What Students and Teachers Need to Know About STEM Competitions

STEM competitions range from research fairs to robotics and engineering design challenges. Learn how to compare formats, verify eligibility, and prepare.

STEM competitions are not one kind of activity: some ask students to conduct research, others center on team robotics or timed events, and engineering challenges may require proposals and design reviews. Match the format to the student, then check the current rules, pathway, local availability, adult support, and equipment before starting.

What STEM competitions can students enter?

These U.S.-based examples illustrate four different formats. They are not a complete directory, and eligibility, event availability, costs, and deadlines can vary by season and location.

Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) Conduct and present a research project. Advance through an affiliated fair; students cannot enter ISEF independently. Current annual rules, local fair pathway, review requirements, and project eligibility.
FIRST LEGO League Work as a team on season-specific robotics and STEM activities; the listed 2026–2027 Challenge editions include two-and-a-half-minute matches. Join a program edition and local event; age or grade bands and availability vary by region. Edition, age band, registration, local event, coach or facilitator needs, and current kit requirements.
Science Olympiad Compete in multiple science events as part of a team. Team qualification and tournament arrangements apply. Current policies and the local tournament’s event rules, qualification, and scoring.
NASA Student Launch Develop an engineering design proposal and progress through staged design reviews toward a launch. Middle- and high-school teams must qualify through American Rocketry Challenge or Rockets for Schools. Current handbook, proposal instructions, schedule, and team requirements.

For official program details, see Society for Science’s ISEF FAQ, FIRST LEGO League, Science Olympiad policies, and NASA Student Launch.

How do I choose the right format?

Start with what the student wants to do and can realistically sustain. A student curious about a question may prefer an investigation; a student who likes building and collaboration may gravitate toward robotics; a team that enjoys broad subject challenges may suit a multi-event program; and students interested in engineering processes may value a design challenge with formal reviews.

Prestige or selectivity alone does not make an event the best fit. Compare the work involved, available time, adult support, resources, access to a local event, and what participants are expected to present or demonstrate.

What should students and teachers verify before committing?

Use this checklist with the organizer and, where relevant, the local fair or tournament. A national program page may not settle local fees or availability.

How do I find a science fair near me?

For ISEF, students generally begin at a local school science fair and advance through competition levels to a Society for Science-affiliated fair. ISEF is a closed event: students cannot represent themselves there, and finalists qualify through the affiliated pathway. Affiliated fairs manage their own events while observing Society rules. Ask the school or local fair which fair serves the area and how its qualification process works; use the ISEF FAQ to understand the pathway, then confirm local dates and requirements with the fair itself.

How do I know whether a research project is eligible?

Do not assume a project qualifies based on a general overview. The current rules and the student’s affiliated fair determine the requirements. Society for Science publishes ISEF rules annually; its official rules page lists the 2027 rules booklet and modifications for the 2026–2027 cycle, along with guidance on AI use, forms, display, and safety. Consult the current documents at ISEF International Rules, not an old project guide.

The rules are intended to address student and participant welfare, regulatory compliance, safe laboratory practice, environmental protection, and eligibility. Before beginning work that may involve human participants, vertebrate animals, or potentially hazardous biological agents, ask the local fair’s Scientific Review Committee what review and approvals apply. Some projects require review before experimentation begins.

Do students need a teacher or coach?

Adult responsibilities differ by program. FIRST publishes coach and student resources, and its Traditional Challenge teams need two adult coaches; its Class Pack format uses one facilitator. The FIRST LEGO League get-started page lists training, guides, notebooks, and a Robot Game Rulebook. Research competitions may also require adult support for review, documentation, and safety procedures. Confirm the role with the particular program and local event rather than assuming a teacher is optional—or that every competition has the same staffing rule.

What equipment does a team need?

Choose the competition and edition before buying equipment. For 2026–2027, FIRST identifies LEGO Education SPIKE technology for the BIOGLOW Founders Edition Challenge and LEGO Education Computer Science & AI kits for the Future Edition. These requirements do not apply to every FIRST edition or to science fairs, Science Olympiad, or NASA Student Launch. Age band, registration, local events, and kit bundle affect what a team needs. Check the FIRST LEGO League program page and get-started guidance before purchasing; follow the relevant organizer’s equipment directions for any other event.

Where can I confirm current rules and local details?

Use the official program materials for the season in question, then ask the local event about details it controls. NASA’s Student Launch page links a 2027 handbook for the 2026–2027 challenge cycle, including rules, proposal guidance, and a timeline; NASA says participating teams complete the final competition launch in Huntsville. The NASA Student Launch Challenge page is the source for current challenge requirements. For Science Olympiad, use the policies page alongside the current event rules and local tournament information.
