Yes. The ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X runs Windows 11, and ASUS says Steam is pre-installed on the ROG Xbox Ally family. You can sign in to Steam, download games you own, and launch them. That does not guarantee every Steam game will work or perform well: compatibility depends on the individual game and its Windows, launcher, controller, and anti-cheat requirements.
Why the Ally X can run Steam games
The ROG Xbox Ally X is a Windows handheld, not a console limited to a separate Xbox-only library. ASUS identifies Windows 11 as its operating system and says it can access games that run on Windows. Steam’s Windows client can therefore be used on the device. ASUS’s ROG Xbox Ally X product page describes the platform, while its Steam and other game-store setup guide explains the installation flow.

The Ally X starts in a controller-oriented, full-screen Xbox experience, but Windows 11 remains underneath. ASUS says you can open Steam and install or launch games without leaving that interface. The Xbox experience is a front end; it does not replace Windows or turn Steam into an Xbox console library.

- From the Xbox full-screen interface, open Steam.
- If Steam prompts you to update its Windows client, allow the update to finish.
- Sign in to the Steam account that owns the game. If the sign-in window is hidden, use Task Switcher to find it.
- Open your Steam Library, choose a game, and download it.
- When installation finishes, launch the game from Steam. ASUS says installed games also appear in the Xbox app library.
These steps follow ASUS’s published instructions; they are not a report of independent testing on the Ally X.
Will a particular Steam game work?
The broad answer is yes for games compatible with the device’s Windows environment. The broader claim that every Steam game works is not established. ASUS’s platform-level statement does not amount to an individual compatibility check for every Steam listing, and it does not promise a specific frame rate or level of performance.

Those requirements can affect whether a game launches or is practical to play on a handheld. The ASUS sources cited here do not provide per-game compatibility verdicts.

Do you need a dock or more storage?
Storage for a larger library
Extra storage is optional, not a prerequisite for playing Steam games. ASUS says the Ally X uses an M.2 2280 drive with PCIe Gen4 speeds, so that is the form factor and interface to check if you plan to expand storage. Confirm the selected drive and installation details before buying or opening the device.

For ordinary Steam downloads and launches, ASUS says you can stay in the full-screen Xbox experience. For tasks such as managing files or working with mods, you may need the Windows desktop. ASUS’s Windows desktop guide for the ROG Xbox Ally and Ally X explains how to switch through Task Switcher and return to the Xbox experience from the Xbox app.
