If a budget airline drops your route, compare the full cost of replacement trips—not just the lowest advertised fare. Search the same city pair first, then test nearby airports, different travel dates and times, and connecting flights. Add the baggage, seat and ground-transport costs you would actually pay, and weigh schedule reliability against price.
How should I compare replacement flights?
Make a like-for-like comparison for the same dates, number of passengers, direction of travel and baggage needs. Record the costs and practical trade-offs for each itinerary before choosing.

| What to compare | What to check |
|---|---|
| Ticket price | Current price for the same dates, passengers and direction of travel. |
| Add-ons | Charges for baggage, seat selection and any other services you need. |
| Airport access | Ground-transport cost and travel time to and from each airport. |
| Schedule | Departure and arrival times, flight frequency and whether a connection is workable. |
| Disruption recovery | The carrier’s stated options if a flight is delayed or canceled, and what practical alternatives exist. |
| Flexibility | Fare restrictions and the cost or consequences of changing plans. |
Historical averages can help put fares in context, but they are not current quotes. The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Domestic Airfare Consumer Report covers nearly 7,000 domestic city-pair markets across the contiguous 48 states. Its averages include taxes and airport fees, but exclude baggage, seat upgrades and change fees. DOT notes, “Because airline prices fluctuate constantly, these reported averages likely won’t match current ticket prices.” See DOT’s fare report and details.
Where should I search after a route disappears?
Start with the original city pair
Search the departure and arrival airports you originally planned to use. Compare the remaining nonstop flights with connecting itineraries on the same dates. A connection may have a lower fare, but account for the longer journey, layover time and the consequences of a missed connection.

Check nearby airports
Search airports within reasonable reach of both ends of your trip. A lower airfare may be outweighed by a longer or more expensive drive, train ride, shuttle or parking bill. Include the time required to reach the airport and get home at your arrival time.
Try other dates and departure times
If your plans allow it, compare nearby travel days and different departure times. DOT recommends considering alternate airports, routings, days and times when looking for fares. Its airfare guidance also advises checking what a low-cost fare includes rather than judging it by the base price alone.

Why the cheapest base fare may not be the cheapest trip
Compare what each fare includes with what you need to bring and choose. A fare that excludes a carry-on, checked bag or assigned seat can cost more after those options are added than a higher fare that includes them. Check the airline’s baggage rules and fees for your specific fare before paying. A luggage scale can help you check a bag’s weight at home, but it does not reduce the fare or guarantee that a bag will avoid fees.
When is a higher fare worth considering?
Price is only one part of the choice if you must arrive for an appointment or have little flexibility. DOT cautions that smaller airlines may have only one flight a day in some markets and may not reroute passengers onto another carrier after a cancellation or delay. Compare flight frequency and realistic recovery options alongside the ticket total; a more convenient schedule may matter more than a modest fare difference.

What if the airline cancels the route or your booked flight?
For covered U.S. flights, DOT says an airline must refund you if it cancels or significantly changes a flight and you do not accept alternative transportation or other compensation. Under the rule summary, refunds are due within seven business days for credit-card payments and 20 calendar days for other payment methods. This is not a general right to a refund for every voluntary cancellation. Check DOT’s rule summary for the U.S. rule and its scope.
If an airline has stopped operating or disrupted service, look for announcements from the airline and relevant authorities about temporary passenger assistance. On May 2, 2026, DOT announced that American, United, Delta, JetBlue, Southwest, Allegiant, Frontier, Avelo and Breeze had agreed to support passengers affected by Spirit’s end of operations in different ways. DOT described reduced fares on high-volume Spirit routes from American and Delta and a fare freeze on overlapping routes from Allegiant. Frontier announced systemwide rescue-fare discounts for Spirit customers that day. These were disruption-specific announcements, not a standing guarantee or a current fare quote; check the DOT announcement and Frontier announcement to see whether an offer remains available.
During a restructuring, route availability can change as an airline adjusts its network. Spirit’s restructuring resource described plans to reduce its presence in some markets and resize its fleet to fit profitable demand; it does not establish which routes are currently served. Confirm a flight directly with the airline before booking.
