Moment Energy, a Canadian company, repurposes eligible retired or surplus electric-vehicle battery packs into stationary battery energy storage systems (BESS) for commercial and industrial sites. The “shipping containers packed with old EV batteries” image describes the containerized-storage concept, but available company materials do not establish that every Moment Energy system is housed in a standard shipping container.
What happens to EV batteries after they are no longer good enough for a car?
A pack can be unsuitable for vehicle duty yet still have useful capacity for stationary storage. Moment Energy evaluates packs for a second use rather than treating every retired battery as reusable. Its repurposing guidance describes an intake review, transport coordination, testing, and preparation for stationary use.

Which batteries does Moment Energy consider?
Moment Energy says it typically looks for intact, non-damaged, non-defective, non-recalled packs with their original battery-management system and connectors. Its published criteria include lithium-ion chemistries such as LFP, NMC, and NCA; original-equipment-manufacturer packs from passenger or commercial vehicles; and around 70% or greater state of health. These are the company’s intake criteria, not a universal industry threshold or a guarantee that an eligible pack will be accepted.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Inquiry and eligibility review: The company assesses the pack information and whether it fits its requirements.
- Transport coordination: If the pack is eligible, transport is arranged for intake.
- Intake testing: The company checks the battery before deciding whether it is suitable for second-life use.
- Preparation: Accepted packs are prepared for stationary storage applications.
What do Moment Energy’s systems do?
The company describes its Luna and Flora products as BESS for commercial and industrial applications. Rather than powering a car, a stationary system stores electricity for later use or helps a site manage its power needs. Moment Energy lists applications including backup power, reducing demand charges, microgrids, utilities, data centers, EV charging, and commercial facilities.
#1 Best Overall
- Controls high-voltage energy storage areas: Clearly identifies locations containing battery energy storage systems (BESS) where high voltage electrical hazards are present and restricted access is required.
- Improves hazard awareness: Bold DANGER header and clear warning message provide immediate recognition of high voltage energy storage equipment to prevent accidental entry.
- Designed for utility and solar installations: Ideal for battery containers, inverter stations, grid storage sites, solar farms, and electrical equipment yards.
- Built for demanding environments: Made from rust-resistant aluminum with UV-resistant printing for long-term outdoor and indoor durability in heat, rain, and harsh industrial conditions.
- Made by CGAP Safety: CGAP Safety is an American safety manufacturer producing durable, professional-grade facility and jobsite signage.
This is infrastructure equipment, not a consumer battery accessory. Whether a system suits a particular site depends on its power needs, installation, operating conditions, and project requirements.
Where have Moment Energy systems been deployed?
Moment Energy’s company history cites several projects, while its case-study materials report outcomes for specific installations. The examples below are company-reported, not independently verified measurements.
Rank #2
- 8V Deep-Cycle Flooded Battery – The Trojan T-875 delivers long runtime and consistent discharge performance for golf carts, renewable energy banks, marine systems, and industrial equipment.
- Flooded Lead-Acid Design – Built with Alpha Plus paste and thick lead plates for extended cycle life and deep discharge capability.
- Durable Polypropylene Case – The maroon housing is impact-resistant and designed to tolerate vibration and demanding use.
- Serviceable Wet-Cell Construction – Removable vent caps allow for standard watering and long-term maintenance.
- Ideal for Multi-Battery Systems – Commonly used in 48V golf cart banks, off-grid storage, commercial vehicles, and floor machines.
- Quadra Island: The company lists an off-grid project from 2021.
- God’s Pocket Resort: Moment Energy describes a Flora installation at the remote, off-grid resort near Port Hardy, British Columbia. Its case-study material reports a 66% reduction in diesel use; it does not provide an independent measurement method for that figure.
- TUGLIQ Energie: The company lists a June 2024 Flora deployment integrated with solar and wind for relocatable temporary camps under the Canadian Department of National Defence.
Are second-life EV batteries safe?
Safety depends on more than whether a pack once powered a vehicle. It involves selecting suitable batteries, monitoring and controlling them, designing the storage system, and meeting the requirements for the specific installation. Moment Energy describes protections that include battery-management monitoring, enclosures, shutdown logic, thermal and electrical safeguards, and UL 9540A fire testing. These descriptions come from the company; actual project suitability and permitting depend on local rules and site conditions.
What do the UL and Intertek announcements cover?
In an October 14, 2025 announcement, Moment Energy said its Luna system was the first repurposed-battery system to be tested through UL 1973, UL 9540, and UL 9540A. The wording matters: the announcement describes testing through those standards, not blanket certification of every product or installation.

- Holds up to 12 batteries on 3 sturdy shelves, supporting 300 lbs, for heavy-duty storage.
- Compact 34" x 10" x 32" design fits seamlessly into tight spaces while maximizing battery organization.
- Durable black powder-coated metal construction resists corrosion, built to last for years.
- Tool-free assembly with adjustable feet ensures stability on uneven surfaces for hassle-free setup.
- Perfect for mechanics and DIYers, offering space-saving storage that keeps batteries secure and accessible.
In a May 19, 2026 announcement, Moment Energy said Intertek listed its battery-management system as a recognized component to UL 1973 and that the BMS met hardware and software requirements under UL 60730-1 Annex H and UL 5500. That statement concerns the BMS component and the named requirements; it should not be read as a substitute for system- or site-specific approvals.

For a commercial project, the relevant questions are specific to the batteries, product, and installation. Moment Energy’s published claims are a starting point, not a substitute for reviewing project documents and applicable local requirements.
Rank #4
- Commercial Grade - Designed to accommodate a single group 4D battery, including automotive, marine, RV, and other commercial batteries.
- Rugged Design - Four corner fastening system and captive lid for easy installations, large cable entry holes for large gauge cables, full flow ventilation for releasing battery gases, and a battery acid reservoir.
- Designed for Rugged Environments - Impact-resistant down to minus 40 degrees Fahrenheit, withstands acid, gas, oil, and other contaminants, and immune to UV exposure.
- Keeps your Battery Safe - Limits water entry, effectively collects battery acid, allows adequate ventilation, and protects against accidental contact of battery terminals.
- Certified and Tested - Meets United States Coast Guard (USCG) Code of Federal Regulations 183.420 and American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC) E-10.7 specifications.
- For a battery supplier: Confirm that the pack’s condition, chemistry, state of health, original controls, and history meet the company’s current intake criteria before arranging transport.
- For a prospective site: Ask which product is proposed, what its configuration and operating limits are, and how it will be integrated with the site’s electrical equipment.
- For safety and approvals: Request documentation specifying the product, component, test, or certification covered, then establish what permits and approvals the installation requires.
- For economics: Compare like-for-like system scope, installation costs, operating assumptions, maintenance terms, and expected service life. The reviewed company materials do not establish an independent price or lifecycle ranking against new systems.
- For performance claims: Ask how a project’s reported savings or performance were measured and whether those results apply to the site being considered.
How long are the systems designed to last?
Moment Energy’s product FAQ says its systems are designed for 10+ years in commercial and industrial applications, depending on use. That is a company-stated design-life claim, not a guarantee for every installation; prospective customers should confirm the applicable warranty, maintenance requirements, and operating assumptions for a specific project.
