These checks can reveal public clues about a site’s CMS, framework, ecommerce platform, analytics, or infrastructure—but they cannot guarantee a complete view of its hidden backend.
What technology is this website built with?
First decide what you want to identify. “Technology” might mean a content management system (CMS), frontend framework, ecommerce platform, analytics service, or clues about hosting and infrastructure. A lookup tool can group findings into categories, but the categories it reports depend on the service.

For a quick first pass, enter the domain in Wappalyzer’s lookup or BuiltWith’s lookup. Both also offer browser extensions. Treat the result as a set of leads, not a definitive inventory: these services identify technologies from signals visible to them, and a site may not expose every part of its stack.

- Choose the scope. Decide whether you need a broad technology overview or a specific answer, such as which CMS or ecommerce platform a page appears to use.
- Run a lookup. Search the domain in a lookup service or use its browser extension. Note the exact domain and page you checked; a subdomain or a different page may use different systems.
- Record when you checked. Results can be cached or based on live analysis. Wappalyzer says cached lookup results have been verified within the last 30 days, while its live lookup is more up to date and consumes credits. Check its lookup page for current behavior.
- Inspect the page source. In your browser, open the page source and look for generator metadata, recognizable script or stylesheet URLs, asset paths, and embedded JavaScript variables. A generator tag may suggest a CMS, but a tag can be removed or left behind, so it is not proof by itself.
- Check network requests and headers. Open your browser’s developer tools, select the Network panel, and reload the page. Inspect the document and asset requests, then review response headers for clues. A missing header does not establish that a particular server technology is absent; the site may simply not expose it.
- Cross-check findings that matter. Compare the lookup result with the source and network evidence. You can consult a second lookup service for another observation, but if the results disagree, record the disagreement rather than choosing the longer list.
What the clues can—and cannot—show
| Clue | What it may indicate | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| HTML and metadata | A generator tag or platform-specific markup can point toward a CMS or platform. Wappalyzer’s guide illustrates a WordPress generator meta tag as one clue. | A single tag does not prove the site still uses that system; it may be missing, altered, or outdated. |
| Scripts, stylesheets, and asset paths | Resource URLs or recognizable names may reveal a frontend library, hosted platform, or integration. | A browser-delivered file alone does not establish what language or framework runs the server. |
| JavaScript variables and cookies | Browser-side values can expose fingerprints that automated detectors match to an application or service. | They reveal only what is exposed in the pages and session you inspected. |
| HTTP response headers | Headers can offer clues about a server or platform. | The absence of a particular header is not proof that the associated technology is not in use. |
| Lookup result | A service can quickly summarize technologies it recognizes from available signals. | It is not a guaranteed complete inventory, and a cached result may not reflect a recent change. |
Wappalyzer describes its detection signals in its guide to identifying website technology. The useful question is not just whether a detector names a product, but whether other visible clues support that finding.

| Method | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Online lookup | A quick result without installing anything. | Check whether the result is cached or live and which page or domain it covers. |
| Browser extension | Checking sites while browsing. | It is still an automated interpretation of exposed signals. |
| Source and Network inspection | Seeing the evidence behind a suspected technology. | It takes more effort and requires interpreting clues. |
| API or bulk lookup | Processing multiple domains or integrating lookup results into a workflow. | Wappalyzer documents API lookup as requiring a Business plan; check its API documentation for current access and credit rules. |
There is no head-to-head accuracy ranking established here, so choose based on the scope you need, whether the method supports one domain or bulk work, how fresh its results are, and what access it requires.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to judge confidence in a detection
Confidence is stronger when independent clues agree—for example, a lookup result accompanied by a matching asset path and a related response header. One clue is only a lead. If evidence conflicts, describe the technology as uncertain and state what did not match.
