Valve’s reported Steam Frame hardware-reference release is useful for understanding how the headset is built, but it does not yet provide a verified public dimension sheet or a guarantee that a design will fit every face. Hackaday reported on October 10, 2026 that the release includes STEP models for the VR core module, head strap and controllers, along with controller tracking-LED locations, front-expansion-port documentation and KiCad and Altium reference designs. Those files can help makers plan mounts, covers and other add-ons. They cannot establish comfort, nose clearance, eye relief, pressure distribution or long-session fit without testing the finished hardware on a real headset.

What the Steam Frame CAD release reportedly contains

The publicly discussed material is broader than a single outer shell drawing. According to Hackaday’s October 10, 2026 report, Valve’s hardware-reference repository contains STEP models for three major mechanical groups:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • The VR core module, which is the central headset assembly a custom part might surround or attach to.
  • The head strap, including the geometry relevant to support and adjustment.
  • The controllers, including the locations of their infrared tracking LEDs.

The report also describes documentation for the front expansion port. That port exposes MIPI camera and PCI Express interfaces, so a designer considering a camera, sensor or compute-related attachment can account for the opening and its electrical interfaces rather than treating it as an unexplained mechanical slot. Reference designs in KiCad and Altium are reportedly included as well, giving electronics designers a starting point for board-level work.

The repository itself was not independently inspectable when these details were checked: its direct link returned an access-denied page. Therefore, the inventory above is attributed to the published report, not to a verified file-by-file audit. Exact dimensions, annotations, tolerances and reuse terms should be confirmed from the official files before fabrication or redistribution.

What each reported model is useful for

Reported material Useful design information What it does not prove
VR core-module STEP model Relative placement of housings, attachment surfaces and nearby obstacles for a bracket or shell That a proposed part will be comfortable, safe or manufacturer-certified
Head-strap STEP model Interface geometry for top support, rear support or strap-mounted accessories The adjustment range that fits every head or the pressure a strap creates
Controller STEP models and LED locations Clearance planning so an add-on does not cover infrared tracking emitters Reliable tracking after a design changes reflectivity, occlusion or balance
Front-port documentation Mechanical and electrical planning around the MIPI camera and PCI Express interfaces That an unapproved device will work electrically, thermally or through firmware
KiCad and Altium references A starting point for custom electronics and board layouts Complete production, safety or regulatory approval for a finished board

Which Steam Frame dimensions are actually established?

CAD can contain highly precise geometry, but the existence of a model is not the same as publication of a measured specification. No independently verified source in the available coverage supplies a table of the Steam Frame’s overall width, height, depth, face-to-lens distance, strap range or component tolerances.

Dimension or fit datum Status How to treat it
Overall headset width, height and depth Not stated in the accessible coverage Do not publish a millimetre value unless the official model is inspected and measured
Face-to-lens distance or eye relief Not stated Do not infer optical distance from an exterior contour
Nose opening and facial interface profile Not stated Validate on people or a representative facial-form fixture
Head-strap adjustment range Not stated Use the actual strap and adjustment hardware for confirmation
Controller tracking-LED positions Reported as documented Keep the listed emitter areas clear in an add-on design
Front expansion-port interfaces MIPI camera and PCI Express exposure reported Check the official drawings before making an electrical or mechanical commitment

If the official repository becomes accessible, a designer can use a STEP-capable CAD application to measure between defined faces, inspect section views and create a drawing with explicit datums. Those measurements should be labelled as measurements taken from a particular file revision, not as timeless consumer specifications. A revised model, a production variance or a separate regional edition could change the result.

Why CAD geometry cannot answer the whole fit question

A solid model describes hard surfaces. Fit depends on hard surfaces plus skin, hair, facial shape, eyewear, adjustment habits and the amount of time the headset is worn. A model can show that two parts intersect, but it cannot tell you whether a facial pad presses painfully against a cheekbone after an hour.

Comfort variables that geometry alone misses

  • Soft-tissue pressure: Foam compression and skin contact vary from person to person and change as materials warm and deform.
  • Nose and brow clearance: A contour that clears one nose or brow may touch another, even when the nominal shell dimensions match.
  • Eye relief and field of view: Lens position, facial interface compression and individual eye position affect the usable view; an external shell model cannot establish those optical outcomes.
  • Balance during movement: A rigid attachment can move the centre of mass or add leverage that is not obvious from a simple bounding-box comparison.
  • Heat, vents and controls: A part may fit mechanically yet block airflow, buttons, cameras or adjustment wheels.

PC Gamer’s September 14, 2026 review states a headset weight of 440 g and describes a front-and-back balance arrangement with the battery at the rear. The 440 g figure is the review’s published product specification, not a population study or a measurement that predicts comfort for every wearer. The reviewer’s comfort impressions should likewise be read as one hands-on account.

How makers can use the files without overclaiming compatibility

A disciplined workflow turns the reported models into useful design constraints while keeping claims proportional to the evidence.

