Short answer: the 8BitDo Ultimate 2C Bluetooth Controller is the sensible budget alternative, the 8BitDo Ultimate 2 adds rear controls and deeper customization, and the 8BitDo Pro 3 is the most feature-rich all-rounder in this shortlist. If you already own Nintendo’s original Switch Pro Controller, try it before buying anything: Nintendo lists it as wirelessly compatible with Switch 2 for compatible games. For GameCube – Nintendo Classics, choose Nintendo’s Switch 2 GameCube Controller instead of a general-purpose pad.
There is no universal winner. Stick shape, D-pad feel, trigger preference and the games you play matter as much as the specification sheet. The comparison below separates confirmed compatibility from reviewer impressions and avoids pretending that a single controller suits every player.

Best budget alternative: 8BitDo Ultimate 2C Bluetooth Controller
The Ultimate 2C is the clearest choice when the goal is a capable replacement at the lower end of the market. 8BitDo’s product specification explicitly supports Nintendo Switch 2 from console system version 20.1.1, and it can connect by Bluetooth or wired USB. That minimum software version should be checked before you order; update the console if it is below the requirement.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What you get
- Hall Effect joysticks, designed to reduce the contact wear associated with conventional potentiometer sensors.
- Six-axis motion control for games that use aiming or motion gestures.
- Rumble and a turbo function.
- A manufacturer-stated 15 hours of play time.
- Bluetooth and USB wired modes, useful when wireless interference or charging is inconvenient.
What it leaves out
8BitDo’s comparison lists no pro back paddles for the Ultimate 2C. If you rely on extra rear inputs for shooters, action games or accessibility, move up to the Ultimate 2 or Pro 3. Do not buy the 2C expecting Nintendo-specific functions such as amiibo reading or guaranteed sleep-wake behavior; third-party support for those functions is not established here.
Who should buy it
Choose the Ultimate 2C for a second-player pad, a replacement for a worn controller, or a straightforward wireless controller for platformers, racing games and general play. Confirm that the listing says Ultimate 2C Bluetooth Controller and not a similarly named 8BitDo model, then confirm Switch 2 support and the 20.1.1 requirement.
Best feature-rich value: 8BitDo Ultimate 2 Bluetooth Controller
The Ultimate 2 targets players who want controls normally associated with more expensive gamepads. Its TMR joysticks are paired with a larger set of assignable inputs: two rear paddle buttons and L4/R4 extra bumpers. It also provides trigger-mode switching, Hall Effect triggers, motion control, turbo, vibration and support for 8BitDo’s Ultimate Software V2.

- Rear paddles let you keep your thumbs on the sticks while jumping, reloading or changing weapons.
- L4/R4 bumpers add another pair of reachable inputs for games with dense control schemes.
- Trigger modes can favor a short response for shooters or a longer range for driving and analog input.
- Software support allows button customization where the gamepad and software profile support it.
Important Switch 2 limitations
GamesRadar’s 2026 comparison describes the Ultimate 2 as a value alternative but reports two console-specific omissions: it cannot wake a Switch 2 from sleep and it lacks amiibo support. Those are GamesRadar’s editorial findings, not a universal claim about every firmware revision. If waking the console from the controller or scanning figures is central to your routine, retain a compatible Nintendo controller for those tasks or select a model whose support is explicitly documented.
The same review does not establish a permanent price. Treat any price shown by a retailer as a point-in-time regional offer, and check whether the listing includes the Switch 2-compatible firmware or requires an update.

