What “App Store” means on iPhone
On an iPhone, “the App Store” can refer to the storefront app you open on the device or, more broadly, Apple’s app-distribution service. Apple’s App Store covers iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV, and Apple Watch, but the iPhone storefront is the place iPhone users browse to find and obtain apps. Apple describes the service as helping users discover, purchase, and download apps.

What you can do there
- Discover apps: Browse and search for apps available for iPhone.
- Download or purchase apps: Apps may be free or paid, and some offer purchases or subscriptions inside the app.
- Manage app-related purchases: The App Store supports in-app purchase categories including consumables, non-consumables, auto-renewable subscriptions, and non-renewing subscriptions. These are Apple’s documented categories, not a complete description of every way an app may earn revenue in every region. Apple outlines these business models and purchase types.
How apps get into the App Store
Developers use App Store Connect to upload submissions and manage app-related items. Apple reviews apps and other submissions under its technical, content, and design criteria. Depending on the submission, the review process can cover items such as updates, in-app purchases, and other app materials. Apple says the process is intended to support a safe and trusted experience; a review is not a guarantee that an app is bug-free, harmless, or right for every user. Is Apple’s App Store the only way to get iPhone apps?
Not everywhere. Apple documents alternative app-distribution and payment options in certain eligible regions. Depending on the region and applicable terms, options can include alternative marketplaces or distribution from a website, subject to Apple’s requirements such as validation and notarization. These routes are not available to every iPhone user worldwide and are not necessarily the same as installing through Apple’s App Store. Check Apple’s current distribution overview and developer license terms for applicable regional conditions.
