups | The team’s context and the opponents scheduled during your actual scoring period. |
| Performance evidence | Season and recent results viewed with workload and role, rather than as proof of a stable new role. |
| Roster opportunity cost | The player you would drop, open goalie slots, transaction limits and lineup-lock timing. |
| Claim cost and timing | Waiver priority or budget, claim deadline and when the addition can count. |
Verify waiver rules and claim timing
Before spending priority or budget, check whether the goalie is a free agent or on waivers, how claims are ordered, the deadline, move limits and when an addition becomes eligible to count. These mechanics vary by league and platform. For example, CBS Sports’ 2026–27 free fantasy hockey rules describe one platform’s claim process and timing; they are not universal rules. Follow the settings and help pages for your own league.

No single waiver goalie is best without knowing your scoring rules, available players, roster needs and scoring-period dates. Prefer a likely workload that fills a real need in your format, then weigh the schedule and matchup against the risk to rate categories. If the role or start projection is uncertain, treat that uncertainty as part of the decision rather than assuming the goalie will play.
