Astronomers interpret changes in starlight and a planet’s own infrared glow to infer atmospheric properties. What they can establish depends on the observation method, the planet–star system, and how clearly the signal can be separated from other effects.
How telescopes detect an atmosphere
A telescope records light from a star–planet system. Astronomers compare that light across wavelengths and over time, then interpret patterns that may have been produced by the planet’s atmosphere. A spectral feature is evidence for an interpretation, not a direct image of a gas molecule; clouds, haze, the host star, and data quality can all affect what the measurements mean.

What transit spectroscopy can reveal
When a planet passes in front of its star, some starlight travels through the atmosphere around the planet’s edge, or limb. Researchers compare the star’s light during the transit with light observed outside it. Atmospheric gases can absorb particular wavelengths, leaving patterns that can be compared with molecular absorption signatures to test which gases may be present. NASA explains this technique and examples of Webb’s atmospheric findings in its overview of Webb’s impact on exoplanet research.

Clouds and haze also affect the transmitted light. They can change or mute spectral features, making it harder to see signals from deeper layers. A spectrum therefore does not always provide a clear view of the atmosphere below the cloud or haze level.

What thermal observations add
Planets emit heat, including infrared light. Observing that emission—such as when a planet passes behind its star, or at different points in its orbit—can provide information that filtered starlight alone does not. Changes in the planet’s infrared signal across orbital phases can help constrain temperature and atmospheric structure, including temperature differences across the planet. NASA describes these approaches in its explanations of how Webb will study exoplanets and how Webb can seek atmospheres around potentially habitable worlds.
| Observation | Signal measured | What it can help constrain |
|---|---|---|
| Transit or transmission spectroscopy | Starlight filtered through the planet’s atmospheric limb | Possible atmospheric gases and aerosols such as clouds or haze |
| Thermal emission and orbital-phase observations | The planet’s own infrared emission, including changes over its orbit | Temperature and aspects of atmospheric structure, including variation across the planet |
What observed spectra have shown
Webb observations have provided clues to atmospheric chemistry and aerosols on particular planets. NASA reports sulfur dioxide associated with photochemistry in an exoplanet atmosphere. It has also reported evidence for clouds rich in crystalline silica on the hot gas giant WASP-17 b; the finding is described in NASA’s account of the observation. These are specific findings, not a template for what every exoplanet atmosphere contains.

Why a featureless spectrum can have several explanations
An absence of obvious spectral features does not by itself establish that a planet has no atmosphere. In a NASA Technical Reports Server record about a nearby Earth-sized exoplanet, a featureless transmission spectrum was reported as consistent with three alternatives: a high-altitude cloud deck, a tenuous atmosphere, or no appreciable atmosphere. These are possible interpretations of the result, not three separately confirmed states. The report is titled “A JWST Transmission Spectrum of A Nearby Earth-Sized Exoplanet”.

Atmospheric evidence does not automatically reveal a planet’s surface conditions, prove that it is habitable, or show that life exists. Searches for biosignatures on small, potentially habitable transiting planets face especially difficult measurement conditions: the signals can be small, observations may require substantial time, and the host star can contaminate or complicate the apparent signal. NASA discusses these challenges in its June 5, 2024 overview of reconnaissance of potentially habitable worlds with Webb. Any proposed biosignature needs careful evaluation and support from multiple lines of evidence; a single apparent atmospheric signal is not proof of life.

Why different planets yield different answers
Not every planet can be studied with every technique. The observable signal depends on the planet’s orbit, its contrast with its star, the properties of the target system, and the capabilities of the observing instrument. Transit spectra sample starlight passing through an atmospheric limb; thermal observations measure the planet’s emitted light. Each method answers different questions, and both can leave important uncertainties.
