Choose a Starter Kit if you and another beginner want to learn together, a ready-to-play Commander deck if your friends already play Commander, or the Foundations Beginner Box if you want guided lessons and structured first games. Play Boosters are best treated as an optional add-on for drafting or opening for fun, not as a complete first deck.
The right purchase depends less on card count than on how you will play your first few games. The recommendations below use Wizards of the Coast product descriptions and published US suggested prices available as of October 2026; store prices, stock, shipping and exact contents can differ.

What should I buy for my first Magic deck?
Use this decision rule:
- Learning with one other person: choose a Starter Kit. Wizards labels Starter Kits as products for learning and teaching Magic, and documented versions include two ready-to-play decks.
- Joining an established multiplayer group: choose a ready-to-play Commander deck, but confirm that the group actually plays the Commander format.
- Want lessons and highly structured practice: choose the Foundations Beginner Box.
- Want quick casual games by mixing themes: consider Jumpstart.
- Want cards to open or use in a planned draft: buy a Play Booster, understanding that it is not a complete deck.
- Want a larger card pool after you understand the basics: consider the Foundations Starter Collection.
A preconstructed product contains cards selected to work together immediately. A booster is a randomized pack. That distinction is the most important thing to understand before spending money on a first purchase.
Starter Kit or Commander deck: which fits your first game?
| Product | Best first use | What you receive | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starter Kit | Two people learning and playing together | Wizards positions it as a learning product. The documented FINAL FANTASY Starter Kit includes two ready-to-play 60-card decks, tokens and two deck boxes. | Contents, theme and any digital code vary by release. Codes cited for some kits work only in select regions. |
| Commander deck | A new player joining friends who already play multiplayer Commander | Foundations Commander decks are ready-to-play 100-card decks with tokens, a reference card and a deck box. | Commander has its own rules and social expectations. The box does not replace learning the basics, and it is unsuitable if your group plays another format. |
| Play Booster | Drafting or opening packs for entertainment | Wizards lists 14 cards in a Foundations Play Booster and describes Play Boosters as suitable for drafting or opening for fun. | Random contents do not form a dependable, playable deck by themselves. |
| Jumpstart | Fast casual games by combining themed packs | Two Jumpstart Boosters can be shuffled together. Each Foundations Jumpstart Booster contains 20 themed cards, including lands. | Check that you are buying Jumpstart, not an ordinary Play Booster; the products serve different purposes. |
| Beginner Box | Guided first lessons, especially with another learner | Ten predetermined beginner-oriented packs, how-to-play guides, playmats, reference cards and life counters. | Check language availability and the current price before buying. |
| Starter Collection | Expanding your card pool after learning the basics | Hundreds of cards, lands, three Play Boosters and a deck-building booklet. | It is a collection-building purchase rather than the simplest way to play a first game. Wizards describes it as English-only. |
Why a Starter Kit is usually the safest first purchase
A Starter Kit solves the biggest problem new players face: you need an opponent and two decks at the same time. Wizards’ product guide categorizes Starter Kits under “Learning how to play,” and the documented May 30, 2025 FINAL FANTASY version supplies two 60-card decks, tokens and two deck boxes. You can open the package and begin without sorting a large card pool or guessing which cards belong together.
#1 Best Overall
- EXPERIENCE FINAL FANTASY IN A WHOLE NEW WAY—Step into unforgettable stories from FINAL FANTASY games brought to your tabletop with the strategic gameplay of the Magic: The Gathering trading card game
- LEARN TO PLAY MAGIC—Everything you need to play your first games of Magic is here. Enter the fray with two pre-built 60-card decks and learn the essentials with the included guide booklet. You’ll be ready to play in no time.
- 2 FINAL FANTASY-THEMED DECKS—Cast powerful spells, meet iconic characters, and visit familiar locales; each deck contains 60 cards featuring FINAL FANTASY-themed art, including 10 cards entirely new to Magic (5 in each deck)
- ARE YOU A HERO OR A VILLAIN—Challenge a friend, choose your deck, and face off in epic 2-player battles; will you join Cloud, the beloved hero, or side with his nemesis, Sephiroth
- KICK OFF YOUR COLLECTION—Start your collection with Rare cards and shiny foils; each deck includes 5 Rare cards and 1 Mythic Rare Legendary Creature card with a shiny Traditional Foil treatment
What you can do straight out of the box
- Choose one of the two included decks for each player.
- Use the tokens and reference materials supplied with the particular kit.
- Shuffle each deck and decide who goes first according to the kit’s instructions.
- Play a short game while consulting the card text and rules references.
- Swap decks for a second game. Playing both sides shows how different strategies feel before you buy anything else.
The two-deck detail is documented for that FINAL FANTASY release, not guaranteed for every future Starter Kit. Check the exact set listing before purchase. Some versions may include a digital code, but availability can be limited to selected regions, so do not value a kit on the assumption that every code works everywhere.
When a Starter Kit is a poor fit
- You have no second player and want to join a regular multiplayer Commander night.
- Your friends already use Commander and expect 100-card decks.
- You specifically want to build for Standard competition rather than learn general play.
In those situations, match the product to the group’s format instead of buying the most beginner-labeled box.
When a ready-to-play Commander deck is the right answer
Commander is a multiplayer format, and Wizards describes Commander decks as products for multiplayer games. A Foundations Commander deck contains 100 cards, tokens, a reference card and a deck box. That makes it a practical entry point when friends already have a Commander group: you receive a complete deck intended for that format rather than trying to assemble one card at a time.
Ask your group these questions first
- Is Commander the format? A Commander deck is not automatically legal or appropriate for a Standard, Draft or other event.
- How strong are the other decks? Commander groups can range from relaxed introductory games to highly tuned lists. Ask what power level and budget the group expects.
- Are there house rules? Some groups use custom bans, preferred themes or rules for selecting a commander.
- Will someone teach you? A ready-to-play deck gives you cards that work together, but a first Commander game can involve several players, triggered abilities and unfamiliar interactions.
Wizards announced the Foundations Commander decks on September 18, 2026, with an October 2, 2026 release. Confirm the specific deck’s contents and release edition when shopping; “Commander deck” is a product category, not one single list of cards.

