For a first try, set the air fryer 25°F below the oven recipe’s temperature and plan to cook for about 80% of its stated time. Treat both adjustments as starting points: check the food early and add time in short increments until it is done. Appliance models and recipes vary, so the result is not guaranteed by a formula.
Use this starting conversion
- Lower the temperature by 25°F. Start with the oven temperature in the recipe, then subtract 25°F for the air fryer. Whirlpool gives this as general air-frying and baking guidance: Whirlpool’s air-frying and baking guidance.
- Estimate 80% of the oven time. Multiply the recipe’s stated time by 0.8 to find when to make your first check. For example, 20 minutes multiplied by 0.8 is 16 minutes. That is a calculation from the rule of thumb, not a tested result for a particular food or appliance.
- Check early, then adjust. Look for the recipe’s expected browning and doneness before the estimated time is up. If needed, continue cooking in short increments and check again rather than assuming the calculated time will be exact.
- Follow your appliance’s directions. Check the air-fryer manual for model-specific instructions. The conversion is approximate, and manufacturer guidance notes that instructions can vary by model.
Why oven-to-air-fryer timing can differ
An air fryer moves heated air around food in a compact cooking space. Whirlpool says air-fryer baking tends to cook faster than conventional-oven baking, which is why its general conversion reduces both temperature and time. The actual result still depends on the recipe, batch size, appliance, and how the food is arranged.

Convection settings offer a useful point of comparison, not a guarantee. GE Appliances also gives a 25°F reduction as a general convection-baking adjustment: GE Appliances’ convection guidance. LG describes a similar 25°F reduction for certain convection modes: LG’s convection guidance. Those oven recommendations do not establish that a full-size convection oven and a countertop air fryer will cook the same food in the same way.

These are general distinctions, not performance guarantees for every model or recipe. Batch size and cooking space can change how well a recipe fits the appliance and how it cooks.

Do not use the time conversion alone to decide whether meat or poultry is safe to eat. Follow the package directions and current food-safety guidance, and consult your appliance manual for its instructions. No specific safe internal-temperature targets are established here, so use an appropriate food-safety authority for those figures.
