Playwright MCP can run browser automation, but the available documentation does not establish what /clear means or whether it clears a chat, a terminal screen, or anything else. It also does not show that the article’s author personally tested the command. The useful distinction is between an agent’s conversation context and the browser’s stored state: Playwright MCP documents ways to manage the latter, but that does not verify a reset command for the former.
What Playwright MCP does
Playwright describes Playwright MCP as a Model Context Protocol server that lets an MCP client interact with web pages through Playwright, including structured accessibility snapshots. Its documented tools cover browser navigation, forms, storage, tracing, video, and related automation tasks. These are documented capabilities, not evidence of a particular test result. What testing with Playwright MCP can change
Testing tools are opt-in
The testing capability is enabled separately. It provides test-oriented tools such as locator generation and assertions for checking whether an element or text is visible. Playwright’s documented testing workflow configuration enables both testing and storage. Testing tools and configuration

The storage capability provides tools for managing cookies, local storage, and session storage. That browser state is distinct from an agent’s chat context. Enabling storage tools may let a workflow inspect or manage browser storage; it does not show that a command named /clear resets either browser data or conversation history. Storage tools

Does /clear reset the same chat?
The cited sources do not verify /clear as a command, identify the application or interface where it might work, or establish what it clears. The title alone is not enough to determine whether it refers to an agent command, a terminal screen-clearing action, or a product-specific feature. Do not assume it deletes or preserves a chat, worktree, cookies, or browser profile.
In an OpenAI Developer Community reply dated September 7, 2026, a speaker identified as OpenAI_Support wrote that /compact summarizes context but does not guarantee a clean slate in the same chat, and that they had not verified a command that fully clears context while retaining that chat and worktree. This is a support reply, not a formal product specification, and it does not establish that /clear exists. OpenAI Developer Community reply

How browser state persists between Playwright MCP sessions
Playwright MCP documents two browser-state approaches. The choice affects whether browser state survives closing the browser, not what happens to a chat or worktree when a command is entered.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →| Approach | State after browser closes | Initial state |
|---|---|---|
| Persistent profile | Logged-in information is retained between sessions. | Use a persistent profile; the repository documents profile locations and how to select a user data directory. |
| Isolated context | Storage state is lost when the browser closes. | State can be supplied through configuration or a storage-state argument. |
These behaviors are documented in the Playwright MCP repository. They describe browser sessions, not an effect of /clear. Playwright MCP repository
Quick Recap
Best Value
How to verify a reset command safely
- Identify the interface. Record the product, version, and exact command location. A slash command in an agent interface and a command typed into a terminal are not interchangeable.
- Check current official documentation. Confirm that the specific product documents
/clearand describes what it clears. If the documentation does not define it, do not infer behavior from the name. - Separate the state you want to reset. Decide whether the goal is to clear visible terminal output, conversation context, browser cookies or storage, or a browser profile. These are different state layers.
- Check the browser configuration independently. For Playwright MCP, determine whether the workflow uses a persistent profile or an isolated context and whether it loads storage state. Do not use a chat command as a substitute for understanding that configuration.
- Verify the outcome before relying on it. Use the product’s documented checks for the relevant state. Avoid claiming that a chat, worktree, login, or browser profile was reset unless the product documentation or a direct, reproducible test establishes it.