Are Magic booster packs good for beginners?
Usually not as the only purchase. Wizards describes a Play Booster as suitable for drafting or opening for fun. It contains randomized cards, so one pack cannot reliably provide the lands, creatures, removal and other card types needed for a coherent constructed deck.
Good reasons to buy a Play Booster
- You are attending a planned draft and need the packs specified by the organizer.
- You already own a playable deck and want the enjoyment of opening a random pack.
- You are adding a small, optional purchase after securing a Starter Kit or Commander deck.
Reasons not to start with boosters
- You want to play immediately with two complete decks.
- You have a fixed budget and cannot afford to buy replacement lands or many additional cards.
- You are trying to build a particular strategy without knowing which cards will appear.
Do not interpret a pack’s card count as a deck specification. A Play Booster is a pack of cards, not a finished 60-card or 100-card list.
Structured alternatives: Beginner Box and Jumpstart
Foundations Beginner Box
The Foundations Beginner Box is designed for guided first lessons. It contains 10 predetermined beginner-oriented packs, how-to-play guides, playmats, reference cards and life counters. Two packs are shuffled together for play, giving you a controlled way to learn without opening random cards and wondering how to combine them.
This is particularly useful when two new players want more instruction than a normal Starter Kit provides. Before buying, check that the box is available in a language you can comfortably use and that the current price is reasonable; availability and pricing vary by seller and region.