- 5-in-1 USB-C Hub: Experience comprehensive connectivity featuring a Power Delivery input, two USB-A 2.0 ports, a USB-A 3.0 port, and an HDMI port. (Note: The USB-C power delivery input port is only for connecting an external wall charger to power your laptop and cannot power peripheral devices.)
- 90W Pass-Through Charging: Achieve optimal charging with 90W pass-through power to your laptop, supported by a total input of 100W, with the hub reserving 10W for operational efficiency. (Note: Wall charger not included.)
- Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.
- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Who should buy it
Buy the Ultimate 2 when rear inputs, TMR sticks and trigger choices are more valuable to you than Nintendo-specific conveniences. It is a strong middle tier for competitive action games, shooters and games that benefit from quick remapping, provided you accept the sleep-wake and amiibo limitations reported above.
Best all-round feature set: 8BitDo Pro 3 Bluetooth Gamepad
The Pro 3 is the broadest all-round option in this shortlist. 8BitDo lists Switch 1/2 support, Bluetooth for Switch, 2.4 GHz wireless for Switch and Windows, and wired connections across its listed systems. That makes it useful if one controller will move between a Switch 2 dock and a computer.
Controls and included hardware
- TMR sticks for the analog controls.
- Trigger locks for switching between a shorter click-like pull and a fuller analog range.
- Remappable rear or claw-grip buttons.
- Magnetic face buttons, allowing the installed layout to be changed where supported.
- A charging dock, so the controller can be stored and charged without repeatedly plugging in a cable.
TechRadar’s 2026 roundup selected the Pro 3 as its overall Switch 2 controller. Its review estimated around 20 hours of battery life and described the controls and dock as part of the appeal. Those are TechRadar’s review findings and estimate, not an independent test reported here; real battery life varies with wireless mode, rumble, lighting and battery age.
Trade-offs
The Pro 3 costs more than a basic pad in most markets, although a current cross-region price is not established. Its many controls can also be unnecessary for a player who mainly uses Nintendo’s first-party layout. Check the face-button arrangement, rear-button position and grip width against your hands before treating the feature count as a reason to buy.
Best option if you already own a controller: original Nintendo Switch Pro Controller
Before spending money, test the original Nintendo Switch Pro Controller you may already own. Nintendo’s compatibility information says it can pair wirelessly with Switch 2 and works with compatible games. This makes it the lowest-cost path when the controller is already in your drawer.

- Sleek 7-in-1 USB-C Hub: Features an HDMI port, two USB-A 3.0 ports, and a USB-C data port, each providing 5Gbps transfer speeds. It also includes a USB-C PD input port for charging up to 100W and dual SD and TF card slots, all in a compact design.
- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
What compatibility does—and does not—promise
Nintendo’s statement confirms wireless pairing and compatible-game support. It does not say that the original Pro Controller gains functions introduced for a newer Switch 2 Pro Controller. Do not assume extra buttons, new system shortcuts or other Switch 2-specific behavior simply because the controller connects.

When to keep it
- You already like its symmetrical sticks, full-size grip and standard Nintendo button layout.
- You mostly play games that do not require rear paddles or trigger locks.
- You want a dependable second controller without learning a new button arrangement.
If it fails to pair, charge it, update the console, remove an old wireless pairing if necessary, and repeat the console’s controller-pairing procedure. For a game that does not recognize an input, check that the title is among the compatible games Nintendo refers to rather than concluding that the hardware is defective.
Best specialized choice for GameCube – Nintendo Classics: Nintendo Switch 2 GameCube Controller
This controller is not a general replacement for every Switch 2 game. Nintendo designed it for the GameCube – Nintendo Classics collection, where its original-style layout and analog controls are the point.
Hardware and membership requirements
- Wireless operation with a built-in rechargeable battery charged through USB Type-C.
- A C button, Sync button, Home/Capture button and status LEDs.
- Nintendo says an NSO membership is required to purchase it.
- An Expansion Pack membership is required to access the GameCube collection.
Remapping and non-GameCube games
Nintendo says system-level button remapping is unavailable. Its support wording is: “It is not possible to remap the Nintendo GameCube controller buttons via System Settings, but you can remap the buttons for individual games within the Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classics game library.” That distinction matters if you need accessibility remapping or a different layout outside the collection.
Nintendo also warns that the controller may have issues with other games because it lacks inputs and features available on other Switch 2 controllers. Select it for the GameCube library, not as your only pad for a mixed collection of modern games.

Compatibility details to check before buying
1. Confirm the exact model and console support
Names such as “Ultimate 2,” “Ultimate 2C” and “Pro 3” refer to different products. Read the full model name on the retailer page and the manufacturer’s support page. The Ultimate 2C specification is explicit about Switch 2 support from system version 20.1.1; do not transfer that requirement automatically to another model.
2. Update the Switch 2 system
For the Ultimate 2C, bring the console to version 20.1.1 or newer before troubleshooting pairing. Firmware requirements and wireless behavior can change, so check the controller maker’s current update instructions immediately before use.
3. Choose wireless or USB deliberately
Bluetooth is convenient for normal play. A wired USB connection can avoid wireless congestion and keeps the controller powered, but it ties you to the dock or a suitable USB-C connection. If you use 2.4 GHz, confirm that the required receiver and connection mode are included for the platform you intend to use; the Pro 3’s 2.4 GHz listing is for Switch and Windows.
4. Separate console features from controller inputs
A controller can be fully playable without reproducing every Nintendo feature. Amiibo scanning, waking the console from sleep and specialized library support should be treated as separate requirements. GamesRadar specifically reports the Ultimate 2 lacks amiibo support and cannot wake Switch 2 from sleep; Nintendo positions the GameCube controller around its own Classics collection.

