Its number is an estimate of your total calories burned for the day—not just calories from a workout—and it can increase while you are resting.
What does the flame icon mean?
A Fitbit moderator identified the flame icon on the Versa 2 home screen as the calories-burned statistic in a May 23, 2020 community reply. The reply addresses the Versa 2 specifically; it does not establish that every Fitbit model, clock face, or app version uses the same symbol. Read the Versa 2 community answer.

Why can the number rise when you are not exercising?
The display is a daily total. Fitbit says its calorie estimate combines basal metabolic rate (BMR)—the energy the body uses for essential functions at rest—with activity data. On devices that support and monitor heart rate, heart-rate data is also included. Since resting metabolism contributes to the total, the number can rise over the course of the day even when you are not working out. It is an estimate, not a direct measurement of energy expenditure. Google Health’s Fitbit help page explains the daily total and estimate.
What if the flame appears on a different Fitbit screen?
The documented identification here is for the Versa 2 home screen. If you see a flame on another tracker, a custom clock face, or in an app, its appearance or meaning may differ; the available sources do not establish a universal Fitbit icon glossary. Check the label or tile associated with the number, and identify the device and screen before assuming it is the same stat. Do not read this particular flame as a step streak or goal-completion badge: the Versa 2 answer identifies it as calories burned.

Why might the app instructions look different?
Google says the Fitbit app began transitioning to the Google Health app on May 19, 2026. As a result, help pages or instructions that say “Fitbit app” may not match current branding or navigation in every account or region. Google’s announcement describes the app transition.
