How to Turn Off Copilot Keyboard Shortcuts in Windows 11

Use Windows Settings to change the action assigned to Win+C or a dedicated Copilot key. Available options vary, and Search may replace Copilot rather than disable the shortcut.

To stop Windows+C from opening Copilot, open Settings, search for Customize Copilot key, and choose a non-Copilot action if one is available. Windows does not offer the same choices on every PC, and choosing another action may redirect the shortcut rather than make it do nothing.

Change what Windows+ C does

  1. Press Windows+I to open Settings.

  2. Search Settings for Customize Copilot key. If you prefer to browse, Microsoft documents the path as Personalization > Text input > Customize Copilot key on keyboard.

  3. Select a non-Copilot action offered on your PC, such as Search. The available actions and defaults vary by configuration, so a literal Off option may not appear.

  4. Press Windows+C to check what the shortcut now does.

Microsoft lists Windows+C as a shortcut for opening Microsoft Copilot or Microsoft 365 Copilot. If Copilot is unavailable or disabled, the shortcut can instead open or close Windows Search. In other words, changing the assignment does not necessarily make the key combination inert. See Microsoft’s Keyboard shortcuts in Windows documentation.

Change a dedicated Copilot key

A physical Copilot key is a separate control from the Windows+C shortcut. For a keyboard with a dedicated Copilot key, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Keyboard > Customize Copilot key on keyboard, then choose an available alternative.

Check which physical key is being reassigned before changing it. Depending on the device, the Copilot key may replace Right Ctrl or the Context Menu key, and its implementation can vary by manufacturer, keyboard layout, firmware, and hardware design. Microsoft explains these differences in Understand updates to the Copilot key on Windows devices.

If Copilot still opens, check its app shortcut setting

If the Windows assignment does not stop the Copilot app from appearing, open Copilot and go to Account > Settings > Copilot Keyboard Shortcuts. Microsoft says this app setting controls whether the shortcut launches the full application or a smaller quick view. The in-app control is distinct from Windows’ key assignment; details are in Microsoft’s Getting started with Copilot on Windows.
