The Windows 11 desktop is the main workspace you see after signing in. It is more than its wallpaper or icons: it is the work area for apps, files, and tools, with the taskbar providing a separate, persistent way to launch and switch between apps and reach system controls.
What is the Windows 11 desktop?
Microsoft describes the desktop as the main workspace, or a workspace for apps, files, and tools. Its background and any icons are visible parts of that workspace, not the whole definition. You can use the desktop to keep shortcuts to items you access often, while open apps appear as windows you can work with and switch between.

The desktop is available after you sign in. Its appearance and contents can be customized, and Windows 11 lets you create additional virtual desktops to organize different groups of open apps.

How the desktop, Start, and taskbar differ
| Part | What it does |
|---|---|
| Desktop | The workspace for apps, files, tools, and optional shortcuts. |
| Start menu | Helps you find and launch apps and reach settings and files. It includes search, pinned apps, recommendations, an all-apps list, and account options; available sections can depend on configuration. |
| Taskbar | Provides access to Start, search, Task View, pinned or running apps, notifications, and system functions. You can use it to open apps or switch between them. |
Quick Settings is accessed from the taskbar area and offers controls for common functions such as network, sound, brightness, and accessibility. It is a control panel associated with the desktop experience, not the desktop itself.

What appears on the desktop?
Background
The background is the visual area behind desktop icons. You can personalize it; changing the background changes the desktop’s appearance, not its role as a workspace.
Icons and shortcuts
Desktop icons are optional shortcuts to apps, files, or folders. Windows includes Recycle Bin by default, and you can choose other standard icons in Desktop icon settings. To create a shortcut to a file or folder, open its context menu in File Explorer and choose Send to > Desktop (create shortcut).

To change icon size, right-click an empty area of the desktop and choose View, then select a size. To hide the icons, choose View > Show desktop icons; this hides the shortcuts from view without changing what the desktop is.
Taskbar and system controls
The taskbar sits along the desktop edge and brings together app access, window switching, notifications, and system controls. Its items and some layout choices can be customized. Start and taskbar options may vary as Windows 11 updates, so the labels available on your device can differ.

What are multiple desktops in Windows 11?
Multiple, or virtual, desktops are separate work areas you can use to organize different groups of open apps or content—for example, one for work and another for personal tasks. They are organizational spaces on the same PC, not separate physical monitors or computers.
Open Task View with Windows key + Tab to view and manage desktops. To add one, press Windows key + Ctrl + D. The taskbar and Start remain ways to access apps and controls as you move among work areas.

How to think about the desktop
- Workspace: the desktop is the overall work area, not just the wallpaper or its icons.
- Launcher: Start helps you find and open apps, settings, and files.
- Access and switching: the taskbar provides persistent access to apps and system functions, and helps you switch between open apps.
- Organization: virtual desktops let you separate groups of open apps into distinct work areas.
