For a Survival cave trip, bring a pickaxe, torches or supplies to craft more, food, a weapon, suitable armor, wood, a water bucket, and inexpensive building blocks. The right quantities depend on how long you plan to explore and how far your character has progressed. Mark your route as you go so you can find your way back.
Essential items for a Minecraft cave trip
| Item | Why bring it | Practical guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Pickaxe | You need one to mine stone and ores and to clear a route through some terrain. | Bring at least one usable pickaxe. A spare can be worthwhile on a longer expedition, but there is no universal quantity. |
| Light | Torches illuminate dark areas, help you track where you have been, and make it easier to spot threats. | Carry torches or the wood, coal, and sticks needed to craft more. Plan ahead before descending into deep deepslate, where coal may be less available. |
| Food | Exploration and combat take time and use hunger. | Pack filling food for a trip that could run long. Cooked porkchop and cooked salmon are examples, not required choices. |
| Weapon | Hostile mobs may appear in dark cave areas. | Bring a weapon that suits your progress and ability to handle encounters. |
| Armor | Armor offers protection when you encounter hostile mobs. | Wear armor appropriate to your progress. The Minecraft Wiki cave tutorial recommends iron or better for cave exploration and warns that going unarmored is dangerous; this is guidance, not a strict requirement to enter a cave. |
| Wood or logs | Wood gives you a flexible base material for crafting useful supplies in the field. | Carry logs and craft intermediate materials when needed to conserve inventory space. |
| Water bucket | Water can help extinguish fire, manage some lava situations, and navigate vertical terrain. | Use it thoughtfully: water can help with a descent or climb, but it does not make lava safe. |
| Cheap blocks | Blocks such as dirt or cobblestone can help you bridge gaps, build upward, or reach ledges. | Take blocks you are willing to place or leave behind. |
This practical list follows the Minecraft Wiki’s cave exploration tutorial and mining guide. Minecraft.net’s beginner guide also describes lighting routes, mining ores, and dealing with enemies as core parts of cave play.

Optional gear for particular trips
These items can help, but they are not necessary for every cave visit:
- Shovel: Speeds up work through dirt and gravel.
- Bow or shield: Adds another option for handling combat.
- Compass: May help with navigation, but returning home depends on where world spawn is or whether the compass is linked to a lodestone.
- Signs or distinctive blocks: Can make important junctions easier to recognize alongside your main marker system.
Mark a route you can retrace
Caves branch and intersect, so settle on a marker convention before going far. One method described in the Minecraft Wiki cave tutorial is to place torches on your right as you head deeper. On the way back, keep the torches on your left. The side itself does not matter; using the same convention consistently does.

Light explored areas as you go. In a large or complicated cave, add signs or distinctive blocks at major junctions rather than relying on memory alone. There is no universally sufficient torch count: the amount you need depends on the cave, the length of the trip, and how much you craft underground.

For a short visit, prioritize the essentials and avoid filling your inventory with backups you may not use. For a longer expedition, extra light-making materials, food, or a spare pickaxe can reduce the chance of having to turn back early. What is practical also depends on your current gear and the cave you intend to explore; the sources do not establish a single exact loadout or quantity that suits every player.
