What Still Works—and What Breaks—When You Turn Off Windows Indexing

Turning off Windows Search stops the index, not your files. File searches may be slower, Outlook offline search may be affected, and narrower indexing options can reduce scope with fewer trade-offs.

Turning off the Windows Search service can make searches slower and disrupt Outlook’s offline email search, but it does not delete your files or necessarily remove file search altogether. File Explorer can still search This PC with a slower, in-depth search. If your goal is to reduce indexing activity, narrowing which locations or file contents Windows indexes is less disruptive than stopping the service.

What the Windows Search index does

Windows builds an index by cataloging information about files, email, and other local content so searches can find matching terms faster. Depending on the settings, it can include file names and paths, metadata, and the text inside files. Microsoft describes the benefit this way: “When you search your PC after indexing, it looks at an index of terms to find results faster.” (Microsoft Support: Search indexing in Windows)

Disabling the Windows Search service stops the index from being maintained and used by apps that depend on it. That is different from deleting the indexed files: the service setting affects search behavior, not the files themselves.

What may change when the service is off

File Explorer and Windows file searches

Expect searches without indexed results to take longer. Microsoft describes searching from This PC in File Explorer as a “slow but in-depth search.” The exact speed and results depend on the search scope and configuration; disabling indexing does not necessarily eliminate file search. (Microsoft Support: Find your files and apps in Windows)

Outlook email search

Outlook uses the Windows index for offline email search. Microsoft warns that Outlook search features may be unavailable when the Windows Search service is not running or is not configured with an appropriate startup mode. The impact can vary by account type and Outlook experience, so this should not be read as a claim that every Outlook search behaves identically. Microsoft Edge address-bar history results

Microsoft lists browser-history results in the Edge address bar as an index use. The documented dependency concerns those history results; it does not establish that all address-bar suggestions or other Edge functions stop working. (Microsoft Support: Search indexing in Windows)

Copilot+ PC semantic indexing

Copilot+ PCs add semantic indexing alongside traditional indexing for specified document and image formats. Microsoft says semantic indexing is enabled by default and can be limited by location or file type. The available guidance does not establish every effect of stopping the entire Windows Search service across all Copilot+ PC models, so the consequences may depend on the device and Windows version. Reduce indexing without stopping the service

If you want to reduce indexing activity or scope, Windows provides narrower options. The right choice depends on whether you want to limit which files are indexed, whether their contents are searchable, or both.

Option What it changes Trade-off
Choose Classic instead of Enhanced Classic indexes common user folders by default; Enhanced covers the entire PC. Enhanced searches a broader area and can use more system resources. (Microsoft Support)
Exclude locations or file types Limits which folders or types of files Windows indexes. Searches will not use indexed information for excluded content. (Microsoft Support)
Index properties only for a file type Keeps file-name and property search while omitting full-text indexing of contents. Searching inside those files’ text will no longer be available through the index. (Microsoft Support)
Stop the Windows Search service Stops the index from being maintained and used by dependent apps. Searches may be slower, and Outlook’s offline search features may be unavailable.

Microsoft says initial indexing can take up to a couple of hours; this is an estimate, not a guaranteed duration. Its undated rule of thumb is that the index is less than 10 percent of the size of the indexed files, though it can be higher when there are many very small files or computer code. If Outlook search is already failing

Before treating a missing Outlook result as evidence that email is gone, check the search service and indexing configuration. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance covers the service state and startup type, whether Outlook is included among indexed locations, whether file contents are indexed where appropriate, and whether the catalog has finished building. Microsoft also documents rebuilding the search catalog as a troubleshooting step; it is not required simply because someone is considering disabling indexing.
