El Niño shifts warm water and tropical rainfall eastward across the Pacific, changing atmospheric circulation and the odds of seasonal weather patterns far beyond the tropics. Some regions tend to become wetter, others drier, and temperatures can also shift. These are broad historical associations—not guarantees about what a particular town, storm season, or year will experience.

What El Niño is—and how it can affect distant weather

El Niño is the warm phase of the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO), a recurring climate pattern in the tropical Pacific. It develops through interaction between the ocean and atmosphere, rather than being simply a patch of unusually warm seawater. NOAA says El Niño occurs on average every two to seven years and typically lasts nine to 12 months. Those are broad averages, not a calendar or a promise that each event will have the same duration.

In typical conditions, trade winds help keep the tropical Pacific’s warm surface water toward the west. During El Niño, the trade winds weaken and warm water shifts east. More heat and moisture then rise over the central and eastern tropical Pacific, moving the main area of tropical rainfall. That change in where air rises and sinks alters circulation in the atmosphere.

Circulation changes can in turn influence the jet streams and the routes weather systems follow in the mid-latitudes. This is why an ocean-atmosphere pattern centered in the tropical Pacific can be associated with seasonal weather changes across the Americas, parts of Africa, Asia, Australia, and the United States. The connection is not a direct chain in which one warm patch dictates the weather everywhere: it changes the background odds, while season, location, event strength, and other climate influences also matter.

Put simply, the global effect is not that every place becomes warmer or wetter at once. The shifted tropical rainfall changes atmospheric circulation, and those circulation changes can favor different weather patterns in different parts of the world. The same event can therefore be associated with wetter conditions in one region and drier conditions elsewhere. Even within a region, the association can depend on the season being considered.

How NOAA identifies El Niño conditions

For U.S. operational purposes, NOAA’s criterion includes sea-surface temperatures in the Niño 3.4 region at least 0.5°C above normal for five consecutive overlapping three-month periods, together with an atmospheric response. That response includes weakened trade winds and an eastward shift in tropical rainfall. This is NOAA’s criterion for identifying conditions; it is not a complete account of every ENSO index or method used around the world.

The ocean-temperature threshold is only part of that criterion. The requirement for a corresponding atmospheric response reflects the fact that El Niño involves coupled ocean and atmosphere changes. A warm-water measurement alone does not capture the full pattern described by NOAA. The five periods are overlapping three-month averages, not five isolated months that must each independently meet the threshold.

Typical rainfall patterns vary by region and season

NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center summarizes typical associations using historical patterns. The table gives examples, not a deterministic forecast. A region listed as wetter or drier is not certain to have that outcome during every El Niño, and the stated season matters.

Season Typical wetter-than-normal areas Typical drier-than-normal areas
December–February Coastal Ecuador and northwestern Peru; southern Brazil and central Argentina; equatorial eastern Africa Northern South America, Central America, and southern Africa
June–August Central Chile and intermountain regions of the United States Eastern Australia
Seasonal tropical associations East-central and eastern Pacific rainfall increases Northern Australia, Indonesia, and the Philippines are typical drier areas in the tropics

The seasonal examples show why “El Niño makes a region wet” is too broad a summary. The pattern depends on both where a place is and which months are being considered. NOAA also identifies northern Australia, Indonesia, and the Philippines among the typical drier areas; the cited overview does not assign a season to those three examples in the same way it does for several of the regional patterns above.

For example, the December–February pattern includes wetter conditions along coastal Ecuador and northwestern Peru, but also drier conditions in northern South America and Central America. The broad regional label “South America” would conceal that contrast. In the June–August examples, central Chile and intermountain parts of the United States appear among the wetter areas, while eastern Australia appears among the drier ones. Comparing the same season across locations makes these contrasts easier to see.

These are rainfall tendencies, not statements about how much rain a place will receive, whether it will experience flooding or drought, or the timing of any particular event. The listed directions compare conditions with normal levels in the historical patterns. They do not provide a local rainfall total or a probability for a specific town.

Temperature patterns are not the same as rainfall patterns

El Niño composites also show temperature associations, and they do not simply mirror the wet and dry pattern. NOAA’s December–February examples of warmer-than-normal conditions include southeastern Asia, Japan, southern Alaska, western and central Canada, southeastern Brazil, and southeastern Australia. The U.S. Gulf Coast is listed among areas with cooler-than-normal conditions in that season.

For June–August, NOAA lists warmer-than-normal conditions along the west coast of South America and across southeastern Brazil. These examples should be read as seasonal tendencies in historical composites—not as a prediction of a specific temperature, heat event, or local record. A temperature association does not by itself establish whether a particular place will be wetter or drier at the same time.

When comparing a rainfall map with a temperature map, keep the variables separate. A location can have a typical association with warmer conditions without the cited pattern also establishing a rainfall outcome. Likewise, a wetter-than-normal association does not automatically mean cooler weather. The relevant comparison is between the same variable, region, and season, not between unrelated map categories.

What El Niño can mean for the United States

A strong El Niño can shift the Pacific jet stream and change winter storm tracks. NOAA describes a typical U.S. pattern of wetter and cooler-than-normal winter conditions across much of the southern United States, alongside warmer and drier conditions across parts of the northern tier and Great Lakes region. This is a broad regional pattern, not a city-by-city forecast, and the strength of a particular event changes the odds rather than deciding the outcome.

That distinction matters when using an El Niño map to make plans. A seasonal composite describes what has tended to happen across many cases; it does not say that every winter storm will follow a particular route or that every place within a shaded area will have the same conditions. A local forecast and the conditions unfolding during the season are more relevant to a specific decision than the global pattern alone.