Foundations Jumpstart
Jumpstart is a quick-play format built around combining themed packs. Wizards says two Jumpstart Boosters can be shuffled together, and each Foundations Jumpstart Booster has 20 themed cards, including lands. The theme-based structure reduces deck-building decisions while still letting you discover different combinations.
Jumpstart is a better choice than ordinary Play Boosters when your priority is “open, combine and play.” Verify the label carefully because both products are sold as boosters but are not interchangeable.
When to buy the Foundations Starter Collection
The Foundations Starter Collection is for building a broad card pool after you understand the basics. Wizards describes it as containing hundreds of cards, lands, three Play Boosters and a deck-building booklet. That combination gives you more material for experimenting with multiple decks, but it does not provide the same immediate two-player experience as a Starter Kit.
Recommended Free Tools
Wizards’ announcement specifies that the Starter Collection is English-only. If you need another language, verify the product listing before ordering. The collection is also unnecessary if your immediate goal is simply to play one introductory game.

Published US prices and what they do—and do not—tell you
Wizards returned to listing suggested retail prices for most sealed products with Foundations. The following figures are official US suggested prices for the named Foundations products, published in 2024:
| Product | Published US suggested price | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Foundations Starter Collection | $59.99 | Manufacturer suggested price, published by Wizards in 2024; not a live retailer quote. |
| Foundations Play Booster | $6.99 | Manufacturer suggested price, published by Wizards in 2024; contents are randomized. |
| Foundations Commander Deck | $44.99 | Manufacturer suggested price for the named Foundations product, published by Wizards in 2024. |
| Starter Kit versions | Not stated universally | Price depends on the specific release; verify the exact listing, seller, shipping and total at checkout. |
Suggested prices are reference points, not promises about what a store charges in October 2026. Older products may be discounted, sold above suggested price when scarce or replaced by a newer themed release. Compare the exact product name and edition, not just a photograph or a generic “starter” label.
A practical buying process
- Identify your first opponent. One other beginner points toward a Starter Kit or Beginner Box; an established multiplayer group points toward Commander.
- Confirm the format. Ask whether the group plays normal introductory games, Commander, Jumpstart or another format.
- Choose a preconstructed product first. This gives you cards designed to function together and avoids the immediate complexity of deck construction.
- Check the exact edition. Read the listing for deck count, card count, included tokens, language, deck boxes and any regional digital-code restriction.
- Check the complete cost. Include shipping, taxes and any accessories. Several starter products already include deck boxes, so you may not need to buy one immediately.
- Play before upgrading. Use the supplied decks for several games. Note which colors, themes and play patterns you enjoy before buying singles, collections or additional packs.
Common first-purchase mistakes
Buying boosters instead of a deck
Random cards can be entertaining, but they do not guarantee a playable list. Start with a preconstructed product and add boosters only for drafting or enjoyment.
Buying Commander without a Commander group
A 100-card Commander deck is not the universal beginner deck. If your friends play one-on-one games with 60-card decks, a Starter Kit is more appropriate.
Best Value
- Includes a mix of AT LEAST 25 Rares/Uncommons which is half of the cards.
- Absolutely NO... Basic lands, Foreign, or silver/gold bordered cards.
- Some may contain Foils or Mythics but not all.
- Sets can range from Beta to the current Magic the Gathering set.
- Mint/Excellent condition only.
Assuming every Starter Kit has identical contents
Product themes and bundles change. The two 60-card decks documented for the FINAL FANTASY kit should not be treated as a promise about every release.
Confusing MSRP with today’s checkout price
Published suggested prices come from Wizards and may be outdated for a particular seller. Check stock, seller identity, shipping and the final total.
Overbuying accessories
Tokens, reference cards and deck boxes are bundled with several products. Play first, then decide whether sleeves, storage or other accessories solve a real problem.

Foundations cards are Standard-legal until at least 2029, except for select Commander-support cards included in the Starter Collection. This matters only if you specifically intend to play Standard. For casual kitchen-table games or Commander nights, format legality should be determined by the group or event organizer instead.