  1. Obtain the official revision and its terms. Download the files from Valve’s hardware-reference repository when available, record the revision date and read the licence or reuse conditions. The licence was not independently verified in the accessible coverage, so do not assume that publishing a modified model or selling a printed part is permitted.
  2. Separate reference geometry from production geometry. Import the STEP files into a compatible CAD program and identify which faces represent real mounting surfaces, cosmetic surfaces, moving parts and clearance envelopes. Do not use a visually convenient exterior face as a datum without checking the design intent.
  3. Build a clearance envelope. Mark cameras, vents, controls, strap pivots and the documented controller infrared LEDs. Leave room for assembly, cable bend radius and manufacturing variation rather than designing to an exact zero-clearance contact.
  4. Check the interface before the shape. Decide whether the part attaches to the core module, strap, controller or expansion port. A perfect outer contour is irrelevant if the chosen fastener, clip or adhesive cannot carry the load without damaging the headset.
  5. Prototype in an inexpensive material. Use a low-cost print, foam mock-up or cardboard gauge to check reach, pressure points and control access. A prototype can reveal a comfort problem that a screen-based interference check cannot.
  6. Test tracking and operation. Move the controllers through their normal range, verify that LEDs and cameras remain visible, test charging and expansion connections, and check that no part obstructs vents or controls.
  7. Test on the actual headset and several users. Confirm fit with the production hardware, with and without glasses if relevant, and during both seated and moving use. Record pressure, slip, balance and heat separately; passing one check does not imply passing the others.

Practical comparison axes for an accessory

Axis Questions to answer
Mounting and interface Where does the part attach, what loads reach the headset, and can it be removed without marks or damage?
Sensor clearance Are controller infrared LEDs, cameras and other sensing surfaces unobstructed through the full range of motion?
Face and nose clearance Does the design avoid pressure on the nose, brow, cheeks and eyes for the intended users?
Strap adjustment Can the wearer still tighten, loosen and centre the strap after the accessory is installed?
Load distribution Does added mass pull the front or rear downward, increase leverage or cause the headset to slip?
Thermal and control access Are vents, buttons, ports, lenses and adjustment controls still usable?
Manufacturing tolerance Will prints, fasteners and material shrinkage preserve the intended clearance?

What Valve’s listed fit accessories can and cannot tell you

Valve lists fit-oriented items in its Ergonomic Accessories Kit, including a headset top strap and an extended light blocker. These products show the kinds of fit problems Valve expects some users to address: support at the top of the head and control of stray light around the face. Valve also lists custom virtual-reality lenses, which are relevant for users who need a prescription or tailored optical insert.

A listed accessory is an available design option, not a promise of individual comfort. It may improve support or light blocking for one wearer while changing pressure, balance or lens distance for another. Confirm the current product name, regional availability and compatibility on Valve’s own product page before ordering, because those details can change.

How to interpret the 440 g weight and rear battery balance

The 440 g figure gives a useful starting point for comparing the headset with another device, but mass alone is not a fit specification. Two headsets with the same mass can feel different if one places more weight far from the face or if the strap transfers force differently.

For a custom part, estimate not only its mass but also its distance from the headset’s support points. A lightweight extension at the front can create more leverage than a heavier part close to the rear strap. After installing a prototype, check whether the headset slides, whether the wearer tightens the strap more than before and whether pressure increases at a single contact area. Those observations are practical tests, not values that can be derived from the STEP file alone.

Common accessory-design failures and fixes

The part clears the shell but blocks tracking

Recheck the documented controller LED locations and the camera sightlines. Enlarge the opening, move the mount or change the material and surface finish if reflections or occlusion are introduced. Verify tracking with the controller at every normal angle.

The headset fits on a bench but hurts during use

Inspect pressure at the nose, brow and cheeks after a sustained session, not only during a quick hand check. Increase padding, distribute the load across a wider area or revise the strap attachment. Do not solve a pressure point solely by tightening another strap; that can increase total force.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The accessory causes front-heavy slip

Reduce the forward mass or move the attachment closer to the headset’s centre. If a counterweight is considered, test total mass, leverage and strap pressure together rather than assuming rear weight automatically improves comfort.

The model and printed part do not line up

Check the STEP revision, unit settings, printer shrinkage, hole compensation and whether the model represents a nominal rather than measured production part. Make a small gauge or test coupon before printing the complete accessory.

A port accessory works mechanically but not electrically

Confirm the MIPI camera or PCI Express requirements in the official electrical documentation, including connector orientation, power, signal integrity and firmware support. Mechanical access to the front port is not evidence that an arbitrary peripheral will function.

What the current evidence supports—and what it does not

The reported release supports a careful claim: Steam Frame CAD files can help designers inspect component relationships and plan attachments around the core module, strap and controllers. Documented LED positions add a concrete tracking-clearance constraint, while front-port and board references broaden the release beyond cosmetic shell design.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The evidence does not support publishing a definitive “Steam Frame dimensions” chart, promising that a printed accessory fits every wearer, or describing a model match as manufacturer-certified compatibility. No population-level fit statistic or independent anthropometric study was identified. Exact measurements and the repository’s licence remain items to verify directly from the official files.

Bottom line for readers deciding whether the files are useful

Use the CAD release as a design reference, not as a substitute for fitting. It can shorten the trial-and-error needed to locate mounts, preserve sensor clearance and plan around the expansion port. It cannot tell you whether a face pad seals comfortably, whether a strap will stay comfortable for hours or whether a modified headset will track reliably until the finished part is tested on real hardware.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the reported Steam Frame CAD release include an official overall-dimensions table?

Not in the accessible coverage. STEP models are reported, but overall width, height, depth, face-to-lens distance, strap range and tolerances were not independently verified.

Can I use a STEP model to prove that a custom face interface will fit me?

No. The model can identify hard-surface interference; personal fit still requires a prototype and testing because facial shape, padding compression, eye position and pressure are not represented as a universal standard.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is the 440 g figure a comfort measurement?

No. PC Gamer’s September 14, 2026 review states 440 g as the headset’s published weight. It should not be treated as a prediction of comfort or as a substitute for measuring an accessory’s added mass and leverage.
