For software engineers working on AI in banking, the strongest skill set combines secure software engineering, cybersecurity, AI programming, data governance, model evaluation and risk awareness. Engineers also need to explain technical decisions to product, security, risk and compliance teams. This is a practical synthesis of financial-sector guidance and central-bank evidence—not a published ranking of bank-engineering skills or a universal hiring checklist.
Why bank AI engineering calls for more than AI programming
AI features in a bank depend on more than a model or application. They interact with sensitive information, existing technology, third-party services and decisions that can carry significant consequences. The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) identifies governance, staff expertise, model risk management, data governance and third-party AI providers as areas of financial-sector attention in its 2024 review of banking and insurance. That context makes foundational engineering skills—clear system boundaries, secure interfaces, robust testing and maintainable integrations—part of responsible AI delivery. The right emphasis depends on the system’s purpose, data and impact; the sources do not establish one fixed skill ranking for every bank or engineering role.

Skills to prioritize
Cybersecurity and secure software engineering
Build security into design, implementation and operations rather than treating it as a final review. Engineers working with AI need to understand how information moves through the application and its dependencies, protect sensitive data, and recognize that an external AI service can introduce confidentiality and third-party risks. A BIS survey of major central-bank cybersecurity experts points to expected investment in human capital, particularly expertise that combines cybersecurity and AI programming. It is evidence about central-bank experts’ expectations, not a survey of bank software-engineer hiring. BIS Paper 145, 2024
#1 Best Overall
AI programming and practical evaluation
Know how to integrate AI capabilities into software and how to assess their behavior in the intended use. Generative AI can produce plausible but inaccurate outputs, and results may vary. Engineers should therefore test relevant failure cases, define acceptable behavior and make appropriate checks part of the delivery process. The required depth of evaluation depends on the model’s role and the consequences of an error; no single evaluation method applies to every banking use case. A 2025 BIS speech discusses inaccurate generative AI outputs as an engineering, product-design and risk-management challenge. BIS speech, 2025
Data governance and data quality
Treat data access, quality, confidentiality and management as engineering concerns. AI systems depend on data that is usable and appropriately controlled; siloed or poorly prepared data can make implementation harder. Engineers need to understand where data comes from, how it is handled by the system and its dependencies, and which governance constraints shape its use. BIS financial-sector work highlights data governance and management, while its 2025 speech discusses data silos as a challenge. BIS, 2024 BIS speech, 2025
Rank #2
Model-risk awareness and human oversight
Engineering choices should reflect how an AI output will be used, what can go wrong and who can review or intervene. The BIS review identifies model risk management as a financial-sector governance concern. Its central-bank cybersecurity survey also describes AI as both automating some tasks and supporting human experts in others, including model oversight. This suggests that engineers should design systems with review and oversight needs in mind, rather than assume that automation removes human responsibility. BIS, 2024 BIS Paper 145, 2024

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsAwareness of legal, regulatory and third-party concerns
Engineers do not need to replace legal or compliance specialists, but they should recognize when implementation choices raise issues for them. In a 2024 speech, Federal Reserve Governor Michelle W. Bowman said AI use remains subject to existing legal and regulatory requirements, including fair lending, cybersecurity, data privacy, third-party risk management and copyright. Which requirements matter depends on the deployment and jurisdiction; the list is not exhaustive, and each item does not apply identically to every system. Federal Reserve, 2024
Communication across disciplines
Explain system behavior, dependencies, safeguards and known limitations in terms that product, security, risk and compliance colleagues can use. This is a practical implication of the governance issues identified across the sources: AI risks can involve the model, data, technology and external providers at once. Clear communication helps teams make decisions about those connected concerns before deployment and during oversight.
How to decide what to learn first
Start with the responsibilities of the system you expect to build, not a generic list of AI technologies. These questions are a practical way to prioritize learning; they are not a published BIS scoring framework.
- Security and confidentiality: Does the system handle sensitive information or send data to an external provider?
- Data: Are the sources reliable, appropriately governed and accessible for the intended use?
- Model behavior: Could inaccurate or variable output cause harm, and how will it be evaluated?
- Dependencies: Does delivery rely on third parties, legacy technology or data that is separated across systems?
- Consequences and review: What happens if the system is wrong, and what kind of human oversight is needed?
Use the answers to identify the largest engineering and governance risks, then build the relevant skills in partnership with specialists. A system that handles confidential data may call for deeper security and data-governance work; one whose outputs influence consequential decisions may need particular attention to evaluation, model risk and oversight. The sources establish these as relevant concerns, not as a universal ordering among them.

The evidence supports growing attention to expertise that combines cybersecurity and AI programming, as well as to governance, data, model risk and third-party dependencies. It does not establish comparative hiring demand by country, bank size or seniority, nor does it predict a settled employment outcome for software engineers. The BIS survey describes automation and human support as coexisting possibilities, including work overseeing AI models; it should not be read as a forecast that engineering roles will disappear or grow by a specific amount.
