If your two-speed Ryobi drill has stayed in the same gear for every job, you may be missing a useful adjustment. On the PCL206B, 1 is the slower, higher-power range; 2 is the faster range. The best choice depends on the task, and other Ryobi models may use different speed ranges or guidance.
What do 1 and 2 mean on a Ryobi drill?
The small sliding selector chooses between two gearbox ranges. It is different from the numbered ring behind the chuck, which adjusts clutch torque for screw-driving.

| Selector | What it does on the PCL206B | Examples in the PCL206 manual |
|---|---|---|
| 1 (low) | Slower range; Ryobi lists 0–450 RPM for this model. | Higher-power, higher-torque work such as driving screws and drilling metal. |
| 2 (high) | Faster range; Ryobi lists 0–1,750 RPM for this model. | Faster drilling or driving, including drilling wood or masonry. |
These RPM figures are specifications for the RYOBI PCL206B, not universal figures for every Ryobi drill. The manual’s examples are guidance, not a substitute for choosing a suitable bit and considering the material and task.

Which gear should I use for screws or drilling?
For driving screws
Start with gear 1 when you want more control and torque. The PCL206 manual recommends low speed for applications needing higher power and torque, including screw-driving. Adjust the separate clutch ring to suit the screw and material; there is no single clutch number that is right for every job.
#1 Best Overall
- Powerful Performance: The WORKBLESS cordless drill kit delivers 354 inch-pounds (40 Nm) of maximum torque with 18+1 torque settings, and its powerful motor delivers consistent power on the job for drilling wood, metal, and screwing with precision.
- 2 Durable Batteries: Equipped with two 2,000 mAh lithium batteries to provide continuous power for the drill. With a charger, it's a solid and consistent power source for DIY enthusiasts who need reliable cordless performance.
- 2-Speed Flexibility: The drill is available in two speeds, low 0-480 RPM (for high-torque screwing) and high 0-1650 RPM (for fast drilling). 3/8-inch keyless chuck fits most drills for a variety of scenarios.
- Comfortable to Use: Lightweight, soft handle, and comfortable to use for long periods of time. Compact design and well-balanced weight make it easy to use. Equipped with an elastic flexible shaft to reach into tight spaces, the drill is flexible enough to handle a variety of hard-to-reach locations.
- Complete Set of Tools: Includes: 1x drill, 1x charger, 2x 21V battery, 6x drill bits, 10x screw bits, extension bar, and a magnetic flexible shaft, complete with accessories for a wide range of applications. Everything you need in one cordless drill kit!
For drilling
Gear 2 is the faster range and is listed for faster drilling, with wood and masonry given as examples in the PCL206 manual. Gear 1 is listed for drilling metal, where the manual calls for the higher-power, higher-torque range. The appropriate setting still depends on the bit, material, and your drill’s instructions. For drilling with the PCL206, use its drill setting rather than a numbered screw-clutch setting.
How is the gear selector different from the clutch ring?
The gear selector changes the drill’s speed range. The numbered clutch collar controls how much torque is applied while driving screws, helping match the tool to the screw and material. They do different jobs: changing gears alone does not prevent a screw from being overdriven. Ryobi lists the PCL206B with a two-speed gearbox and a separate 24-position clutch; check your own model’s markings and manual for its controls.

- Stens replacement parts have become a favorite among lawn and landscape professionals thanks to exceptional performance.
How to change gears without damaging the drill
- Release the trigger and let the drill stop completely.
- Slide the selector to 1 or 2. The PCL206 manual warns that shifting while the drill is running can seriously damage it.
- If the selector does not engage easily, do not force it. The PCL206 manual says to turn the chuck by hand until the gears engage, then try the selector again.
When drilling or driving screws, secure the workpiece with a vise or clamps, as the PCL206 manual advises.

Find the model number on the tool and use the matching manual or the Ryobi support guidance for drill-driver gear and settings. Its recommendations may resemble the PCL206’s, but speed ranges and instructions can vary between models and regions. Do not assume the PCL206B’s RPM figures apply to your drill.
