What the Windows Setup USB or IEEE 1394 Installation Error Means

The error is about the disk selected as the installation destination, not the USB drive used to boot Setup. Check the target disk first; if the internal drive is missing, investigate its model-specific storage driver.

This error means Windows Setup has identified the selected installation destination as a disk connected through USB or IEEE 1394 (FireWire). It does not mean you cannot boot the installer from a USB stick. The first thing to check is which disk you selected.

Why Windows Setup shows this message

Windows Setup distinguishes between the device it starts from and the disk where Windows will be installed. A USB flash drive can boot the installer normally, but if you select that USB drive—or another external USB or FireWire disk—as the destination, Setup may refuse to install Windows there.

Disk numbers and labels vary, so do not assume that a particular number is the internal drive. A Microsoft Q&A example illustrates the confusion: the user selected “Disk 1 Partition 0” and later clarified that it was the USB installer. See the discussion.

Check which of these two cases applies

What you see in Setup Likely issue What to do
The intended internal disk appears, but an external disk or the installer USB is selected. The wrong installation destination is selected. Return to the disk list and select the intended internal disk.
The intended internal disk does not appear in the list. Setup may not have the storage driver needed to detect the disk. Follow the model-specific storage-driver troubleshooting steps below.

If the internal disk appears, select it carefully

  1. At the Windows Setup disk-selection screen, inspect the listed disks. Use the labels and available details to identify the computer’s intended internal storage; do not rely on the disk number alone.
  2. If the selected disk is the USB installer or another external drive, select the intended internal disk instead. Do not format the installer USB to address this message.
  3. Before changing partitions, confirm the target and your data plan. Deleting or formatting partitions can erase data, and the available sources do not establish repartitioning as a fix for this port-related error.

If the internal disk is missing from the list

Treat a missing internal disk as a separate detection problem, rather than assuming the USB/IEEE 1394 message diagnoses it. Microsoft’s boot-start driver guidance explains that Setup may need a storage driver to locate a target disk or partition, and that a driver can be supplied during Setup.

  1. Identify the exact PC or motherboard model. Use its manufacturer’s support information to find the storage driver for that model and configuration.
  2. Load the appropriate driver at the disk-selection step if the manufacturer’s instructions call for it. Do not assume one driver applies to every PC.
  3. Check whether the drive is visible to the computer’s firmware and consult the manufacturer’s guidance. The error alone does not establish that the disk has failed.

Intel Rapid Storage Technology (RST) is one possible model-specific driver case mentioned in a Microsoft Q&A discussion, not a universal fix. See that example.

Why Windows To Go is not the standard fix

Windows To Go was a distinct, USB-bootable Windows workspace—not the ordinary installation process using a USB installer. Microsoft states that Windows To Go was removed in Windows 10, version 2004 and later. Its older documentation describes the former feature for Windows 10 Enterprise and Education. See Microsoft’s Windows To Go deployment documentation and Windows To Go FAQ.