How to pair and troubleshoot a third-party controller
- Charge first. Connect the controller by USB and give it enough charge to complete an update or pairing attempt.
- Update the console. For the Ultimate 2C, verify Switch 2 system version 20.1.1 or newer.
- Select the controller’s intended mode. Use Bluetooth for wireless Switch 2 play or USB when you want a wired connection. On multi-platform models, ensure the switch or button is set to the Switch mode rather than Windows or another profile.
- Open the Switch 2 controller-pairing screen. Use the console’s Controllers menu and its option for changing grip/order, then put the gamepad into pairing mode with its Sync/Bluetooth control.
- Wait for the player indicator. Start a game only after the console shows the controller as connected.
- Test the functions you actually need. Check sticks, rumble, motion aiming, rear buttons and trigger modes in a low-stakes game. Do not infer amiibo or sleep-wake support from ordinary button input.
- Recover from a failed connection. Disconnect USB, power-cycle the controller, remove an obsolete pairing if the console has reached its remembered-device limit, and repeat pairing. If the issue remains, consult the exact model’s firmware instructions rather than applying an update intended for another 8BitDo controller.
Choosing by game and hand preference
Competitive shooters and action games
Prioritize rear paddles, additional bumpers and trigger locks. The Ultimate 2 supplies two rear paddles plus L4/R4; the Pro 3 offers remappable rear or claw-grip buttons and trigger locks. The Ultimate 2C is simpler and omits listed pro back paddles.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Racing and flight games
Look for triggers with an analog range and a grip that stays comfortable during long sessions. Trigger-mode switching can be useful when you alternate between gradual acceleration and quick digital inputs, but verify that the selected mode behaves as expected in each game.
Motion-controlled games
The Ultimate 2C lists six-axis motion control, while the Ultimate 2 lists motion control for Switch. Confirm that the title supports motion input and test calibration before a competitive match.
Retro and GameCube games
For GameCube – Nintendo Classics, Nintendo’s dedicated GameCube controller preserves the intended layout and offers in-library remapping. For broader retro collections, a general controller such as the Pro 3, Ultimate 2 or Ultimate 2C avoids the dedicated pad’s missing modern inputs.
Handheld play
Wireless controllers are options for tabletop or docked play. Nintendo says original Switch Joy-Con can pair wirelessly with Switch 2 but cannot attach to the Switch 2 console, so they do not replace built-in handheld controls. If you need controls physically attached to the console, verify accessory compatibility separately; the alternatives in this article are primarily wireless or wired pads.
Quick Recap
Common buying mistakes
- Buying by name alone: Ultimate 2 and Ultimate 2C are different products with different listed controls and compatibility details.
- Treating a review price as permanent: retailer prices, promotions, stock and regional variants change.
- Assuming every third-party pad wakes the console: GamesRadar reports that the Ultimate 2 cannot wake Switch 2 from sleep.
- Expecting amiibo support: the same GamesRadar comparison reports that the Ultimate 2 lacks it.
- Using the GameCube controller as a universal pad: Nintendo warns that missing features can cause issues outside the GameCube collection.
- Flashing the wrong firmware: match the updater to the exact model and confirm the Switch 2 requirement before updating.
- Ignoring ergonomics: extra buttons help only if you can reach them without changing your grip or pressing them accidentally.
Decision guide
- Already own the original Switch Pro Controller? Pair it first; Nintendo lists wireless compatibility for compatible games.
- Need the least expensive new option? Choose the Ultimate 2C after confirming system version 20.1.1 or newer.
- Want rear controls and trigger choices at a middle tier? Choose the Ultimate 2, while accepting the reported lack of amiibo support and sleep-wake.
- Want maximum customization or one pad for Switch and Windows? Consider the Pro 3’s TMR sticks, trigger locks, rear controls, magnetic face buttons and dock.
- Primarily play GameCube – Nintendo Classics? Buy Nintendo’s Switch 2 GameCube Controller, and check the NSO and Expansion Pack membership requirements.
