For India buyers, the Redmi 17 5G has the lower observed official-store price, a larger rated battery and microSD expansion. The vivo S2 5G has a sharper AMOLED display, a higher-resolution front camera and a slimmer, lighter published body. The right choice depends on which of those trade-offs matters more; the figures below are manufacturer-published specifications, not independent test results.
India price difference: Redmi is listed lower
On 2026-10-07, Xiaomi India listed the Redmi 17 5G with 6 GB RAM and 128 GB storage from ₹23,999. The vivo India E-Store listed the S2 with 8 GB RAM and 128 GB storage at ₹42,999, with an MRP of ₹66,999 shown on the page. That is an observed listed-price difference of ₹19,000, with vivo higher. These are different RAM variants and store prices, not a like-for-like offer or necessarily launch prices. Prices and stock can change; check the exact variant and checkout total before ordering.

Which has the better display?
On published resolution and panel type, the vivo S2 has the sharper display: its 2800 × 1260 AMOLED panel has substantially more pixels than the Redmi’s 1600 × 720 HD+ display. Both support refresh rates up to 120 Hz. The Redmi’s screen is slightly larger diagonally at 6.9 inches versus 6.83 inches, but size does not offset the resolution difference if fine detail is your priority.
Battery comparison: capacity favors Redmi
Xiaomi India rates the Redmi 17 5G battery at 7,900 mAh typical, compared with 7,050 mAh typical for the vivo S2. Redmi also lists 45 W charging versus vivo’s 44 W. These are capacity and input-rating comparisons: they do not establish screen-on time, day-to-day endurance or charging duration. Those depend on usage and conditions, and no independent results are established here.

Camera comparison: higher selfie resolution on vivo
The vivo S2 lists a 32 MP front camera, while Redmi lists an 8 MP front camera. That makes vivo the higher-resolution option on paper, not a proven better selfie camera: megapixels alone do not establish image quality. Both list a 50 MP main rear camera; vivo also specifies a 2 MP secondary camera, while Xiaomi describes an auxiliary lens. These figures do not establish which phone takes better photos or video.

Removable storage
Redmi’s India specifications list microSD expansion up to 2 TB; the card is sold separately. vivo does not list expandable ROM. If you plan to use a card, verify its compatibility with the exact phone variant and your intended use.

RAM and body
The Redmi India listing includes 6 GB and 8 GB RAM configurations, each with 128 GB storage. vivo lists 8 GB RAM with 128 GB or 256 GB storage. Check the selected variant at checkout: virtual or extended RAM is software-based and is not the same as physical RAM. vivo is slimmer and lighter on the manufacturers’ published figures, while Redmi is larger and heavier.
In-box charger
Xiaomi India says the Redmi box includes a charger, and the vivo E-Store lists a charger in the box. Confirm box contents for your exact regional SKU. Xiaomi’s global listing says no power adapter is included, illustrating why the India listing should not be generalized to other regions.

Which should you choose?
- Consider the Redmi 17 5G if the lower observed India store price, larger rated battery, microSD support or larger screen area matters most. Xiaomi India also lists IP64 protection and 45 W charging.
- Consider the vivo S2 if display detail and AMOLED, higher stated selfie-camera resolution, a lighter and slimmer body, or an 8 GB RAM configuration is more important to you.
This comparison is for India-market listings. Xiaomi Global specifies a different Redmi configuration, including a 7,500 mAh typical battery and 4 GB/6 GB RAM variants, rather than the India page’s 7,900 mAh battery and 6 GB/8 GB variants. Check the regional SKU, network bands, variant and software before ordering outside India.