It also helps to distinguish a seasonal climate signal from day-to-day weather. The broad association can indicate a shift in the odds of a seasonal pattern, but it cannot tell someone the exact dates of storms or the conditions on a particular day. For a decision tied to a specific place or event, the broad El Niño pattern is context, not a substitute for a forecast for that place and time.

Effects on Pacific and Atlantic hurricane formation

NOAA says El Niño’s warm water can fuel hurricanes in the central and eastern Pacific during summer, while El Niño conditions hinder hurricane formation in the Atlantic basin. This describes a change in formation likelihood, not a guarantee that one basin will have an active season or that another will be quiet. It also says nothing certain about the path, intensity, or landfall of an individual storm.

So the useful comparison is between basins and seasonal formation odds, not a prediction of a specific hurricane. A seasonal tendency cannot establish whether a storm will form, where it will travel, or whether it will affect a community. Individual storms and local impacts still require their own forecasts.

How to read an El Niño outlook without overinterpreting it

There are two different questions in a seasonal outlook: how likely El Niño conditions are to persist or strengthen, and what weather impacts may occur in a particular region. A forecast about the event itself does not automatically provide a local impact forecast. WMO explicitly cautioned that the strength of an El Niño does not translate directly into the magnitude of impacts in any region.

When checking an outlook, read its issue date and forecast period together with the probability. A number describes the forecast for the stated period; it is not an observed result. Also check whether the outlook is describing the climate event or a regional weather impact. Those are related questions, but they are not interchangeable.

The WMO forecast available in September 2026

In an update published 3 September 2026, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) reported that forecasts favored further strengthening and a very strong El Niño before a late-year peak. It gave nearly 100% likelihood that El Niño would persist through September–November 2026 and December 2026–February 2027. These were forecast probabilities and event-strength expectations as of that update, not verified outcomes or a local seasonal forecast. The percentage describes the forecast likelihood of persistence over the stated periods; it does not mean that any particular place had a nearly 100% chance of a specific weather impact.

Why an earlier probability may differ

WMO’s earlier update, published 2 June 2026, reported an 80% likelihood of El Niño during June–August 2026 and near or above 90% likelihood of continuation until at least November. As of mid-May, central-eastern equatorial Pacific sea-surface temperature anomalies were increasing. That earlier outlook is historical context; the September update is newer. Forecasts can change as observations and projections are updated, so the publication date and forecast period belong alongside any probability.

The two probabilities refer to different outlook periods and were issued on different dates. They should not be treated as competing measurements of the same period or as observations after the fact. For a current interpretation, the newer dated outlook is the relevant one in this sequence, while the earlier forecast provides context for how expectations changed.

What the patterns can—and cannot—tell you

El Niño can alter the odds of rainfall and temperature patterns that matter to agriculture, fisheries, ecosystems, and communities. Those connections are reasons to pay attention to seasonal climate information, not grounds to infer a single impact from the name of the climate phase alone. The evidence summarized here does not establish one global statistic that captures the total size of El Niño’s weather effects, nor does it support a quantified worldwide cost.

For a useful comparison between regions or maps, check four things before drawing a conclusion:

  • Season: Confirm whether the map refers to December–February or June–August; the listed patterns can differ by season.
  • Variable: Separate rainfall from temperature. A wetter-than-normal association does not automatically imply a cooler-than-normal one.
  • Direction: Note whether the source indicates wetter, drier, warmer, or cooler conditions, and exactly which region it covers.
  • Certainty and date: Distinguish a typical historical association from a dated forecast. For an outlook, check when it was issued and the period it covers.

These checks help prevent two common errors: treating a global pattern as a precise local prediction, and treating an event-strength forecast as if it measured the severity of regional weather impacts. The most defensible reading is narrower: El Niño changes the background climate probabilities, with outcomes that vary across locations and seasons.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no single global figure in the cited climate summaries that adds up El Niño’s effects across all regions, and the regional examples do not support assigning one worldwide cost. A careful account therefore distinguishes the ways patterns may shift from the consequences of a particular event, which depend on the location and conditions involved.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does El Niño affect weather around the world?

El Niño shifts tropical Pacific heat and rainfall eastward, changing atmospheric circulation and influencing the odds of seasonal weather patterns far from the Pacific. The effects differ by region and season: some places are typically wetter, some drier, and temperature patterns can shift too. These are associations, not guarantees for a particular place or event.

How often does El Niño happen, and how long does it last?

NOAA says El Niño occurs on average every two to seven years and typically lasts nine to 12 months. Those are broad averages, not a regular schedule or a guarantee that every event will last the same amount of time.

Does El Niño guarantee a wet or dry season where I live?

No. Historical composites describe typical associations and changed odds, not certain local outcomes. Region, season, event strength, and other climate influences matter. Use a local forecast for a specific place or event.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What did the WMO say about El Niño in its September 2026 outlook?

In an update published 3 September 2026, WMO reported that forecasts favored further strengthening and a very strong event before a late-year peak. It gave nearly 100% likelihood of persistence through September–November 2026 and December 2026–February 2027. That was a dated forecast about the climate event, not a verified outcome or a nearly certain local weather impact.

How does El Niño affect hurricane formation?

NOAA says El Niño’s warm water can fuel hurricanes in the central and eastern Pacific during summer, while El Niño conditions hinder hurricane formation in the Atlantic basin. This shifts formation likelihood; it does not determine whether an individual storm forms, its path, or its landfall.

The Bottom Line

El Niño shifts tropical Pacific rainfall and circulation, changing the odds of seasonal weather patterns around the world. Typical effects vary by region and season, and neither an event-strength forecast nor a historical pattern guarantees a specific local outcome.
