What to Ask Cloud Providers About Data-Center Hardware Origin and Security

A practical checklist for evaluating where cloud data-center hardware comes from, how providers verify its integrity, and what evidence customers can request.

Ask a cloud provider to explain how it identifies, verifies, protects, tracks, and retires the hardware behind your service—and what evidence supports those claims. Supplier vetting is only one part of hardware provenance: controls also matter during manufacturing, shipment, installation, maintenance, and decommissioning. Treat public descriptions as statements of provider practice, not proof that every control applies to your particular service, region, or deployment.

Start by defining what your questions cover

“Hardware provenance” is more than the country where a server was assembled. It concerns who designed, manufactured, integrated, and tested components, how their identity is established, and whether they remain in an approved state through the asset lifecycle. Before comparing answers, name the cloud service and regions you are evaluating. Ask the provider to distinguish service-specific commitments from general descriptions of its data centers.

Cloud providers do not necessarily disclose every supplier or component detail. Ask what information they can provide for your service and region, what they withhold, and whether the limitation is contractual, security-related, or simply not tracked at that level.

Ask who supplies and builds the hardware

Trace the roles in the supply chain rather than asking only for a list of vendors. A component designer may differ from its manufacturer, integrator, or tester, and suppliers can themselves depend on other organizations.

  • Which organizations design, manufacture, integrate, and test the servers, boards, networking equipment, and other relevant components?
  • How does supplier due diligence address multiple tiers, and how often are suppliers reassessed?
  • What manufacturer, component, or country-of-origin details can the provider disclose for the service and region in scope?
  • How does it detect or respond to counterfeit, substituted, unauthorized, or unexpectedly modified parts?

Microsoft describes a complex, multi-tier supplier network and a risk-based approach to supply-chain integrity; Google says it vets component vendors and works with them to audit and validate component security properties. These are provider-published descriptions, not a substitute for confirming which controls apply to the service you are buying. Microsoft supply-chain integrity; Google infrastructure security design.

Trace custody from factory to data center

A genuine component can still be substituted or tampered with after it leaves a supplier. Ask for the custody path and the controls at each handoff, including assembly, transport, receipt, rack installation, maintenance, and return or retirement.

  • Which handoffs are recorded, and which include physical inspection, tamper checks, identity verification, or reconciliation against a signed manifest?
  • How are mismatches in a seal, device identity, manifest, or inspection result investigated?
  • Is equipment quarantined and kept out of production until a discrepancy is resolved?
  • How long are custody and inspection records retained, and can a customer or independent assessor review them?

Microsoft says suppliers follow chain-of-custody procedures and describes inbound and outbound inventory inspection and monitoring for firmware and component integrity. Its Azure hardware-provenance account also describes signed supplier manifests, checks during assembly, and checks when racks arrive after transport. Ask whether these controls cover your service and region, and what evidence the provider can share. Microsoft data-center asset management; Microsoft Azure hardware provenance.

Ask how machines and firmware are authenticated

Supplier and custody controls establish where equipment has been; machine identity and integrity checks help establish what equipment is running and whether its boot and firmware state is authorized. Ask how the provider defines an approved state and when it checks that state.

  • Does each production machine have a cryptographically protected identity tied to a hardware root of trust?
  • How are firmware and boot components measured or signed, and how are unauthorized changes detected?
  • Does the provider check attestation before a device enters production or receives credentials? How often are checks repeated afterward?
  • Can identities or keys be revoked if a machine is suspected of compromise?

Google describes unique server identities linked to hardware roots of trust and software state, along with verified boot and attestation. Its Titanium documentation explains hardware identity and firmware or configuration measurements used for authenticity and integrity checks. Microsoft describes Azure hardware-root-of-trust identities and cryptographic provenance verification. Confirm the deployment scope and operating details rather than assuming that a named technology covers every machine or service. Google infrastructure security design; Google Titanium; Microsoft Azure hardware provenance.

Find out what happens when a check fails

A control is only useful if the provider has a defined response to a failed or suspicious check. Ask for the operational path from detection to resolution, including how the provider prevents an affected device from continuing to serve workloads.

  • Who investigates the failure, and what conditions must be met before the machine can return to service?
  • Are relevant identities or keys revoked, and can affected hardware be replaced?
  • What records are retained, and under what circumstances would the provider notify customers?

Google says its automated systems can remove or repair machines that fail integrity checks. That statement does not establish the provider’s customer-notification terms or the response for every type of failure; ask for those specifics for the service you use. Google infrastructure security design.

Request assurance evidence with its boundaries

Ask for the current assurance package that applies to your service and locations, not just a general statement that the provider is audited. The report name alone is not enough to determine whether it covers hardware supply-chain controls.

  • Which independent reports cover the relevant service and facilities, and what are their reporting periods and geographic scope?
  • Do they expressly cover supplier controls, receiving inspections, boot integrity, and asset retirement? Which topics or locations are excluded?
  • Can you review reports under nondisclosure agreement, obtain a control mapping, or submit specific questions about exceptions?
  • Which controls are contractual or stated in service documentation, and which are descriptions of internal practice?

AWS states that it undergoes third-party audits and publishes data-center control descriptions. That general statement does not establish customer access to a particular report or whether a specific hardware supply-chain control is in its scope. Request the applicable material and verify the boundaries. AWS data-center controls.

Follow assets through maintenance and retirement

Ask how the provider keeps track of hardware after deployment, including who can service it and how storage media is handled at end of life.

  • How are assets uniquely inventoried across receipt, deployment, reassignment, maintenance, and decommissioning?
  • How are maintenance actions authorized, logged, and checked against asset ownership and status?
  • Which sanitization or destruction process applies to data-bearing media, how is completion verified, and what happens if sanitization fails?
  • What customer-accessible evidence is available about media disposition?

Google’s 2019 hardware-supply-chain post describes tracking equipment from acquisition through installation, retirement, and destruction, as well as controlled processes for retired drives. Treat that post as historical provider documentation and verify current practice. AWS describes centralized asset tracking and says data-bearing media is decommissioned using techniques detailed in NIST SP 800-88. Google hardware supply chain (2019); AWS data-center controls.

Compare provider answers consistently

Use the same service, region, and evidence standard for every provider. Record what the provider states, what it can document, and what remains unavailable; do not treat an unanswered question as proof that a control is absent.

Comparison area Record for each provider
Supplier transparency Supplier roles and tiers assessed; origin detail available for the service and region.
Chain of custody Lifecycle handoffs covered; inspection and identity records; mismatch handling.
Hardware identity Per-device identity approach; provisioning and revocation process.
Firmware and boot integrity Measurement or signature method; attestation gates or cadence; approved-state definition.
Failure response Isolation, investigation, repair or replacement, and customer-notification terms.
Assurance evidence Report name and period; service and regional scope; exclusions; access process; hardware-control coverage.
Lifecycle and recourse Inventory, maintenance, media disposition, contractual commitments, and escalation path.

Do not score a provider highly just because it names a root of trust, attestation system, or audit. Ask what the control covers, when it runs, who reviews exceptions, and what evidence you can inspect. Public descriptions vary in scope and age, so obtain current service-specific documentation or contractual commitments before relying on them.
