What Skills and Experience Do Crypto Employers Look For?

Crypto employers hire across engineering, product, compliance, operations, finance, marketing, and support. Learn how requirements vary and how to prove relevant experience.

Crypto employers look for skills that fit the job—not one universal “crypto” checklist. Engineering roles may ask for Solidity, Python, Rust, or Go alongside production software skills; employers also hire for product, compliance, operations, finance, marketing, and customer support. Relevant work and clear evidence of what you contributed can matter more than a particular degree or a blanket number of years in crypto.

Crypto jobs cover more than software development

There is no single profile shared by all crypto employers. A blockchain engineer may build protocols or applications; a compliance specialist may interpret regulations and improve controls; a product manager may shape a payments feature; and an operations or support employee may keep services running and help customers.

The available job-market snapshots illustrate why scope matters. Bitvocation counted 1,801 Bitcoin-specific listings in 2025, of which 74% were nondeveloper roles. Product Manager, Executive Assistant, and Marketing Manager were among its leading nondeveloper titles; software, frontend, and full-stack engineers featured among developer titles. The listings also covered operations, finance, legal, sales, public relations, HR, design, mining, and customer service. This is evidence about Bitcoin jobs, not a census of all crypto or Web3 hiring. Bitvocation’s 2025 report also says, “You don’t need to be a developer to build a career in Bitcoin.”

A separate snapshot summarized by CoinGecko reports 2,932 active postings in Tiger Research’s H1 2026 analysis, with engineering at 34.1% and compliance/legal at 10.4%. It tracked job boards, employer career pages, and Korean platforms, so it is not directly comparable with Bitvocation’s Bitcoin-only listings. Cryptogrind’s August 2026 sample of roles at 56 companies included security, AI and machine learning, operations, marketing, compliance, DeFi, development, smart contracts, research, and design; the publisher notes that its sample leans toward larger exchanges and infrastructure firms. These sources show varied hiring, not a single industry-wide ranking.

Which skills matter for each role?

Blockchain engineering

For US Blockchain Engineer postings from January 1 through December 31, 2025, O*NET’s Lightcast-linked table reports the share of unique postings mentioning each software skill. Solidity appeared in 30%, Python in 24%, Rust in 21%, and Go in 17%. Docker and AWS each appeared in 15%; Node.js and JavaScript each in 13%; Java and Kubernetes each in 12%; TypeScript and SQL each in 11%. PostgreSQL, React, Git, C++, MongoDB, REST APIs, and C# also appeared. These are frequencies within a specific occupation and US posting dataset—not a list every developer must know. See O*NET’s Blockchain Engineer profile and posting data.

The practical signal is breadth: some jobs require a programming language, while others also emphasize infrastructure, databases, APIs, or frontend work. Read the responsibilities and required skills in the specific vacancy instead of trying to learn every language in the table.

Product, business, and cross-functional work

CHAISE’s 2023 analysis of blockchain job ads identifies work such as blockchain solution design, decentralized applications, data analysis, smart contracts, frontend and backend development, cryptography, and protocol engineering. It also finds business capabilities including use-case development, product management, and product development. The work can therefore involve understanding why a system is being built and how it will be used—not only implementing code.

CHAISE also identifies teamwork and emotional intelligence, systems and networked thinking, problem-solving, communication, self-management, and self-responsibility. These capabilities are relevant across roles where people must coordinate technical, commercial, and operational decisions. Its findings describe analyzed ads, rather than a universal competency standard. The European Blockchain Skills Strategy, published March 23, 2022, provides skills-framework and training context; it is not a current count of vacancies.

Nonengineering roles

Requirements depend on the work. A compliance or legal role may call for relevant regulatory or risk experience; finance roles may value accounting or financial operations; marketing roles may look for campaign, content, or community work; support roles may prioritize customer communication and troubleshooting; product and operations roles may require evidence of shipping improvements or coordinating teams. These are ways to match prior experience to a vacancy, not claims that every employer uses the same criteria.

How much experience or education is required?

Requirements vary by vacancy and seniority. In CHAISE’s 2023 analysis, 56% of blockchain-related ads required up to three years of experience or no previous experience; 35% required at least three years, and 9% at least five years. About 65% either did not state a minimum education requirement or said no formal degree was required. These figures describe the ads CHAISE analyzed in 2023, not a guarantee for a current role or market.

Prior crypto employment is not the only potentially relevant experience. Work in software, security, finance, customer service, marketing, compliance, or operations may transfer when it matches the responsibilities. Years alone do not show whether someone has handled comparable scope, so use the vacancy’s seniority, ownership expectations, and work products to judge the fit.

How to show employers evidence of your skills

Make it easy for a hiring team to understand what you did, how you did it, and what changed as a result. Choose examples that resemble the target role rather than presenting a generic claim of being passionate about crypto.

  • Engineering: Link to a repository or describe a shipped feature, audit or security contribution, data project, or production system. State your individual contribution and the problem it addressed.
  • Product: Show a product decision, discovery work, launch, or improvement and explain the user need or outcome behind it.
  • Compliance, finance, or operations: Give an example of a control, analysis, process, or operational change you handled and its practical effect.
  • Marketing, support, or customer-facing work: Share relevant campaign, content, customer, or community work, with enough context to make your responsibilities clear.

Bitvocation’s survey of fewer than 20 Bitcoin employers reported themes of contribution and proof of work, communication, ownership, and effective collaboration in small, fast-moving teams. The report describes these findings as anecdotal, not statistically representative. Treat them as useful prompts for explaining your work—not as a measured ranking of hiring criteria.

How to compare crypto vacancies and choose what to learn

Before investing time in a new skill, compare the actual jobs you might apply for. A vacancy’s role family and responsibilities are more informative than the broad label “crypto.”

  1. Identify the role family. Decide whether the work is engineering, security, compliance/legal, product, operations, finance, marketing, support, or another function.
  2. Check the work product and stack. Note what the job builds, secures, analyzes, operates, or sells, and which tools or languages it names.
  3. Match your evidence to its seniority. Compare stated experience, ownership, and scope with examples of work you can explain. Years in different specialties are not automatically interchangeable.
  4. Understand the employer’s ecosystem. A Bitcoin-focused organization, exchange, stablecoin or payments business, infrastructure firm, and DeFi project may have different products and needs.
  5. Verify location eligibility. Bitvocation reported 809 of its 1,801 Bitcoin listings (45%) as remote in 2025, but it also noted geographic constraints. “Remote” does not mean a job is open to applicants in every country.
